What's happening here now is worse than anything I've experienced in my 35 years living in SoCal, including 04-05 which were the worst fires to happen in LA in many, many years. I looked out my window today and could barely see the apt building next to mine.

Chivo-

I hope you're doing fine out there. Coming from a Socal boy, your posts doesn't sound too encouraging considering Socal literally invented wildfires....

Last report I heard, there's roughly 500-600 fires burning all at the same time. For every 100 fires they put out, another 100 start up again someplace. They don't seem to be making any headway. Worst, the report states the heatwave (no wind to boot) will be lingering for at least the next 3-4 days. OTOH, the winds, if they do come along, may spell relief for Moscow but may actually be a bad thing in fighting the fires...you know how that goes.

Take care and I hope all the affected folks in Russia the very best as well!

Chivo- I hope you're doing fine out there.

...no mentioning of the mouse - I presume, only because everybody is informed that we mice can survive in any circumstances & conditions?  :P

The sky colour has changed from reddish to grey. Some wind - though at +38C it feels like a hairdryer blowing straight into your face...

Now I am able to see the "Izmailovo" hotel which was hidden in smog during last 3 days.

Less cars on the streets than on usual Monday (maybe due to the fact that many companies allow their employees to stay home & work online these days).

However many more ambulances on the streets that usual - I've seen 3 within just half an hour?

The nearest Sberbank office has installed the drinking water dispencer for clients' use on Friday... Great idea, but poor realisation: on Saturday they've run out of water by lunchtime. Today they have enough water, but run out of plastic cups by lunchtime.

Well, of course I wish the very best as well, Olga. I just figured you'll be perfectly fine high up on your posh penthouse..  :)

What's missing on the reports we get here are the actual conditions for the average mainstream. I am curious as to how the folks are handling their daily challenges between having to choose being inside to avoid excessive smoke & endure the heat, or be outside amidst all that smoke (I presume many residential units in Moscow are not air-conditioned)...Do you know how the general citizenry are coping with this condition?

It's a crazy time in our crazy world. Pakistan and the Mid-west floods, mudslide in China, Volcano eruption to a neighborhood near you, Al Gore going gay, etc...

I've been watching it on the Russian channels on DirectTV. That is when I can get the wife to translate. Looks to be very disruptive to much of Moscow

Well, of course I wish the very best as well, Olga. I just figured you'll be perfectly fine high up on your posh penthouse...  :)

Well GQ, actually living on the top floor in such a heat isn't funny at all. With the smog of the last few days there is no direct sunlight heating the roof over my head, but the previous 5 weeks I suffered from heat more than my neighbours on the lower floors. Also their windows are protected from direct sunlight by trees - while mine aren't  :'(

(I presume many residential units in Moscow are not air-conditioned)...

You're absolutely right. Moreover, the local stores have run out (or pretended to...) of A\C units during the first 2 weeks of heat (means second half of June). So the current options are: a) sign up and wait for you A\C to arrive from China or South Corea in October; b) pay double and get it in a week.

I am curious as to how the folks are handling their daily challenges between having to choose being inside to avoid excessive smoke & endure the heat, or be outside amidst all that smoke. Do you know how the general citizenry are coping with this condition?

I can only tell you what I see on the streets... Many more people are wearing those funny light-blue masks than in winter, when yet another flu (was that chicken or cow or pig past winter?) was at the peak of its popularity. Of course these masks, which used to cost 15 or 20 roubles in pharmacies, quickly disappered. BUT! I saw a guy selling these masks for 50 roubles at the subway station exit, and my beautician has told me she saw a girl selling these masks for 100 RUR walking between the cars that waited for the green light at the crossroads.

Also noticed wet bedclothes hanging from many open windows - obviously being used to prevent the smoke from penetrating into the apartments... I just spray water on the curtains, which will obviously need to be washed once this madness will be over - as the "moistured" smoke leaves yellow-grayish traces on white curtains...

