I disagree in principal. I think the advice is correct. If in doubt, leave it out.

I am with you on this one. If you remember a nice Scottish gentleman who had no luck for few years. Then one day he contacted one Ukrainian lady and he was in such a real euphoria that he went to visit her in 5 days after his initial contact. He was completely happy that he found his right woman. He appeared one year later to say that they were having a fantastic family and got a new baby.

Once you are in love, you understand it at once. I don't believe in 6 months developing.
It's your problem if you take my posts too seriously.

Yes I agree!  Further to that after going over my emails from this lady. When she talked about coming to Canada, she claimed she went to a travel agency to check about prices for coming here. She said they would set her up with a visa and passport for 500.00 She did mention shed need help with the air fare which is fine but. For a Canadian travel visa youd have to go to the Canadian embassy in Moscow. For a passport iam sure youd have to go thru the Russian government. So iam thinking scam! What you fellas think?

Scam is right. Canada is extremely cautious about granting visas to anybody, especially Russian and Chinese women.

Red flag: Visas to Canada cannot be bought using an agency service.
They must be applied for and the decision is made by a specially trained visa officer.

Just stop and think to yourself a minute what would happen if in fact any Russian woman could walk into a travel agency and buy a visa to Canada.

Won't talk to you the phone? She probably has the voice of a "he." Now why would that be? :)

This was from page 1.

She did mention shed need help with the air fare which is fine but.

...and I am willing to bet that would roughly be around 800 USD. Why can't you boys just tell rockford this over-used scamming line in the first place, chrissakes.

Did you read the advice given to Rockford75 BEFORE 6:57 pm yesterday.

What appeared somewhat innocent in the first post is now revealing itself as a likely travel scam.

Did she suggest that she travel to Canada?  From what i understand from our Canadian members of RWD, it is difficult to obtain a visa.

Chrissakes, it sure does help to read the thread.

I actually did Gator, which is why I pointed out AFTER rockford posted this scammer mentioning needing a little help for airfare NO ONE even mentioned that this was in fact a known and overly used scam line.

RW, I'm not sure if you were following Canadian news this past summer but two much smaller countries than Russia (Mexico and Czech Rupublic) had their 'visa-exempt' status rescinded by Canada.

In the past few years the number of refugee claims by these two countries sky-rocketed way out of proportion compared to other countries.

Of course Mexico and the Czech Republic were not too happy about this.
The Czech Republic went so far as to try to get the E.U. to slap visa restrictions on Canadians visiting Europe in retaliation!

Perhaps substitute *serious* for *some* may have been a better way to put it. I disagree in principal. I think the advice is correct. If in doubt, leave it out.

you know - it is quite normal for people to be self-centered, to find own qualities amusing and respectable, while critiquing the people around. It helps to keep the boundaries of self-identity well-defined, it gives the feeling of stability and some control over the course of life.

Pedants are proud of their pedantism, gamblers are proud of their ability to take risks, risk-averse people are proud of their "seriousness" and call everyone else unserious. Stubborn people are proud of their persistence, weak people are proud of their gentleness and criticize aggressive go-getters. Aggressive go-getters make fun of "meek losers". Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has a full right to transform reality around him/herself, and to wear the glasses of whatever color lens suits them best.

Rockford - if you were a woman - will you invite to live in your house a man whom you do not trust enough to talk on phone to? If you were parents of this woman - will you let the foreign stranger stay in your house, before even talking on phone to this guy?

I am not sure I understood your message correctly.
Do you want to say that Czech people do not need visas to visit Canada or they also do not need a working permit (working visa)? You have to admit it's quite a difference. Why are you speaking about only Czech Republic but not about other EU contries? As far as I know they have similar rules applayed. Polish immigrants are everywhere.

As for your line "Just stop and think to yourself a minute what would happen if in fact any Russian woman could walk into a travel agency and buy a visa to Canada". Any person living in St. Petersburg can go to the Finnish Consulate and get a multiplay tourist Schengen visa for a lenth of one year. Still having this possibility people do not emigrate to Europe because it doesn't allow them to work there. So I am very sceptic about your sentence, nothing horrible would happen if women could get Canadian tourist visa easily.
It's your problem if you take my posts too seriously.

