Want to Make Your Wife Happy?-- Russian TV
« on: April 05, 2006, 08:26:53 PM »
Ok not sure this is in the right forum but I hope so. My wife's favorite show in Russia was DOM 2. It comes on Russian TV channel THT which is not carried here in the States that I know of.

We just got the Russian package thru Direct TV which carried RTP and Channel 1 which are ok but THT is apparently where most of the good stuff comes on.

Well...after a LONG search over many months I finally lucked into a website that carried MANY Russian tv channels including THT. Boy was my wife happy!

Go to www.corbina.com and then click on the little tv thing in the middle. Poof...Russian tv.

My wife loves me a lot.  :D

While I think it is a noble gesture on your part to offer her Russian TV I would caution anyone with a RW that is just learning English to NOT give her Russian TV. You want her immersed as much as possible in English to learn it as quickly as possible. My wife specifically didn't want it once I explained my reason for it. Her English progressed very rapidly and within 6 months here she had a much better than minimum wage job. When she arrived here she knew almost no English so we must have done something right.

If your wife is already proficient then this is a different situation. So if your RW wants to find Russian TV for free go here (high speed Internet is a plus to watch):

http://www.russianinternet.com/video/

To listen to many available Russian radio stations go here:

http://www.russianinternet.com/radio/

I am sure Rose will like it.
Take time to learn the language. Even a little can go a long ways...

Get off your butt and go! Don't make excuses why you can't do it, find a way to make it work! Always go with a backup plan too!!!

What exactly does this Corbina Technology offer? Having a hard time reading it... (My Russian ain't that great just yet) :P (DOH! Never mind - I just started clicking and got it to stream! :brightidea: Wow - Too cool! Thanks for the link!!)

Kinda in the same vein, I've been looking at these "Slingshot" or "Boomerang" Boxes that allow you to view your home cable/SAT feed on the road via laptop... Anyone tried one of these yet?

I just checked FOX Sports Net - and they're not carrying ANY Rugby in 2006....

So, no Super 14, Currie Cup or Tri-Nations.... Grrrrr!

Thats a disagrace.

try http://www.mediazone.com/

They have the Super14 and test matches. So you can watch NZ win the lot.

Haven't tried it myself, but its could be the answer to see real sport in the US.

Muchas Gracias Captmonk1.  I've been looking for a TNT link forever without luck.

Here's a pay for view link for movies and other shows that my wife likes.

Dragonfly - anything you can do to totally immerse yourself in any new language that is foreign to you will help you learn it. I never suggested she not speak with her family in Russian. It was very hard for me to NOT speak with her in Russian. The entire time we dated all we spoke was Russian. So I had to really try to make sure I spoke to her in English to help her learn more quickly. Even though we are divorced now she still appreciates the effort I put in to helping her learn.

She speaks better English now than almost any RW/UW I know here. Even a friend of hers who was hear 10 years has a much greater accident than my ex-wife.  We must have done something correctly. I think it helped her a lot that I knew Russian very well so I could explain the nuances of English for her.

Don't think that I was a tryant who never let her speak Russian at all. It wasn't up to me to "let" her do anything. She was impressed at how well I learned Russian and we used a similar process to help her learn English. You can't study every minute but we did as much as was effective. She didn't need Russian TV as I have over 400 films in Russian (some original Russian or some English but in Russian language) including many classics. So it was not an issue. Problem is once someone has Russian TV they will often watch it too much. She NEVER wants to watch Russian TV now even though we are divorced and can buy whatever she wants. It was never about $$$, just to learn as effectively as she could.

If I was working in Russia again I still wouldn't have satellite English TV. I could have had it while there but I never bothered. I watched the Russian programs and would sometimes go to see some things in English Internet.

She had a choice and agreed to fully immerse herself in English. It worked very well. She had a better than minimum wage in 6 months after coming here.

I have to agree with Dragonfly.  It should be the woman's choice.  I think in the case where she is trying to learn the language she should on her own choose to watch some Amerian TV.   When I was just in Moscow I watched some of the Amerian movies dubbed but tried to pick out the English but I also watched some Russian TV and it did help a little with the language.   Cartoons seem to be the thing that helped me the most.  Perhaps I am already in my second childhood.

When my former Fiancee was here all she watched was Russian TV.  I never really said anything but it was Russian TV, Russian TV and more Russian TV.   I sort of felt she should be watching some American TV and I had the Subtitles turned on so she could understand it better.    About two days before she left I found out the reason she had been watching all the Russian TV was she didn't know how to change the channels.

I'm the same way Turbo - I watched the Simpson's on THT in Russian over the weekend (thanks to this thread!!) - and grasped more of that - than most of my Rosetta Stone studies!!

With that train of thought, does Russian TV have anything like "Sesame Street" on DVD but in Russian (for Russian children) ?? - I've found 1 bootleg DVD on eBay - but don't know if it's American Sesame Street for Russians? Or Vice-versa? Anyone?

