You go to the site called "Real Russia" in London, you get a Russian visa through the mail for £116. About five days, one form, no pain.

Manny, I read online a few pages from the book you co-authored with Stuart Smith & Olga Maslova. I got it off eBay now and will spend time reading it all over Christmas.

Your English is excellent!

Thank you :)

When I was in Odessa, I stopped by the office of Learning Systems Ukraine LLC on 14, Rishelyevskaya St. to enquire if they needed English teachers.

For a brief moment I really toyed with the idea of relocating to Odessa as English teacher and learning Russian on site. I'm still thinking of doing it for a few months just to get an understanding of your tricky language.

Actually, there are some guys here who used to teach English in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities. It seems to be quite a popular idea now, though I'm not sure if it's well-paid :)

Are you a freelancer or working for a school or college?

I'm a freelancer and work part-time for a private school :)

Nat, from my own experience in the UK I know that English teachers are just getting by, even when in full-time employment for schools teaching children. And teaching adults has never been a better paid job either.

I can imagine it not being different in Ukraine. If I can ask you that but how do you make ends meet if you are freelancer on a part-time basis?

My cousin had a second job as city tour guide for American tourists in Berlin when she started working as an English teacher in Germany.

Egregio signore Sandro43! Molto bene. Distinti saluti.
I appreciate your effort, but did you get that out of a manual entitled "Business Correspondence in Italian" or similar ;D? BTW, signore should be Signor (capital S, final E dropped before a name), or Sig. ;).

I am, Sir, Your ob't. servant,
Sandro

Sandro, you got me there. I know a few bits and bobs in Italian. So far, Italian waiting staff at local pizzerias have been at the receiving end of my attempts. It never failed to entertain the native speakers, rest assured.

My favourite is assolutamente si when asked if I would like more wine, and assolutamente no when they came with the bill.

That usage is frowned upon by purists as an often unnecessary 'overkill' ;). It became popular some years ago, probably from the 'Absolutely!' one can frequently hear in US movies - which are dubbed here.

How about opening your eyes?

Dear all,

Thank you to those who have made meaningful postings, I really got a lot out of it.

Now it's time to act. The first step is to implement your suggestions, especially ML's advice on devising a smart profile for non-agency websites and take it from there.

From now on, I'll run a more careful screening process regarding language abilities. Also, I will bear in mind Ade's advice on the age gap, i.e. the ideal UW / RW should be 30+ to ensure a long-term bond.

Best of luck to those still searching,
H.
