Work Visa for USA
« on: September 02, 2009, 12:58:11 PM »
Can anyone give some advice on a Russian obtaining a two to three month work visa for the USA.  I know someone who wants to come to the USA next summer. She will either visit her aunt in New York on a tourist visa, come on an exchange student program or obtain a work visa.

She is leaning towards the work visa as her number one choice (doesn't really like/know her aunt) but wants some info on all her options.

She has been abroad many times and always returned.

I told her I would pose the question here as this is where "the rubber hits the road" so to speak.

Thanks in advance. I'll probably try to get her to register and check the results herself. New member Yay!!!

How is her English skills and what education degrees including areas of study does she have?

I have some friends who recently got 2 year jobs in Vancouver as nannies.  Not sure about USA and nanny.

Hey Kiev, thanks for taking the time to respond. Her english skill are what I would very good but not fluent. She is in a language school for business terps. She is learning English, Spanish and Turkish. She is looking for a summer job. I have told her that it'll be very difficult to find an employer who can certify that they can't find a temporary employee for the summer. She is looking into an agency and that may be the only way she'll get over here on a work visa. I'm trying to steer her towards a tourist visa.

There are many, many tourist areas in the U.S. that hire girls/young women for the entire Summer. I do not know the details of how they get these jobs but I do know they go through some agencies in FSU.

Usually housing is arranged. But there is a fee from the agencies that must be paid when you return. Most of the girls [ and some young men ] I have met work very hard but really enjoy it.

This Summer the two girls I knew were from Moldova and I don't think they were going to return. I did not like this but when they explained the conditions there I could better understand.

Jolly,

Search "work travel program".

Thousands of students from the FSU come every summer.  The next application deadline is in Feb. for summer 2010.

Keep in mind these jobs often stink.  IN your area Disneyland and Knots Berry Farm and other tourist attractions are most likely to prime recipients of work travel cheap labor.  Perhaps some hotels in town also.  Additionally, it is possible for YOU to find an employer willing to take her and a simple filing from that employer would let them hire her within the confines of the program.

Jolly,

I just now noticed this thread - and want to offer a solid lead...

http://www.interexchange.org/

This organization is top notch - although I still recommend that all job offers be checked out
regarding the hiring company's reputation. We had a young Dasha stay with us in the summer
of 2007 - she and her father made all arrangements while we sat back and simply waited for her
to arrive. Dasha then followed up with a summer of work/travel in southern California in 2008.

Successful candidates are authorized to apply for Social Security numbers upon arrival, and by
Federal rules, can work even before the card arrives by mail.
