Easter
« on: April 12, 2006, 07:47:24 AM »
Would like to hear from the ladies on this. What is the most appropriate gift for a lady for Easter. Is an Easter gift welcomed? If flowers, then what kind? Anything else? Thanks

Viking, you can't go wrong with flowers. I'd choose roses or tulips. I dont know whether your lady likes chocolates, but I just dont get the whole idea of giving each other giant chocolate Easter eggs. I end up giving mine away. I'd go for flowers and some lovely spring-scent perfume.

M and M

Thanks. Can I assume that Easter in the FSU/Russia falls on the same day as here?

It is my understanding that the Eastern Orthodox Easter is Sunday, April 23 this year.

Orthodox Easter is very different from yours.
We do not make/receive  gifts, we do not have Easter Egg Hunt for kids, and Easter Bunny  definately does not bring any baskets :D

We just dye eggs and bake Kulich (Easter Bread). Some people go to  church. That is pretty much it. It is a very serious holiday for us -  no fun included, you know? It is very sacred and respected day for us,  if you know what I mean.

So, actually, if my husband would bring me flowers on Easter, it would  be very confusing (like - "What did I do?" or even better - "What did YOU  do?" he-he-he). It's the same like you will give a present to someone on  the President's Day or something. It's not a "gift-giving/receiving"  holiday.

Vanilla, Then you are saying not to send flowers to a lady in Russia? Even if all the flower web sites are saying to do so?

I agree with Vanilla. Orthodox Easter is not for gifts at all ( except exchanging of dying eggs and bringing kulich if you visit somebody this day)

Aslo it's a day of visiting graves so flowers as a gift would be confusings

I think Easter post card would be enough for that day

Because a RW/AM marriage is a combining the East and West, I sent my RWGF a vase of flowers for her mother's grave and a baskett of goodies for her  American Easter. When I was growing up, the large family groups, would got to church and then visit the cemetary., Clean the graves that needed it and place flowers every where, evenm for those whose family's were gone. Then some times the Easter Celebrations would trun into a big church picnic and yard games, such as crockett or shuffle board on the basement floor of the church. It was a wonderfull time, I remember.:)

They are "double-dipping". They understand what is customary for the holiday in the west, and using that knowledge to guilt you into paying for  flowers with an artificially inflated price - because they can.

If you want to do something nice and score some "big points", wait a few weeks and send her Mom an American Mother's day card and flowers at that time ;).

While it's probably late now, I have always understood a card to be the appropriate gift for Easter - as Elen suggested. Speaking of Elen's post, the wife and I are very much looking forward to Midnite mass tomorrow night, and afterward recieving our loaf of kulich ordered 2 weeks ago. (locally homemade and used to raise funds for the church - delicious!)

That cacke is called kulich - there is raisins inside A recipe demands a lot of eggs in  yeast dough for that kulich would be so "high"  Actually you should be a good cooker to bake proper kulich I'm not that kind so we just buy it :D
