Next month would be a perfect time to visit Ukraine.
« on: June 20, 2010, 05:40:58 AM »
Lots of fresh fruits and veggies. The pubs will be filled with World Cup fans. The skirts will be short and the high heels will be high. The outdoor cafes will be jammed packed with people drinking and enjoying the great weather. I probably wont be in Ukraine for the Euro Cup 2012 but it would be really fun during this World Cup.

Obviously you've never witnessed Obriens packed out at 9AM full of expats watching soccer or you would understand. I understand Ukraine is not in the World Cup. What exactly is the point of your post?

First match : June 11
Last match : July 11

If you go next month I doubt you will see a lot of expats watching Soccer the 20th of July.  Especially since both the USA and England do not have a lot of chances to be in that last matches... :P

Ok so lets just say the first week and a half would be nice. As far as the USA being in the last matches well we'll just have to see what happens. I can always enjoy watching The Dutch get their collective asses handed to them. Shadow, you seem a little uptight toward me. Are you still pissed about what I said about the cover up of your government regarding the Van Der Sloot kid. Don't worry about that anymore. You dont have to concern yourself with that little prick for a long time. Hopefully he'll get his sooner rather that later. I'd say the USA has a better chance of going on to the next round than that boy.

No idea who is uptight here... but if you say "next month" about an event already started it seems your calendar is off.
As for your remarks, I have not got the faintest idea what you are talking about.
Guess you were the guy who called the US government when Russia invaded the country of Saakashvili.  :P

Well, I wouldn't get too hung up about the soccer thing. It is a good time to visit the FSU and I am pretty sure any re blooded AM going to Ukraine from this board WON'T be looking at those soccer fans anyway (of course I could be mistaken).

Let me axe you this Shadow. Will they still be playing the World Cup next month? I was merely stating that next month would be an exciting time to be in Ukraine for the reasons that I listed. Are you ok with my other reasons or will they suffice? Since when do we need to start taking oaths to post around here? You're right Glyden, most people wont be looking for soccer fans but it's good to have someone to talk to that speaks your language from time to time while having a beer and unless someone has experienced it first hand it's fun to watch because it's like the SuperBowl on crystal meth.

Yes, OBrien's, a fun place to take a break from too long of an immersion in  Ukrainian culture.

Years ago I was in Kiev during The Open (British Open as in golf).  Tiger Woods was making a run for the Grand Slam (winning four major tournaments).  And I earlier read on the Internet that he was near the lead, in a position to win.  It was Sunday, the last day of the tournament, and I told my UW date that I wanted to watch the tournament.

We enter OBrien's and walk upstairs.  There are maybe 8 televisions.  Four tuned to Formula I racing and four to bicycle races.  We are not in Kansas any more!

After much convincing the management searched the channel lineup and found the golf tournament.  The broadcast was in German language, so I had no idea what was happening.  Eventually, the coverage shows a leaderboard.  The name of Tiger Woods is not listed among the leaders.

I say to myself, "Where is Tiger Woods?"  Out of frustration I say it loud and again even louder.  People look at me with bewildered expressions.  I repeat my question clearly.  No answer.  No one cares.

Dejected, I sit down knowing that I will not know what happened until I get on the Internet.  My date then asks me, "Who is this Tiger Woods?"

LOL, well I think Greg has a good point, which I was trying to support (just down playing the sports thing for the nit pickers). Summer is a good time to visit Ukraine! Plenty of people out enjoying the warm weather. I have never been to O'Briens Pub, but I do enjoy finding locals who can speak English! I met an English man on his way to Feadosia (sp?) with his wife, as we were walking in one of the parks.

Next month as in 30 days from now, no.
As for that its fun to be in Ukraine and to be around some people watching sports events (at whatever time) sure. And I am sure that in Ukraine you will be able to find some soccer fans that men would love to play a game with.... ;D

July is a good time to visit Ukraine.  But towards the end of July people tend to go on vacations so best to visit early part of July unless you already have a GF.

Never been to O'Brien's but used to work sometimes less than a minute away at KPMG and than Ernst Young when they moved away from metro with McDonald's.  I tried to stay away from ex pat watering holes when living in Kiev.  But sounds like a good place.

I've walked by KPMG a thousand times it seems going up that hill. Kievstar, did you ever run into my friend Glen Willard from The Willard Group? Nice guy. I've known him for years. We met while watching the SuperBowl in Obriens at about 3AM that morning. Are you still in Kiev? I'm sure I could drop a few names I've met over the years and you would know one or two. It's a small world. The center of Kiev has changed too much for me. Too much graffiti and too many outdoor kiosks and cafes in the center. It's too commercialized. The outside of Globus is a dump these days.

Hi Greg,  do not know Glen Willard.  I live USA now but currently in Africa for a week.  Wife does not like Ukraine.  Hope she changes her mind someday as I would live there permanently.  Used to live in Podol area right on the river.

I used to use delphania all the time for dates which is near O'Brien.  Sometimes use Kiev Connections as well which is a little further but still close.  Was very convenient  to work at KPMG and than meet a girl for lunch than back to work than another girl for dinner.  Repeat until I found one I liked and than dated.  Met many women through my work as well.  Funny thing is I met more than a hundred women in Kiev on dates and only 2-3 girls a long ways from Kiev.  Married one of the ones a long ways from Kiev.  Once I went East Ukraine never went back.

GregfromGa - Kharkov is full of beauties as usual ! as for the Footy, Coke Cola have put up a huge TV screen in Sumskija Str, near to Freedom Square, so everyone can watch all the games from South Africa for free - the atmosphere there is great. During the day there are  competitions for the kids and its packed at night.
There is no trouble with drunken slobs and the place is safe and clean. I think that Kharkov are practicing ready for Euro 2012 , as Kharkov is one of the Host cities. They have finished the new football stadium and I was at the local airport the other day and I was surprised how big the new extension is. All we need is for someone like Wizz Air to fly direct and so cut out the Kiev transfer - here's hoping !!

There bringing in daily service from Dubai and moscow to Kharkov airport soon.  Also Cairo to Kharkov as well in talks.  England will be hard since Kharkov is more industrial than financial.  Unless enough Brits start looking for wife's do not see a daily England to Kharkov flight.

They do have the vienaa flight now.

Hi Kievstar,
Thats good news - yes I know about Vienna, many guys that come here use Vienna as a link to Kharkov already, it saves travelling down from Kiev.
I used to regually fly with BMI from Kiev to Heathrow , but they stopped when Wizz opened up early this year. I have flown with Wizz once so far this year and its just the same price as BMI was - thats by the time you have paid for extra leg room , luggage, food, booking fees etc etc !! The flight with Wizz was ok, but not the standard of BMI or BA.
I flew from Kiev to Egypt earlier this year, that was very good. I see Air Malta now fly from Kiev every week.
There will be alot more airline companies using Kharkov's new terminal over the next 12 months I'm sure.