Olga-

Don't just spray the blankets. You need to get it down and heavily wash/rinse it. Twice/day f possible. Deposits left on the blanket is worst than not having it there in the first place at all. Pollutants can expotentially magnify if not properly washed out. You need to do this at least once a day.

I do hope this gets all behind you folks. My wife's relatives in Voronezh is in a pretty tough situation as well.

We have been having an unseasonally 'cool'  weather in LA because the jetstreams were abnormally push further south, but this week they report it's urging back farther north and looks like we're heading to our seasonally 37c + (100 F +) weather pattern. Hopefully this would ultimately have an affect unto your region and cool things down a bit and get those fires out.

Olga, do you know what started all these fires?

FP-

We actually had RussianTV before but missus asked me to get it taken out since she hardly ever watches it. Now I kinda wish I didn't.

Other than watching movies, my wife isn't a big fan of the TV. We recently bought a new house and with it the opportunity to change from cable to DirectTV and the Russian channels. I thought it'd help for her to keep up daily to see some of the TV she had at home. I think I enjoy it more than her. Of course much of this might be because she has to listen to my nagging and translate it for me  :)

I have found that I can "half" follow a movie or other program without translation but with the news it is next to impossible. My wife finds some of the programming nostalgic but uninteresting. She rarely watches while I enjoy it. Keeping it or not is her decision.

Long Off Topic here, sorry, but...

Yeah, for the most part, I'm like you....Right now we're running full FiOS and I had to fully dedicate a separate PC in our media center for the biz. This gives me the net feed on a switch and wifey can actually get Russian broadcasts through the net and knocks out all the usual net ads and zoom to just the vidfeed. When she talks to her parents, they literally occupy the entire room. The pic on pic even graphically shows us who's on the phone when someone calls.

The FiOS are able to handle all of our ports including the cameras and communications from across the Pacific when we need to have our vid conferences. The only lag right now is our screen. It's plasma 60 hz. so it's a bit slow on the vid conferences. Plasma and LCDs are starting to be a thing of the past. I'm dumping it and getting 120 hz LED/3D. I pre-wired our entire house and the media room is fully intergrated with our techie needs including all the gamers and movies. So anyone who wants to duel on Modern Warfare, zap me up and we'll duel...

Good to hear you opted for DTV. Don't touch cable as it's 90s tech. The only prob I have with DTV is they don't really have a net domain as of yet so they have to lease their feed from other carriers. Otherwise they're pretty fast on their sat. feed.

Wifey hardly ever surf the Ruskie channels however as it is. She have her own guilty pleasure shows she follows when time allows, and all of them are US-based programs. I don't watch much TV myself, although I would occasionally watch NGC, Discovery, Animal Planet and the likes..Golf channel, not so much anymore since they fired Win McMurry. Hopefully Lauren Thompson will make up for that, but that'll take a while. She's a cutie though...

Thanks GQ for the shout out.

Well it isn't that encouraging out here. Brutal is more like it. Doing OK, but feel semi-imprisoned by the air pollution. Fortunately I have A/C which helps quite a bit. Most of my friends and colleagues aren't so lucky and you can see the exhaustion on their faces as well as the faces of people in the street. Normally July/August is a "happy" time in Moscow, but not this year that's for sure.

The good news for me anyway, is that I'm scheduled to be in LA next week and judging by what you've said, just in time for another heat wave 8).

Let's hope I don't bring the "fire" with me.

That's good, Chivo. Do stay low until things normalize again, hopefully sooner than later.

Be prepared when you get back to LA. Despite the recession, there isn't a freeway here that isn't being worked on so traffic will definitely be worst than you last remembered.

You will literally be jumping out of a fire into a frying pan in more ways than one.  ;D

Last week Elvira and I would take evening walks through town to enjoy some relief from the
day's heat, which averaged +38/40 C.  Smoke hung over the river and city center like a veil
of fog. Some nights it resembled the photo above that Sculpto posted - where beacons and
lighted church spires were indiscernable from a distance, and the faint smell of a fireplace
filled the air. As of yesterday, the situation there remains the same.

