I posted a long time ago and mentioned that my wife and step-son hated root beer.

I don't think Russian people in general like my favorite soda.

Clyde, I am addicted to soda.  Right now I have not touched any soda for close to a year.  I love root beer, but would choose Dr. Pepper, Coke or Pepsi prior to choosing root beer.  Root beer is a great soda, but just not a usual first choice for me, which is plain old coke, then sprite or 7-up.  Dr. Pepper is great, but again, not my usual first two choices, but a change of pace kind of soda.  The wife only drinks fruit juice, tea, milk or coffee.  Since I am addicted to soda I quit five years or so ago and did not touch any for about 3 1/2 years.  On a trip to Russia I decided to have a diet sprite and then it was bottle after bottle (usually 2 litters a day) for a year or so.  Since then I quit again cold turkey and am now on the decaf tea band wagon (besides milk, coffee, water and an occassional juice).  I wonder how many more people are or were addicted to soda.  By the way, donuts are another addiction I quit cold turkey twenty or so years ago, never to relapse.

I get harrased every day for the amount of soda I drink. I love root beer but can't buy it here. AW makes the best. So I settle for Pepsi, sometimes Coke or Fanta for a change of pace. The Wife continualy hassles me about it but tough I ain't giving it up. I like Sasparilla as well & Swamp Water but only one place I know of in the world that sells them & I am a long ways from there, unfortunately. I do drink more tea now than ever but Soda still tops the list. And I don't move in the morning without my coffee!!!

I tried root beer when I got here and I liked it. But I'm not a big fan of soda, so I don't regularly drink it.

Rootbeer is not my first choice, (I drink Coke like most drink coffee) but for a change of pace it can be great in a well frosted mug or the best yet with a big scoop of vanilla icecream.

I do not like peppermint but prefer wintergreen.

Rootbeer has a similar taste to wintergreen.

There is a soft drink in Ukraine, looks very much like rootbeer but tastes awful.

They drink it like soda.

It is non-alcoholic and tastes like Guiness stout.

My wife, Lena, loves rootbeer, but only high quality rootbeer.  Also cream soda.  There are some small brands of high quality rootbeer and cream soda much superior to A&W.  Of course that is only refering to bottled or canned sodas.  The best rootbeer is not available in cans or bottles but is served fountain style in chilled mugs and never with ice!

My parents and grandparents used to make a summer drink that they called "kavas."  It had cucumbers and green onions in it with water and a touch of vinigar.  I guess it would be more like a cold soup for summer time.  It was delicious and refreshing.  Anyone else ever heard of such a concoction?  It seems to me that "kavas" is a term used for a homemade alcohalic brew.

I was told this weekend that Kavas was a non-alcholic drink made from fermented bread.  My fiancee found some at a Global Foods store and we bought a bottle.  Tasted like molassis and water to me...

Bruno, your a sick individual, LMAO. My wife introduced me to Kvas as she likes it & I gotta say the only thing that comes to my mind to describe it is 'buffalo piss'.

It is a foul smelling, foul tasting concotion of fermented yeasty crap. I took one sip & nearly puked. I thought beer was bad but given the choice I'd take a beer before Kvas any day of the week. YuuuccccKKKK!!!!:D:D

STE Root Beer & Saspirilla arn't even in the same league & are no where near the same drink. At least not real Saspirilla. Never know what you Brits are drinkin'. LOL:);)

I've never drank 'buffalo piss' either but it comes to mind that it must taste quite similar to Kvas!!!!:P

I found it to be a vile concoction & how anybody can drink it is beyond me. I guess its all in the tastebuds, some of us got 'em & some of us don't.:D:D

Drink is called "kvas" (it containes about ~1,5 % alcohol, though in homemade kvas it could be till 4% )

Cold soup with kvas is called "okroshka"
Nature made kvas is fine healthy and refreshing drink in summer
If you drunk that one which was made from some chemical concentrate(90% of what is sold in plastc botles are right of such kind)  then I agree with you it's nothing more than  'buffalo piss'

Those are two differnt drinks in the US.  Just as Birch Beer isnt the same as root beer.  They all have similar tastes though.  Sasperilla's a bit more creamy then root beer.  The old brand Moxie was a Sasperilla if I remember correctly.  Was popular in the 1930's

Rumor has it that 'buffalo piss' is similar in aroma and taste to 'moose piss', typically found contained in green glass bottles labeled "Canadian Ale'...  :P

Ginger beer is the key ingredient for a "Moscow Mule". My dad used to drink these in the summer and I took a liking to them as well. Quite refreshing on a hot day.

Vodka
Ginger Beer
Slice of Lime

Is hard to find anyplace that carries Ginger Beer down here. Some of the Mexican stores have it occasionally.

Dr. Brown's cream soda is still made. Are there any deli's in Italy?

BTW, my family is from Vasto, in the Abbruzzi region.

Just for KenC - My absolute all-time FAVORITE is Vernor's. In fact, they used to (maybe still do) make a Vernor's ice cream which was phenomenal.

Can't seem to find any of the drink around here any more - sadly.

Unfortunately for You Vernors Ginger Ale is only sold east of the Mississippi.  I'm glad you like it I could never stand the stuff.

Actually, that is not true any more.  I bought Vernors in San Diego last year.  (Lena loved it cold) I think I read somewhere where Vernors had been bought out by Coke or Pepsi.  There is no equal to Vernors gingerale.  Especially good heated with a stick of cinnamon during the cold months.  In the summer, mix in a scoop of vannila ice cream for what was called a "Boston cooler."  Why "Boston cooler", I never knew.  I remember driving past the main bottling plant on Woodward back in the day.  BTW, A&W is also a Michigan corporation.

KenC

(And Dan, the ice cream is VERY good too)
