Finding a job in Russia, other than teaching English
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:38:17 PM »
I know this is nearly impossible, but are there any good sources to find a job as an American who is: not a Russian citizen, not fluent in Russian, is not an executive, or who is not a programmer?

I don't know what your work background is, but have you looked into employment opportunities at the American Embassy in Moscow?

It might be easier if you listed what capabilities you have, in addition to what you haven't ;).

Thus far, you could qualify as a good assistant to Fat Yuri (http://russianwomendiscussion.com/mwiki/index.php/RWD_Glossary), though :D.

There are international Oil and Gas companies in Russia and FSU countries needing specialized high skill workers in the oil and gas exploration and production fields. If you background include geosciences or drilling or pipelines, etc, you should get easily a job there.

I'm almost finished with my Bachelor's degree in Project Management and Government Acquisitions, and I plan to enter a Masters of Science in Administration for Contract and Acquisition Management next year.

IBM has project manager jobs in Russia and eastern Europe.  There are employment agencies with job listings.   Check this web site about living and working in Europe:

This guy has one of the top blogs about his expat living and working in Brno.  He is a project manager for IBM:

Why Russia?  How about eastern Europe?  They say they will hire Americans if you are willing to work for local wages,  but my guess is they prefer not to hire Americans.   It may be difficult to get a job if you don't live near there.   Are you willing to travel there (at your own expense) just for a job interview?

Here's one for Moscow expats:

There are jobs available in Russia but in specialized sectors.  Fluency in Russian is needed for almost all jobs.  Sectors such as the oil and gas industry employ foreigners with skills in the oil and gas sector.  Usually the employers are foreign companies such as Shell or BP.

The good news is that many of these jobs don't require fluency in Russian.  Unfortunately these jobs are usually in the field.  This means in places in the middle of nowhere, places like Sakhalin Island, north of Japan.
