There are over four million porn sites on the internet. In January this year there were over 4.3 million searches for porn in Russian search engines. There are about 2-2.5 billion sales of porn over the internet every year. Experts believe that the minimum amount of money need to set up a pay porn site which shows legal content is USD 25 000. The trading of pirated music makes up a large part of these revenues.

The March edition of the Russian version of Forbes Magazine discusses who makes money from trading in porn, spam and pirate music on the internet. There are a number of Russian computer experts living near Kyoto , capital of Ecuador, who sell pornography over the internet. All of them are about 30 years old and are adult webmasters trading in porn.

About ten computer experts own housing complexes in Cyprus. There are many people trading in pornography based in Prague. There are thousands of people in Russia trading in pornography, pirated music and distributing spam. Their trading is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The trading of pornography over the internet is a huge worldwide industry with 2-2.5 billion sales taking place each year. It is thought that 200-250 million dollars end up in the pockets of Russian adult webmasters.

They buy the "goods" from production studios of which there are about thirty in Russia . They pay 90-250 dollars for 20-40 scenes. The owners of the material then distribute the material to pay sites. The clients of these sites are foreigners who pay to enter the sites using credit cards. There are about 40 porn companies in Russia and each one controls a dozen web sites. Each company makes on average 120-140 000 dollars a month. Experts say that a few Russian companies make 300-500 000 dollars a month from the sale of pornography.

There are also individual webmasters, who do not own their own material, but attract viewers to other pay sites. They create free pages where they post pictures which encourage viewers to look at material which you have to pay for. Such individuals earn 2-3 000 dollars a month. Experts think that 5-7 000 American webmasters earn up to ten times more than those in Russia .

The penalty for the illegal distribution of pornographic material is a fine or imprisonment for up to two years. However, not one person has ever been convicted of selling pornography online. The problem is that the law does not have one definite definition of what constitutes pornographic material.

The distribution of spam appears to be a hugely profitable business. Statistics show that about 40% of spam advertises medicine and beauty treatments. Sending a message to one million addresses takes only fifteen minutes and costs 90 dollars. If a company only has a couple of hundred dollars to spend on advertising, it has no other choice but to spam people.

In 1997 only a third of emails received were spam but by 2005 the figure had risen to about 80%. Hostility towards spammers has occurred very quickly. In July 2005 when the head of "The Centre of American English" Vardan Kushnir, one of the most famous distributors of spam on the internet, was killed, thousands of users openly expressed their delight at his death. The 35 year old man was killed in his flat on Sadovai-Karetnaya Street in Moscow.

The Centre of American English became one of the most well-known companies to Russian internet users. It is said that at the height of its popularity between 2003 and 2004 the centre sent out up to 25 million spam messages to email addresses. By the end of 2004 about 7.9 million people each week were receiving messages from the company.

Computer experts believe that over the next few years, as new internet technology is brought out, it will become increasingly more difficult for the spammers.

The trading of pirate music is also big business. Figures suggest that seven out of every ten mp3 files downloaded from Russian sites are downloaded by foreigners. On average each file costs only 10 cents on Russian pay sites.

Distribution of porn, spam and mp3 files becomes big business in Russia

Well, I'm obviously in the wrong business...

Part of my job involves doing searches on the internet to see how our  firewall reacts to different search querys. I have found that any  search that returns a link in any other language than English will come  up in our browsers at work. It ain't a pretty site. I've had a few  chats with the info security area but it seems to be not worth their  time to work on something like this. My argument was that if they can  find porn then they can also find hacks into the system. Gotta love  government. If they can't read it they don't want to hear about it. Can  anyone say... stupid?

Not sure that i will believe the rest of the article when i read this... i agree that when you translate "Kyoto" from Japanese to english, it mean capital city... but Kyoto is not the capital of Ecuador... Quito is the capital of Ecuador...

When a journalist make so big error... what to think about the rest of the article ?