For a Canadian travel visa youd have to go to the Canadian embassy in Moscow.

No longer true. Now, the Canadian Consulate in Moscow accepts applications sent to it using the Pony Express service. All the paperwork is sent to Moscow without the person needing to to Moscow. The last time a friend traveled to Canada on business, she got her visa without having to go to Moscow. If you don't believe me, feel free to consult the Pony Express site: http://www.ponyexpress.ru/services_visa-en.php. They have links to the Canadian Consulate in Moscow. You are only called to the Consulate if an interview is deemed necessary and they will notify you as to the date and time of the appointment that has been set.

Rock, it's disappointing that you chose to follow the foolish advice that was given to pretend you were coming to Russia soon.  There are now three possibilities:

1. She smelled your bluff and called you (Russians a very good poker players, btw)
2. She is sincere and you have now demonstrated your ability to lie to her..not a good way to start out.
3. Her plan B was always to get you to come to see her, get you to propose her and use you as a mule or at least get you to go on a shopping spree with her. (Plan A being to get you to send money for passport, visa a plane ticket).

Ill go with option 2) Ronnie that she is sincere and wants to meet me and see what iam all about. She said that all along. Instead of listening to her I think scam. That doesnt mean iam gonna let my guard down just means. I gotta see how the hand plays out. You dont write some one for 6 months just for kicks! If she wanted money or whatever she woulda asked a long time ago. That was never the case!I really think she is sincere.

I agree with the posters who say get on the plane. Be a man, grow a set and take a trip you will never forget. After six months of letters you are long overdue for a meeting. I am surprised she hung around this long. If it is a scam, and that is still a real possibility, you will know when you get there or before. Plan the trip, get a good backup plan and get ready for an eye opening experience.

You might be a good judge of character, but you dont know her character, because you really dont know her, because you have never met her.  That should be simple enough.  She is virtual and nothing more than a penpal.
Is she still planning on paying her own way?

Just read that you have never talked to her on the phone yet, in six months.
Dude forget it,  its a scam

Rock, it's disappointing that you chose to follow the foolish advice that was given to pretend you were coming to Russia soon.  There are now three possibilities:

1. She smelled your bluff and called you (Russians a very good poker players, btw) - she is the scammer

2. She is sincere and you have now demonstrated your ability to lie to her..not a good way to start out. - once the'll meet and he takes her to Canada - she'll get over it, don't worry. "I don't have a phone" does not sound true to me either.

3. Her plan B was always to get you to come to see her, get you to propose her and use you as a mule or at least get you to go on a shopping spree with her. (Plan A being to get you to send money for passport, visa a plane ticket).

and what were the possibilities before? like they were any different... Really Ronnie ))))
foolish advice? Let's not get personal between the two of us :P

Rockford, i'm usually more on a trusting side of the local crowd, but in your case - I still think there should be some possibility for you to talk with her on phone prior making a trip to Russia. Otherwise - the whole situation is just odd.

You say she does not live in Moscow - then, where does she live?
Are you going to visit her city/town/village? I suppose you are - since she offered you to stay at her parent's house, right?

But trip to Russia - with or without date with girl - is always fun, you'll love it :) Just do good planning.

I knew it was a scam as soon as he said she wanted to come to him to Canada and she needed help with funds for the visa and airfare.
That + she has no phone.
The old classic scam.
Nowadays agencies (especially in Ukraine) are turning to pro dating scamming which is much more difficult (and expensive) to figure out.

Dude, just go to Russia or Ukraine and plan on having a nice vacation sight-seeing because there are many very beautiful cities there.
Before you go, try to meet some people thru Odnoklasski or Skype in the city (or cities) you plan to go to and if something clicks, just try to meet with them individually when you arrive .The rest will take care of itself. It will be fun!  :)
