Actually, I thought it was pretty good, considering the temp that night  was about -15C.  My hand would have been shaking like a leaf in a  whirlwind.  No wonder the boy was taking on board a little liquid  warmth.

Thanks for the compliments guys, the boy is also a top notch computer  programmer and will soon gaduate with the Red Diploma, Summa Cum Laude,  from Moscow State University, MSEE.  I'm real proud of him.

He's so smart I can't talk to him, but I'm still proud.

It's too cold for shaking. I'm here now and when I head outside I'm frozen solid. I imagine your stepson was like a human tripod.

I've been shooting outdoor vistas and cityscapes all my life, and would often go through many ROLLS of film, hoping to get one shot this good. And rarely in freezing temperatures.

LOL - I know that feeling, jb. My niece, who graduated with honors from the Wharton School of Business at U Penn, practically runs a NYC corporation at 27. Her business savvy is humbling to an aging guy like me...

I consider that high praise, thanks, I'll pass that on to his mom.

One of the first things I noticed, and appreciated, was the clouds. Like you would see in an old masters painting.

Wonderful photo JB !  Did your step son use a tripod?  If not he must have been practically ossified by the cold...

If he has the talent to make pictures like this to order then a lucrative side line could be professional photography.  Really JB - this is magazine quality work.

Thanks Leslie, and others, I'll pass on the compliments.

I don't know if he used a tripod or not, I do know he has one,,, I bought it for him.

He came home only briefly last year, most of the time was spent in school, and then for summer, he did a 3 month internship at the U.S. National Labratory at Los Alamos, NM.  After he finished that and was headed back to school I asked what he was going to do with the money he'd earned,,, silly question.  He had spent his free time researching digital cameras on line,,,  (he had borrowed my laptop for the summer).  At first, I had recommended the Canon, based on pictures Jack had posted, but after extensive shopping, he settled on the new Nikon D70S.  We went down to the camera store together to buy it, the kid was almost in tears when he layed down the $1,400.00 for the camera, the upgrade lens and extra memory he'd selected, yet I've never seen someone so excited with a new toy.

The tripod was on me.

The results are what you see, the picture quality may be 90% Nikon, but there's at least 10% of the kid in it.

I don't know why I continue to call him a kid, he's 20 y.o. now, but he was just a little guy when I met his mom so many years ago.  I guess in my mind's eye whenever he's not here, I still see the kid.

Two quick additional comments jb.

First, you are wrong about the photo being 90% Nikon. The one thing which cannot be purchased - and which separates very good photographers from GREAT photographers is - the great ones have an eye for composition. They see things in the world around them which others miss - and they photograph it.

The photo your son took demonstrates he has an 'eye'. Maybe it was a fluke - and maybe not. But in this photo, at least, he shows remarkable talent.

Next comment is, you may want to take that photo down until you have a chance to watermark it - for copyright purposes.

I'll leave that up to you - as it is, the resolution would not be suitable for much more than web publication anyway, but you still should get into the habit (or he should) of watermarking any photo you release into the open.

FWIW

- Dan

Perhaps you are right, I sent that photo to you without asking his permission to do so.  There was no thought in my head that it might have some value other it might be appreciated by the membership here.  I was simply in a sharing mode, and I shared something that truly did not belong to me.

Please go ahead and take it down for now.

Truly spectacular shot JB (I got to see it before it was pulled but didn't have time to comment). The wife loved it too :D.

Ask Dima to email me a picture, after all he got the $1400 from me!   LOL

(For those wondering, he has been my technical person, programing and writing farily complex scripts for my business webpage.    If anyone needs a GREAT programmer, Dima is the man!   And a hard worker!)
