It also could be job related:
Quote
In addition, the disparity between white-collar and blue-collar unemployment is stunning: 4.5% among college graduates versus 10.8% for those with a high-school diploma, and 14.3% for those without one.

To an "uneducated" person like myself......this makes no sense. Now if you substituted intelligent for educated....then it would.
Yea i also thought that.. Education is no marker for being able to master new tasks.. Intelligence is. It is well illustrated here in Belgium, where everyone and their dog has a college education, cuz its only 600 euro a year  :D

Also, in Belgium if you wanna work as an automatic phone answerer and coffee maker using one language in your entire career, they will demand that you have a bachelor's degree and speak minimum 3 languages  :D  Cuz lifting the receiver is a college level skill  ;D

You do not need to be smart at all, to get a college education. Only need two things to finish university successfully: moderate wits (less than average IQ will do) and a lot of perseverance.

I'd say that an educated man in FSUW mind is someone with at least a bachelor's coupled with wide knowledge of many things.

Not only RW prefer educated men, so do AW.

There are many professions one can not practice without first having obtained a university degree.  OTOH, common sense (sound judgment in practical matters) is not common and is certainly not dependent upon having graduated from college.

My sergeant taught me that fact when I was a young second lieutenant.  I gave him an order about how to position some equipment, to which he replied "common sense is not common."  His remark caught me off guard.  I hesitated, then used my common sense by asking him,"Sarge, how would you do it?"    :D  And we did it his way.  It worked.  Mission accomplished.

IQ is not the measure of intelligence, it is the measure, of the ability to learn.

Most highly educated people have a narrow thought track. Culture has what to do with education?

Funny thing, the higher the education, the snottier people become. not more knowledgeable, because they already believe they know all. So after school they learn less. Perception is a funny thing. What it says on paper rarely translate to reality.

Seems like many have a degree, BS  :D

My experience is exactly the opposite. High education definitely correlates with higher intelligence. A PhD from a good University is much more likely to be intelligent, cultured, and committed to a life-long learning than a high school drop-out truck driver. This is just a fact of life.
I work with people who are the best in the world in their area, on a daily basis. Most of them are very interesting people, with a breadth of knowledge in different areas and general understanding of the events. Down to earth and humble too.
I've noticed that I have much more in common with a PhD from any country (as long as they speak English) than a trucker or a roofer from my own country even though we share the same first language and grew up in the same culture.

I agree with Misha and Pitbull completely.

I have often heard the putdowns of MBAs, PhDs, etc.

But those who dish out the putdowns are overlooking a simple fact.

The person getting bachelors already has the high school diploma (in most cases).  So how do they somehow become more stupid than others who have the high school diploma by virtue of getting more education?

And how does the masters graduate become more stupid than the bachelors graduate, when he/she also has the bachelors?

And how does the PhD who already has high school, bachelors and masters become more stupid than all of the above by virtue of getting more education?

And, while it is true, that PhD involves extensive study of a narrow field . . . that same person already has high school, bachelors and masters with very broad education . . . the same as those with less than PhD who are putting him/her down.

Yes, I have been around PhDs, as well as MDs, DDS, DVM, etc., who seem to not be able to cut grass, pound a nail, change spark plugs, etc.  But so what?  Most high school graduates could not do what the above could do either.

Big difference is the doctoral degreed person could within one hour learn to change a spark plug, whereas high school diplomed person couldn't do what the doctoral degreed person could do without say . . . 6-10 years of study.

That is actually an intelligent and educated person. IMHO, focused training and education has nothing to do with intelligence. Intelligence is the ability to think and ration through many complex problems on multiple platforms outside of training and education. As an example, I have known a few idiot savants that had graduate degrees. They were exemplary in their area of study and yet unable to look after themselves properly. Educated to the gills but keep the intelligence of an average 12 year old

I believe that research studies prove that people with education of BA or higher as a group have higher IQ than a group of people that do not have higher education.

Just like non-believers have higher IQ on average than believers  ;)

I did not say they became more stupid. Seems you managed to make my point. Thanks

I said more narrow minded. Example, someone with PHD, is likely to focus on his field of studies.
Thus allows him less time to see the bigger picture.

I did not say a drop out either, please state these as your words.
I would enjoy seeing the data source for the IQ testing.

Do a little research on the CEO's of the fortune 500, tell me how educated most are and to what level.

Also at no point did I say higher education was a bad thing.

I will say there are many forums of education, Hard to believe Albert Einstein was bad at grade 10 math.
Guess you fellows would have had him out driving a truck ;D

Einstein may have been bad at grade 10 math, but he still obtained a PhD.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

According to this 2006 study, 62% of S & P CEO's have an MBA or PhD.

You believe;D

Most likely they do. I don't argue that. I haven't seen any stats nor looked for them. Higher education IMHO, no doubt makes the mind fertile for higher intelligence but, is in no way a guarantee that intelligence increases with education, diplomas or pedigrees.

I can teach you something, anything and even give you a certificate but it doesn't increase your intelligence, only increases your education. Conversely, uneducated minds are more likely to be closed to increased intelligence and learning but, in no way guarantees that it will be.

You seem to be of the opinion that education and intelligence are either both present or neither present. I strongly disagree.

As most threads they veer and splinter. It's currently on whether education and intelligence are mutually inclusive. Some say yes absolutely and I say, nah, not so much. Please do and try to keep up  ;D

That was my point, As some FSUW, are looking for what is on paper.
It seems some here agree ( bet they have a piece of paper)

The conversation came to this. Education, does not always equate to intelligence.

Also does not equal culture. As with most things in life, it really comes down to what you do in life.
How diverse you are as a person and the interests you follow.

Met a farmer once, standing leaning against is fence in coveralls and rubber boots.
To look at, you think simple farmer. But as he talked you could see, quite diverse background.
Spent the afternoon talking to him, as it was he had traveled the world, dropped out of high school, to help support his family. While working, he took night courses and read, ended up with 2 degree's.
He did this while doing carpenter work, the farm was his dream in retirement.

Point is, according to some above, and the narrow view, you never would have known, as you would have only seen a farmer. I was fortunate to have met him when I was 20.
Taught me you never know who is in front of you are what they care to share with you, based on outside perceptions.

Oh my tax lawyer, partner at 30, makes 400 an hour, his night hobby is online poker and he has only gone to Disneyland with his wife and kids ( 22 times) Quite bright, no culture.

We could all give examples all day long, either way, closed mind, gets you?