After boarding my train to depart Zelyenedolsk last Wednesday, I observed many spot fires
off to the south, and occasional small groups of firefighters dowsing and digging. Too bad I
had left the camera with Elvira.

Here's contrast for you. The 1st photo was taken 22 July at high noon. The second was
exactly a week later at the same time, although looking in the other direction. It was +40 C
with an overcast of fresh smoke from the newest blazes both west and south.

The smoke combined with the heat is causing a lot of deaths. On the news last night it was reported that Moscow averages over 300 deaths a day.  Since the start of the fires that figure is now over 700 deaths a day.

Estimated 500 fires from photo taken from space.

This is just nuts! To think Poland, Czech, and Germany were/are almost underwater with their flooding problems and Russia is dealing with drought and these wildfires...

Unbelievable!

Radioactive material nothing new for Kiev region after the President dredged the river this winter it got into the water supply.  The new construction areas north of city past couple years also caused issues.  There is a reason the real wealthy live south of the city.

That's great graphic, 55. China was in a midst of drought as well when they got a torrential downpour that caused that mudslide. Much of the present events are being tagged as record-breaking or even 'unprecedented'.

I took a peek at the 24-hour seismic report yesterday in the RoF region for magnitude >2.5 and you can follow a relative pattern of movement making future earthquake/s almost predictable. San Andreas is definitely waaaay overdue and a lot of energy is being released (relatively) current around this massive fault - this will undoubtedly collapse in the very near future that scientists believe should be in the +/- 8 RS or worst. Which will or may, in turn, poise Yellowstone to near eruption state.

The oceanic thermal patterns are a bit out of relative pattern as well, and are directly contributing to the present weather pattern being experienced both in the upper and lower latitudes.

While all of these is a buffet of information for the scientific community, it is sure giving  yeomen such as myself a cause to pause but much greater grief/suffering for those in the midst of these current events.

add: It's truly remarkable that since we are now have the ability to record and study these natural events, it's mind-boggling to witness the relative speed at whch these things happen and progress. It's amazing to witness them unfold.

That's good news Olga. I hope all of these to be over soon for all the Russians affected by this event.

Getty Images captured a lot photographs during these tumultous time in Russia. I thought to share two of the extremes. I particularly liked the second one taken in Moscow.  :)

It's a medical mask.  I saw somewhere, possibly on Russia Today, that medical masks are no use at all.

Don't just spray the blankets. You need to get it down and heavily wash/rinse it. Twice/day if possible.

GQ, as I wrote above (but you didn't notice) I sprayed water on the curtains, not blankets...

Well... here's the colour of "first" water that it got after submerging in it 1 curtain, that has been used for 1 week.

If to you guys that doesn't tell anything, ask your wifes who actually do wash curtains in your homes  :rolleyes2:

Bleah.  I can't imagine what that smoke is doing to your clothing, walls, linens, carpeting and furniture.  I'd be tempted to put my clothing in sealed plastic bags, and cover my furniture with plastic.

Yeah, that's my bad, Olga.

If interested, here's JPL's (NASA AIRS) time lapse video of the spreading wildfires as viewed from the north pole. It shows the CO2 flight around the globe. It's pretty intense.

That's pretty bad.  :-[

There were activities here in California over the weekend to ship out some fire fighting equipment to help with the wildfires out there. I just dont know to what extent. Our temps this week are normalizing and are hitting in the 100s on the inland areas again. Summer is finally here.

My wife told me that the word in Russia last weekend is that our prez proudly announced that he was donating $35K for the fire victims  :rolleyes2: At the least, I hope he isn't wiring it through Western Union.

All he had to do is suspend his personal Wednesday night shindigs for a month and he'll be able to inject far more aid than that. Especially considering the monies it got from Russia for the recent oil spill in the gulf.
