I'd say so. I remember 30 years ago they were not near as common, sparked plenty of conversation to the tattooed or behind their back  but yeah, very passe. I rarely even noticed them anymore. Several months ago I moved to Oklahoma and it is very difficult to find a bone ugly, over weight woman without a tatt. Just as surprising the numbers of strikingly beautiful girls covered in tatts is alarming to me as well. I'm not talking about the trailer trash chain gang tattoos most are very elaborate.

I haven't noticed this to any degree in Russia. My wife seems quite proud of that and attributes it to the prison connotation in the Russian mentality

What worry me more is that a lot of porno girls and prostitute get tattoos. So when you find an FSU woman with tattoos it is difficult to know who is she, cause assessing her past is barely impossible, in particular she is 35 or more.

It's a broad sweeping generalization but from what I can determine, most RW who sport tattoos wouldn't be far off from your idea of porn stars or prostitutes. Tattoos in Russia are not only closely associated with convicts but also the Russian mafia which tightly controls the other vices of porn and prostitution. Tattoos generally have a much deeper meaning in the East than the West other than body art

When in doubt, try submitting her tattooed photo to TinEye (http://tineye.com/), it may come up with previous photos from a 'juicier' site .
