A guy walks into a bar...
« on: August 12, 2010, 10:39:33 PM »
It's Saturday night in Odessa or Kiev and I'm going out to a club, bar, disco, the library...whatever.

What, if anything different am i going to notice between a Saturday night in the Ukraine versus one in the US?

In a club or disco probably much more women as you are used to.
Outside more drunk people.

No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Definitely more drunk people on the street.  People literally drinking in the parks and walking down the streets drinking beer at night.  Few if any sports bars.  If they exist there won't be wall to wall TVs broadcasting the local, national or international sports.  Police walking a beat instead of riding in a patrol car.

Bullsch!t.

Fatness is subjective
This girl was kicked off the tv show for being too fat
Poor girl now started worrying about her weight.

I think Shadow meant a higher ratio of women to men. I've seen just as many drunks outside clubs in the US as in the FSU.

I have yet to see a drunk coming out of or hanging around a library :P.

Not sure about Kiev or Odessa, but in Moscow there are sport bars that show every sport imaginable at all times throughout the day wall to wall (even WWF), but I don't think it matters in your case.

You can be fairly sure no one has a gun (on them or in their car) and there are more fights in US clubs/bars.

The women IMO are more approachable and if you find one that speaks English, do not be shy. You might be pleasantly surprised, but do be respectful.

You will typically find more feis control.

You'll have a hard time distinguishing the prostitutes from the regular girls at some clubs just by looking at them ;D

Fatness is subjective

Only to a very limited degree.  We can all look at two people of vastly different weight for the same height and readily tell which is fat and which is slender.

But, there are different standards of weight for some specialty professions such as modeling.  So there, one could be considered overweight (I don't think the term fat would be used) for the job, when in fact they were average to even slender in build.

Whether this is the correct way to hire models is a completely different question.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

Yeah, but Heidi is 37 years old.  Almost ancient, by FSU woman's standards...   :o

By FSU woman's standards, or by the standards of segments of men seeking FSUW?

This policy of not admitting fat women or for that matter fat men (unless they're rich and sharing) is nothing new.  Go into any high end club in London, Paris, New York etc. and look around, do you think it's just coincidence that all the people you see in the club are thin and beautiful?

Why would any club admit a fat woman or a fat man?  There is simply no incentive, these clubs want to be viewed as the place to be, the place where the action and romance happens.  Who wants to romance a fat man or woman?

My point was a little tongue in cheek response to facetrock's assertion.  It was not intended as a political statement.

Romance doesn't happen in bars/clubs.  Clubs want beautiful people so that members of the opposite sex will come to the club and spend money.  They don't really care about romance.  Other than the fact this now goes both ways, I don't think this is anything new or earth shattering.

That would highly depend in everyone's experiences and locale.

But in general, if you're from a US metropolis, chances are you'll notice the absence of a multi-ethnic crowd. Beyond that, it's pretty much the same...

HAHA.  Since when is mutual groping or a meeting of loins defined as "romance"?

Do I need to start quoting Lord Byron?

Key word romance.   ;D

Lust and fun are a separate subject.

Lord Byron Scott: "Come give me some love, babe!"  :D

Now how much more romantic does anyone want to get?

Depends on her... and him (to some extent).

But as my favorite Russian woman taught me... "Look under the table".

She says that when I am being reminded to look for my sense of humor.  And GQ, you always help me find it.  Thanks.  I appreciate your serious posts too.  But the humor always reminds me that (even if it hurts you to hear it from Sphinxy), you are one of the cool guys.

Boethius come on already. People go to bars or clubs to meet other people. My brother met his wife at a bar and they have been married for 28 years. I know lots of people who are married that met at bars. There a social gathering point for single people. Nothing wrong with meeting someone there and in some places its really the only way. Men and women have been finding their mates for decades at bars and clubs.
But for some reason in todays age its fashionable to say you only go there for fun. Almost every single person that goes to clubs hopes that lighting will strike that night.

Bars generally don't discriminate on who they do/don't let in.

I don't know one couple who met in a bar.

We know many FSUW/WM couples who will admit that as their new marriages began they denied
having met on the Internet - - usually it's glossed over with "We met in Moscow (or Kyiv...)

I know many married couples who met at clubs, far more than at weddings or church bake sales...

I don't think it's bad to meet in a bar, I just don't know anyone who has.

I know 3 couples who met online, all in forums, not on dating sites.   Most of the other couples I know met at school or at work.
