A question to any of the women from the FSU who are familiar with facebook and are still dating.

Have you ever thought about looking up the guy that you're talking to online on facebook?  If you don't have their last name, you can't look them up so easily.  But, if the guy you're talking to was willing to have you on his friends list, you could look at his profile and see if he's some total psycho.  It might even be possible to talk to his exes, so that you could see for yourself what kind of guy he is.

Now, I understand that many of the men who are searching for women from the FSU are pretty old.  But, I think that these days even most old people have a facebook account.  So, it isn't impossible to look a guy up on facebook.

How do most of you feel about this idea?

On the reverse side, the guys could look up what kind of girl you are.  They could even spot if you are some sort of con-artist or are the real deal.

LOL. What's 'pretty old' to you? The shuffle board brotherhood or the Bingo squad?

Old enough to be my dad.  If you're plus or minus 5 years my dad's age, then you're pretty old.

Your dad's age is old?

You just foretold much of your own mindset with that statement. What brings a 29 year old whipper snapper to a forum of old guys with experience with Russian and Ukrainian women anyway? :D

Why I don't want to play bingo . . . even when I get old enough to.

pemdas,

Most RW are pretty sharp ;)

Finding a guy on facebook is well within their capabilities,
although i'm not sure how much they can really tell about a man from that?
My wife , when we were  dating , could simply google my name and find all kinds of information, certainly a facebook profile would also show up in a google search as well?
It would have showed her my interests,my occupation ,and my employer, as well as location..
which she already knew ?
I suppose she could have confirmed that info ?
but if wanting to confirm things, then dozens of other sites like my employers, or several organizations I belong to, would be more reliable and just as easy to find. *shrugs*

Bear in mind most RW are probably far more active on Russian based sites than on facebook?
Sure they *might* have a facebook profile,,

but various  social media sites like
vkontakt , odnoklassniki.ru  would likely be more popular for them,if you are looking.

As others have asked, why Facebook?

Most RW, unless they already have some sort of a Western connection, aren't on Facebook. Hundreds of thousands more are on vk, etc, because of the language.

Is "vkontakt" vk.com

You could be right about those sites, but being more popular, but I think that most people will still have facebook profiles in the FSU in addition to have a profile on these sites.  Although, vk.com looks alot like facebook.  Some people might use that instead of facebook.

I don't know about that.  There are probably FSUW who are on facebook even without any Western connections.
Also, the default language that facebook comes in from you depends on the country of origin your IP address is from.  So, people in Russia will see facebook in Russian by default.  Even if it isn't, they can always change their language preference later.

Of course there are. There are some English speakers on vk too that have little to no Russian skills. Facebook is used on Russia, in fact the service is used along with many others by the opposition to post rally (demonstration) locations and maps. But that doesn't mean that Russian speakers like it better than vk or od. The primary language of Facebook is English. The primary language of vk is Russian. Unless a lady is specifically looking to make contacts with men from the West she likely is more comfortable on a service like vk.

I don't know how likely it is for a Russian person to have a vk.com profile instead of a facebook profile.  I am willing to bet that most have both.  Facebook has grown in popularity, partly due to the apps that it has.  I am not aware of what kind of apps are on vk.com.

It is very likely for a Russian to have a vk profile without Facebook. I have both for that very reason--some contacts are only on vk and these are 100% Russian. I have both Russian and English contacts on my Facebook with the Russians being in the vast minority.

In fact, I don't know if it's even possible for 3rd parties to develop apps on vk.com either.  I know that facebook has the facebook API and they have a developers' version of facebook.  My "normal" facebook profile is completely separate from my developer's facebook profile.  Facebook offers so much documentation and support to developers who wish to create applications for use on facebook. I don't know if vk.com offers anything like that to Russian developers.

I'm not an app developer but of course vk has apps. I don't know if they approach apps and development in the same manner as Facebook.

I edited that post, which you took from another thread.  It appears that they don't.  They just have some Flash apps, but nothing based on vk-specific libraries or anything.

Facebook is pretty sophisticated.  I don't have my own vk.com profile, but from what I have seen it appears that vk.com is a simple version of facebook.  It doesn't appear to offer much support for games or anything else.

It even looks like how facebook used to look like when I first started using it in college.  It's more of a clone of an archaic version of facebook if anything.

I like vk better in some ways, for example you can post more than one photo on a message, etc. VK also allows easy sharing of music with their own player, something a bit more cumbersome on Facebook.

Well, you're familiar with facebook, right?  Are the apps on vk.com nearly sophisticated as the ones on facebook?  Facebook offers alot of support for developers, it's partly why facebook became so popular that people stopped using MySpace altogether.  Back when facebook was for college students only, most people were using MySpace because they didn't have a choice.  But, now facebook is open to everyone and it's gained more popularity than MySpace.

vk.com is straight-up annoying me when I tried to register on it just now.  It couldn't find my university.  It apparently only has knowledge about a few of the major cities in the US and never even heard of the town I went to college in.

At least on facebook, I can find my school right away.

Okay, nm, I got it.

Looking at vk.com, it definitely does look like a facebook from "back in the day" when I first started using it in college - no games, no news feed, no timeline.

LOL.  I remember when they first started to use the newsfeeds, many people complained about it, calling it the "stalker mode".  So, facebook allowed some people to opt out of it.  But, eventually they forced everyone to use it - just like they did with timeline for the non-college generations.

I guess that my point is that facebook has got to be really popular in the FSU and that you can use facebook to network with women from the FSU.  I can't provide any statistics, but I do believe that people in the FSU have more reason to get facebook profiles than just because they have Western friends.

vk.com is pretty archaic compared to facebook.  It seems that a person could get bored with it after a while.  Unless its simplicity is what attracts people to it.

However, facebook offers lots of games, and there are so many open-sourced projects out there for facebook.  Plus, let's not forget to mention, how facebook has mobile apps on Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone.

I don't see why people in the FSU would just simply ignore facebook for "language" or just simply because it's based in Europe.  Chances are, most people in the FSU were already on facebook before vk.com came around.

My wife and most of her friends (early to mid twenties in age) never had a Facebook profile in Ukraine.
They had no use for it and think it is a bit goofy and boring, so the opposite of your thoughts. Now several have a FB account but do not use it as often as VKontakte.

As far as vk.com being archaic I was under the impression that it offers more than facebook. I don't have a vk account and rarely use my facebook so may be missing something but in vk.com users have music playlists to listen to and can watch pirated movies before they come out on video. I believe it even has a Skype type interface to talk online.

There are Russians on FB. If my wife's FB page is any indication most of the Russians on FB are ex-pats. My wife is also on vk and odnoklassniki (sp). Most of her contacts are on vk.

It doesn't matter what you think here pemdas, Facebook isn't hugely popular in Russia despite FB's attempts at being so. It's popular, Russians know about it. They chose to use other venues. As to why you'd have to ask 50 million Russians. FB didn't spread there as it did at US universities at a vital time of expansion. It is what it is, don't let it bother you so much  :D

No, before VK became popular, Odnoklassniki (Russia's My Space clone) was the most popular social site in the FSU. VK has plenty of apps and plenty of games. And, unlike Facebook, on VK, you can download any song or any film you wish.

Most Russian speakers have a Facebook account for two reasons: to try to make contact with foreigners and/or for making themselves seem more cosmopolitan. I know quite a few Western-oriented liberal types here who speak English quite well. They all have Facebook accounts, but even they spend most of their time on VK.
