IELTS for UK fiancee Visa
« on: January 20, 2012, 02:54:29 PM »
Me and my Russian gf have decided to take things further and plan our being together on a more permanent basis. Originally we planned for her to get a visit visa so she can come here for a few months to see if we can actually live together and still get along so well before we decided anything like marriage. Because she does not 'officially' work in Ukraine and has no dependencies we are worried about applying for a visit visa and having it rejected and thus hindering a fiancée visa if we decided to apply afterwards. I think it would look odd to immigration if we were refused the visit visa and applied for fiancée visa afterwards. So what we have decided to agree on is for her to have a fiancée visa and come here with the plan to get married within the time limit if we still feel that things are great and that is what we want.

So begins the process. We have found a date for her to take the IELTS test in Donetsk in April so she is panicking about it already. We understand she needs a band 4.0 pass mark. Has anyone here had experience of this test and any tips or suggestions? Her English is really quite good on a conversational level. A bit Americanized from TV that we need to work on but in general its really good.
Why do I always insist on choosing the difficult options?

But actually, this is something new for me.

Are you  saying that intended immigrants into UK must first pass an English proficiency exam?

Yes, since 2010 all major commonwealth countries have a requirement that the immigrant speaks and understands a good level of English.

No, for marrying a commonwealth citizen, Uk, Canada, Australia, NZ etc etc. I think the US has its own language test for citizenship but its not nearly as complicated as the IELTS that is needed for my girl.