ULITSA SEZAM (SESAME STREET)

The collection of educational and entertaining programs for children. All three best sellers on this disc:
1. Uchimsya schitat i pisat
2. Zeliboba i ego druzya
3. Luchshie pesni

"Ulitsa Sezam" - one of the children's transfers most popular in the world. The Russian teachers and psychologists, experts actively took part in creation of show not only American and English, but also on development of the child which have taken care of availability and appeal of the program to preschool children and children till 12 years. "Ulitsa Sezam" will learn not only to reading and the account, in the game form children learn about the basic norms and values of a modern society, about positive and negative character traits, will learn to resolve conflicts in the peace way. The program brings up self-esteem, optimism, an active vital position in the child and stimulates inquisitiveness. Together with Zeliboba, Kermit, Businka, Znak and also other heroes guys not only to much will learn, but also will meet new friends.

You're right it is a disgrace.... Out of 775+ channels on DirecTV - No Rugby! Grrrrr! - Anyway, had seen this link once before - and will probably end up buying a package if I can download and save in a decent "format" to watch on the real telly and watch my beloved "All Blacks" destroy the lot~ LOL-

Just the same, Many thanks for the links all-

Nad' has been here now for what, 9 months and we've no interest in Russian TV really. German and Italian, yes, but no russian!

Also I've suggested she goes to the Russian party thing they have at uni Wed evening but she's not interested. She has a Russian friend at uni but she's been in UK since she was a kid, her mum is an early MOB!

Funny really, seems like she's deliberaterly avoiding contact with other Russians, which I've seen before on boards like this. I've no problem with it.

Going back to Russian TV, I found it mostly pants, but for some reason I was strangley drawn to a detective series called Street of a thousand lamps or sth! But mostly I didn't find much, and the advert for Lay's crisps annoyed me! Plus Lay's crisps are crap!

One thing she misses is ryazhenka, I bought her what I thought was a suitable substitute in the local Polish Shop, called Maslanka. It wasn't, but it was fkin awful, looked smelt and tasted like sour milk.

And we've heard their is an Orthodox Church in Manchester, we fancy a visit, show the kids. Make them realise how boring the Catholic service is - like a preacher show.....

Sorry Brad, it was "late" and I was just clicking channels - Around 1 a.m. MST and even then, I'm not sure if it was THT or one of the other channels offered on the main page... Wish there was a way to TiVo it... Cheers...

Another hint at least for the Russian readers and speakers...which I am not.

The site I listed above also has now a feature where you can record the show you want to watch...and watch it later.  It's a little buggy but I and especially Katerina thinks its way cool that she can now watch shows she records while she is at work...right on the internet!

Took some digging - But for you (fellow) Rugby nuts out there - Seems Setanta Sports will carry a limited number of UK & Tri-Nations  :clapping: matches in the USA afterall -  as well as some Super 14 - but admit (on their website) that support/demand is waining and may dump it :(

It's via DirecTV - www.setanta.com (Click Rugby) -OR-
http://www.setanta.com/portal/systemcontent/page?open&systemtitle=rugbyleague

---------------------------------------------------------------

Rugby League

Setanta Sports are very proud to carry Rugby League for the first time this year and will be showing a whole host of games LIVE and often Delayed as well.

We will possibly add more games depending on the level of demand.

It is not certain if we will be able to continue showing these games though so we need all the Rugby League support we can get to make it work. So tell all your friends to support the coverage and hopefully it will be a big success ! Available on DIRECTV Ch. 615 for only $11.99 per month - Call 1-800-DIRECTV to sign up.
Contact us and tell us what you think email: Setanta North America

We will show :
Super League 2006
2 games a week

The Challenge Cup 2006
At least one game Per Round
Quarters, Semis & Final

TRI - NATIONS 2006 (RL)
First time held in Australia
All Seven Matches will be shown

Taz, I'll check it, thank you.

I need to agree with TAZ, the best way to progress in studing English, is total isolation from the native language. It's tuff, but it can be done.
One way why it brings good results is following:
when person raised in, let say Russia, this person not only speaks in Russian, language is strongly related to cognition. All thoughts in the head of such person will be in Russian. If we'll isolate such person from her native language, at first, while learning, she will think in Russian, and then translate it in English. But the trick is to learn how to think in English.
If I would have to learn another language and had a luxury of moving to that country, I'd isolate myself from everything which would have relation to my native language.

Agreed. That is the perfect approach to learn English and think in English.

RE: Russian TV in America -

Meant to add this yesterday - but forgot...

For those of you with an extra patch of "land" (or space for a larger dish) - I've been researching "FTA" (Free to Air) channels on C-Band satellites - It's pretty cool in that there's over 9 USA sats circling the USA (more in Europe too) that offer "Free" Russian/Ukrainian Channels (as well as a slew of Europe/UK/Latin/S. American channels) as well...

"FTA" is just as it says - "free" satellite! - But the equipment costs and setup are quite costly - You can combine C-Band (Big Dish) with Ku-Band (Dish/DirecTV) and toss in 4DTV (all digital) for good measure - and get like a gazillion channels LOL -  Most "packages" (programmes) are 40% less than going with DirecTV or DISH FWIW - Plus you can still "tag" BOTH Dish or DirecTV as wanted - Pretty cool!

You can find out more at www.callnps.com -

Cheers,

KB
