Parallel to PKeel's Die is Cast
« on: April 15, 2013, 08:36:47 PM »
Glad to hear you are on the ground and that all is going OK so far.

I would advise you to maximize your time with the gal and the country, and only take enough daily notes that you can write more extensive TR when you are back in USA.

Best to you.

If others haven't already told you, plan to go to:

Panorama - - - in town, about Crimean War.
Diorama - - - about WWII, south of town.
Balaclava - - - south of Sevastopol. submarine base, Genovese fort up on high hill.
East of Balaclava - - - Valley of Death in Crimean War.
Alfred Lord Tennyson - - - Charge of the Light Brigade
Chersones - - - Greek era ruins northeast of town.
Prince Vladimir was baptized there and brought Christianity to the area.
Bakhchysarai east of Sevastopol.  Palace of Kahns, Monastery up on side of mountain, Jewish village at top of mountain.

A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

As much as I appreciate the encouragement of ML, it seems a bit odd to start a thread about a trip report without reply. After all if the poster of that trip report wants it to be discussed, he could open one that allows replies.

I think the gist of this thread is so that we can make suggestions to Pkeel without interrupting his TR as is what usually happens when you get the usual forum trolls coming on and posting non-sense.

And why should they not appear in here ?
If he wishes advise on anything he can post a thread. If he does not, why should anyone open a thread to put the comments he wishes to avoid ?

Ah, now for that, you would have to talk to the creator of this thread!  ;)

Where are all the "troll posts" in the last few TR's posted?
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

You have to apply for a special password to read them, and also pass a rather difficult quiz; and access cannot be through MS or Apple operating systems, but rather only through a Linux operating system.

. . . it seems a bit odd to start a thread about a trip report without reply. . . .

Thanks for opening this thread.  I don't mind answering questions, it's just that TR's often get cluttered with arguments and irrelevant stuff that makes them difficult reading.

Pkeel will also thank me later.

I do this as a public service, and also because I feel like being very pushy.

Also, I am the only one authorized on this board to create these parallel trip reports.

I have authorization from William who predated Patrick who predated Dan as owner.  And that's the truth.

As said, I appreciate your advise. However I do feel that pkeel has a say in this. If he is ok with it no problem, in fact having one report without disturbance and another advise thread is not a bad idea, provided the poster of the trip report does not do so to avoid his choices being discussed on the side.

Kind of Statler & Waldorf these parallel threads.  ;D

+1
I suspect that Keel will reply to this thread as he has time.  He was considering not even posting a trip report because of all the trash that interrupts them.  The continuity of TR's that are posted in the Sans Respones section are much easier to read by newbies after the fact.

The parallel thread provides an opportunity for members to offer advice or ask questions.  It's better here rather than cluttering up the TR.

Thanks ML for starting the parallel thread.  I appreciated it when you did it for me.

You guys are starting to sound like a bunch of bleeding-heart liberals.

So you know what is good for him, even if he doesn't want it, eh?

Very good example of the the kind of useless posts that clutter up TR's in the open section.

Presumably, PKeel was PM'd and advised to start a TR in the "non comment thread".  No issues with that, but I do have issues with the assertions that TR's are always derailed by "forum trolls", and passing that on to new posters as "gospel".

Here are the last 4 trip reports, with comments.  Please point to the "troll posts" that "derailed" any of those TR's -

ETA - IIRC, we picked up one new valued member, RussianBear, as a result of one of those "with comments" Trip Reports.   I don't think that would have occurred with a parallel thread format.

IMHO if a member wishes to post a comment thread on a trip report sans comments hecan do so himself. Any other member who has a burning desire to utter his opinion can do so in PM, or wait until the poster of a trip report gives permission by starting a thread.
Anything else should be locked by the mods.

Maybe. Unless the bull lives in Europe and he's entitled to state assistance and he can have someone else shoulder the burden of feeding the calves.  ;D

I don't have a problem with this TR.  I am though very busy having fun, so don't expect to see me here.

As a quick aside I am very pleased with Chris of travel2sevastopol.com the apartment is great and he made everything very easy to do.

PK, it's probably just as well you credit card didn't work in the ATM.  I have never used credit card in an ATM because there is usually a hefty up front fee for getting cash.  But, it does have some value as a last resort back up.

I have also had some very good pork steak meals in Ukraine.  Don't know quite why they are so tasty; it is not a common item in most USA restaurants.

Didn't know you were going  to Yalta, or I could have given you several places to see there.  Actually, a week or more needs to be devoted to Yalta to take most of it in.  If you see this and haven't gotten your plans laid out; I would say the Palace at Livadia and Verontsoff's Palace would be your best bets.  Other places would be Alexander's Palace, Botanical Garden, Swallows Nest and a trip  up Ah Pietria (spelling) mountain.
