vwrw I can't speak for what the Russian educational system says about Europe, Asia and Russia but in the British educational system the dividing line between Europe and Asia is the Urals.  This means that Moscow and St. Pete are considered to be in Europe while the parts of Russia that are east of the Urals are considered to be part of Asia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ural_Mountains

the same in the Russian educational system.

Humm, so some of us married Asian girls and didn't even know it. :cluebat:

Siberia is an extensive region constituting almost all of Northern Asia.  ;)

It seems to me that "controlled" governments do not like to report bad news. Hence the lack of info on AIDS/HIV.
I think the Russian government is honestly worried about loss of population but they don't know what to do. I am surprised they are so willing to let people leave the country. Big brain drain.

actually the Russian government does report about AIDS/HIV and tries to fight against the spread of the diseases.

acctBill, it is American educational system that considers Russia to be a separated geographic realm. I do not remember what the Russian educational system says on this account.

I guess the stakes are high enough for Americans to reconsider where Europe ends and Asia starts. He-he.  8)

I think the US educational system doesn't consider Russia to be a separate continent or mainland, but a state (or a country) in the Eurasian continent, and of course Russia has borders with other countries.

My question is the lack of sources.
Who/what are being quoted?

The source is "Geography-Realms, Regions, and Concepts" 14th edition by blij and muller. The textbook is approved by several pages of professors from different universities.

That's how I learned it in New York,,,,

According to the book and all the professors who approved it, the world is divided into 12 realms, namely Europe, Russia, North America, Middle America , and South America, Subsaharan Africa, Austral realm, South Asia and East Asia and so on. Thus, Russia is a separate realm and calling it as eastern Europa is as wrong as labling China as Eastern Europe.

All 50 states have different standards.

I can only speak for my small town. We also had a special elective class called " History of the USSR "
We were a few years behind in text books,, LoL

de Blij and Muller are referring to "cultural geography", which takes into account many factors (historical, economic, political, and physical), not physical geography.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

They do use comprehensive approach and consider physical,  historical, economic, and political factors in their classification, with physical factor being the key one that is why the book has title - geography, not cultural geography or something else.

The text’s definitions -

“A geographic realm is a large regional unit based on broad multiple criteria – reflecting physical, economic, political, urban, historical, and population as well as cultural geography.”  (page 12)

and

Geographic Realm - "The basic spatial unit of our regionalization scheme.  Each realm is defined in terms of its synthesis of its total human geography – a composite of its leading cultural, economic, historical, political, and appropriate environmental features. " (page 7)

The number of TV programs slamming marriage to foreigners has been scaled back but the government continues to offer cash payments for families who have babies.

I was able to report on the beginning of the most recent 2010 census and have detailed it with photos here: http://russianreport.wordpress.com/2010/10/19/russia-begins-taking-the-2010-census/

Follow up after the census results: http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=13239.msg261587;topicseen#msg261587

Yes, the rate is declining but why?

Are Russians having less sex?

Or are they having more sex with better birth control methods?

Or are men shooting blanks or are more women infertile?

Fertility is heading back up but still not back to pre-1990 levels,

Immigration remains high.

And, of course, all those WM keep heading over there and rescuing those poor, aging women from a fate worse than....something.
