It's never too late, so relax and search out those threads that will benefit you the most at the beginning. I was 51 when I first touched down in Moscow, and had no benefit of discussion board advice until we were well into our visa process. In retrospect, I avoided many potential landmines, and relied much on gut instinct and a fabulous woman who watched out for our mutual interest. Such ladies are out there, and in great numbers. One of the keys is recognizing them, something that cannot possibly be achieved through photos alone.
