Traditional Russian Divination
« on: January 06, 2010, 02:55:48 AM »
My wife just told me about these bizarre practices http://www.blogvasion.com/2007/12/russian-traditional-divination-during.html and I was curious how common these are among the wives and girlfriends of people here and how they reconcile it with their (un)beliefs ...

FWIW, my wife isn't a believer although some of her friends are apparently.

My mom does it, along with horoscope, divination on cards, and reading books "interpreting" what dreams mean, and going to old babushkas (fortune-tellers?) for divinations, and all that other stuff, i think its plain silly. She also believes in god, but doesnt belong to any religions as far as i know. One time she went to this old woman, who told her that i would be a teacher and die at 76, that is so stupid. If you wanna listen to that crap, at least dont try to unload it on ur kids  :rolleyes2:

But maybe that'll get you out of the house; start teaching Russian to little Belgian kids. ;)

I asked my wife about this the other night and she told me she did it once with her friends. While it was in fact fairly popular, she said she basically took it within context and didn't really subscribed to it.

However, her and her friend's object of pre-occupation now is this thing called 'The Secret'.

LOL. It's always one thing or another with these guys.

I am a bit more of a yin/yang type of philosopher.

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

I understand that much of it is ritual and appears frivolous.  But the meaning to the person that experiences it is greater than can be expressed by words.  It is a personal thing.  We all have a spiritual side even if we do not want to admit it.  And I do not mean religion, I mean a personal idea of life, and how we all are part of the same reality as hard as that might be to accept.  And how we see it all interrelate.

I am more drawn to the I Ching.... Personal preference.

Yarrow at first... then after reading it all many times, I use the coins.  It is the images it brings to the heart and mind that matter... in regards to the question.  Okay, coins is easier.  But it is all in the images it brings to the mind.  Not in the method.  I do not do it every day, or even at points of crisis.  I do it to return to my soul.

Damn, that sounds cheesy... But it is the most honest reply I can give.

I am self described as a "Sufi/Taoist/That has studied the rituals of the Golden Dawn."

I was raised to be a minister in a cult religion.  I think my way now is better for me.  And less annoying for those around me.    ;)

I read things that are true to my purpose and reason, and many things that might say that I am crazy.  I try to see all sides.  If the coins choose the verse or the sticks, it makes no difference to me.  I can learn from it in my present situation.  Crazy is up to all of you.   ;D

I do not seek answers, I seek inspiration.  And that is a personal thing.  We each find it in our own ways.  And this is just one source for me.  It connects me with an inner self.  As does meditation, yoga, and various things for other people.
