The Death of Rasputin

96 Years ago this month members of the Royal Family conspired to kill Rasputin, whom they considered to be a threat to the monarchy.

1916 seems a long time ago, but I still feel that the relavance is pertinent as I believe that the indulgence of Rasputin by Nicolas and Alexandra, followed by the cover up by the royals when a peasant (Rasputin) was killed by members of their own family contributed to the great disconnect already felt by the Russian people. 

Who knows.  The fickle finger of fate points that if the Tsar's son was not a hemophilliac and needed the consultation of holy men, maybe there would have been no Rasputin, a more civil transition of power and ultimately, a completely different landscape of Russian politics. 

But the read is fun and I enjoyed it.  As a short article it will make you a (semi) historian when it comes to the topic of Rasputin.

The article fails to mention a few facts that may have had some influence on Rasputin's murder on 29th december, 1916:

1. Felix Yusupov had studied at University College, Oxford from 1909 to 1912.

2. Rasputin was against Russia's entering WWI, then tried to convince Nicholas II to make a separate peace with Germany after the appalling losses of Russian lives at the front.

3. British intelligence was aware of '2' and added their support to Yusupov's intentions, since Russia's withdrawal from the conflict could have made the situation much worse on the Western front - as indeed happened after the Revolution.
