Ever hear people say 'irregardless'?

I really enjoy the pictures though.
We went to Hot Springs Ark on the 6th and I put the better pictures up on Photobucket.

Rick - it seems you feel that your service to the US carries with it some entitlement here at RWD. Perhaps you could be even MORE bold and describe, with specificity, what it is you expect?!?

I'll believe it when I see evidence of it.

Oriented vs. Orientated
« Reply #78 on: June 06, 2011, 05:10:02 PM »
Could not miss this discussion :D, two participles/adjectives from the verbs Orient and Orientate.

My Webster's 7th New Collegiate Dictionary gives the verb Orient as main definition and Orientate as a link to it, implying dependence. My Concise Oxford English Dictionary groups both under a single entry, implying equivalence.

What probably happened was that orientation became the noun to express the action of orienting (giving a direction) because the natural derivative (orient) was unsuitable, having too narrow a meaning (East). Then the verb orientate (first known use: 1848) was retro-fitted from orientation ;).

Usage: oriented is generally used to express an originally existing condition/state, and orientated for an induced condition/state. Thus family-oriented would be a 'natural' trait, and family-orientated an 'acquired' trait.

Another consideration is that some people think that the longer variant of a given word sounds more learned. For example, in Italian we have both problema (problem) and problematica (set/group of problems): the latter has become inexplicably fashionable on our TV/press of late, so we no longer have single problems, but only groups of problems ::) ;D.

We continue to look at real estate in Dnepr, thinking of having a second home.   The quality of life in Dnepr is very high; I know of few cities that are as livable.

This is one piece of property we looked at.  This view if from the penthouse floor of a new property just off the block of banks.

Take a look at the two towers on the river to the right of this pic.  We will go there next; this gives perspective of where we will be going...

After the ground shots looking up, our perspective now is from the 21st floor of the first tower.

Such great views!

Prices are about half of what you would pay in the US.

But plan on paying cash-- interest rates from banks in Ukraine are about 26%.

Simoni I missed you by a couple of weeks in Dnepropetrovsk.   What a difference in weather over the same time period from 2010 to 2011. Had you made your trip to Dneprop last spring at the same time you would have seen rain almost everyday.  This year, perfect weather.

Yep, we are having perfect weather Jack.  I think we are very lucky.

I have spent half a year in this city, and my favorite rental is the one we are in at MOCT.   Great bargain at 60 bucks a night, as you mentioned.

Hi Sandro.

What's the story about people referring to themselves in the third person?

Here in the US, it typically is done by rich, low IQ athletics or people with big egos.   Such as Cam Newton, whose scores were so low he could only get into a junior college out of high school. But now he has arrived on the big stage, so he talks about "Cam Newton."  LOL

It's rare, thank goodness.

OK, let me see if I have this right Sandro.

My brother became orientated to an Oriental when he married his Chinese wife in the Orient and is now family-oriented with his three young children.

Taxi fares in River City
« Reply #86 on: June 06, 2011, 06:12:21 PM »
Yesterday we had to move back and forth between MIL and visitors to MOCT and to see real estate, leaving no time for the mile and half walks.

So we took taxies.

But guess what?  The price suddenly jumped from the minimum charge of 30 grivna to 50 grivna!  My wife refused to pay it, so we went taxi to taxi until we hit the 30 grivna taxi.

Seems like some drivers want to haul people; others just want to smoke and talk to their buddies.

Simoni,

Putting aside the "one in green on the right" - I hope you took it upon yourself to educate these young women (were any of them "teenagers" - Heaven Forbid!) as to the dangers and risks of cellphone usage.  ;D

Hi Sandro. What's the story about people referring to themselves in the third person? Here in the US, it typically is done by rich, low IQ athletics or people with big egos.
Not only in the US, one of the early starters of this supposedly objective narrative style was:

Gaius Julius Caesar

who wrote his famous war diaries (Commentarii de Bello Gallico and Commentarii de Bello Civili) in the 3rd person. In our midst, Shosty is another member prone to go into 3rd directly from a standing start ;D.

Correct, unless your brother was:

1. Always oriented to the Orient, or
2. Orientated into marriage at gun bamboo-stick point.

Many of the girls in Dnerp are SMOKING HOT!

But unfortunately, many are smoking.

Phillip Morris is losing in the US, but winning big in Ukraine.

One out of every three people in Ukraine smoke, as compared to less than 20% in the US.  But i swear--it looked to me like more than 50% were blowing smoke.   It's hard eat in restaurants because of the haze.

Ah, good news. As a smoker it will be a pleasant change, when I go to Ukraine, not to be viewed as an outcast of society just because I like to smoke. Only thing is, will I feel comfortable smoking indoors after years of anti-smoking conditioning by the anti-smoking nazis? Time will tell  :)

Oh no.  It finally happened.  This thread is dead.  The dreaded Nazis example occurred again.

Natural--you will be fine.  We had to leave one restaurant because there was not fresh air anywhere to be had.

Do you really like stale stinky air?   Look--you don't know what you are getting into.  When just a few smoke, the air is marginal.  You too will not like a state of no good air to breathe. :-)

But the good news is that it might break you from this nasty habit, and extend your life 10 years! :-)  Hope so!

My friend, I know perfectly well. Up until not that many years ago we could smoke in bars and restaurants here in the west. Hey,I even remember back in the 80's when we could smoke in planes, on our way to sunny Spain.

It's just nice to be able to go to a bar or restaurant and have a coffeee or a drink and be able to smoke also, if the weather outside is bad. Even better is of course sitting outside on a sunny and warm day doing the same.

We continue to look at real estate in Dnepr, thinking of having a second home.   The quality of life in Dnepr is very high; I know of few cities that are as livable.

When I went on Jack's tour it was my first time for some of the cities including Zap and Dneper.   In Zap I wondered how anyone could live in such a place although I am sure there are lots of worse places around.  In Dnepr, I remember looking at the city and wondering why anyone would want to leave there.  If I was interested in real estate in the FSU I could think of no better place than Dnepr.

After Jacks party, three gals and I headed out on the town.  The one very beautiful blond said she had a car and would drive.  The car turned out to be a brand new Mercedes and she stopped at her apartment to get something and just from the appearance I am quite sure her apartment was in Moct.  I had a definate feeling she would not be happy living in my little villiage.

It sounds like you are having a great time and I am enjoying all the photos.
