More often it wasn't vodka, but straight "medical" alcohol.

Hey, I know that medical alcohol. It is in a plastic jug labeled "Ethanol" that you add to a fruit punch and call it Hairy Bull.

SOP in all armies since WWI: how else could soldiers face the prospect of jumping out of their trenches only to be swiftly mowed down by enemy machine-gun fire, a fate that befell my own grandfather leading his infantry platoon to attack Austrian positions on the Carso front in our 11th battle there in 1917 - fortunately he was only wounded, but would walk with a stick forever after, because they were not able at the time to remove an extra bullet from his knee ::).
Our troops then were given brandy (cognac) or grappa depending on availability, and my father told me of hearing our front-line troops in Libya being scared of Australians because they would attack drunken-mad with whiskey - alcohol not being as lavishly supplied to our defenders 8).

IIRC, in Vietnam alcohol was often replaced with other 'stimulating' substances from personal initiatives ;).

BTW, in the Royal Navy of sailing ships an extra ration of rum was often distributed to sailors before a naval engagement to stimulate their fighting spirit.

I wonder if there is any connection with that and the saying "That girls always get prettier at closing time"   I am guessing the guys also get drunker at closing time

Fruit punch?   Sissy!   Cut it with water, cover up with the palm of your hand so it won't become "cloudy" and warm and call it "horosho poshla!".    8)

Oooops, you are a party animal!!!!

You can include me in the group of sissies.  We mixed it with grape juice and called it Purple Jesus.  Made it with Everclear (190 proof).    The fumes were overpowering.  I can't imagine cutting that with just water.

Was, was a party animal!    8)   I've mellowed down since...   ;D

We always had pure alcohol in our home because my parents worked in IT and they were given it to clean the machinery (remember the size of those PCs and main frames?    :o  ), so some of it obviously found the way into our fridge.   :-[ :D    Usually it was made into home made vodka with lemon twists and water.    One time (it was the summer after 1st year of my college),  my parents and younger sister went on vacation leaving me alone for couple of weeks telling - "no parties!!!".   Needless to say that all my friends flocked to parent-free apartment and we had fun.   But being smart (or at least that's what we thought) we'd take only a 1/3 or so out of bottle with alcohol and dilute it with water like nothing happened.   So, my folks come back, Mom takes those bottles out, pours some booze into a saucer, lights a match - pssssssss....  nothing...   Lesson learned.    :D

As a teenager, in the 4th year at my Tech. high school we had every week a couple of hours of Organic Chemistry Lab which included using a manual polarimeter to determine the polarised light-bending characteristics of organic solutions. After each essay, we'd have to clean anew the polarimeter glass with absolute alcohol (99% of pure ethanol by weight), which of course we sampled occasionally ;D.

WOW :o!!! I still remember its taste, it reminded one of cherries ::).

I drink my bourbon and other whiskeys straight over ice just for it to melt and blend with the water. Quite tasty, quite strong and just limited lingering after effect the next day unless I overwhelmed myself and it got too good  :D

I could never understand the traditional British habit of diluting whiskey or brandy with soda water :-\.

Grappa!!!

Man, I haven't heard that since I was a child.

Every Sunday my grandmother would set the dinner table with ALL the silverware, flatware, and glasses. An aperitiff was served to all and grappa was for us kids.

Surprised to be reading about this drinking of such industrial alcohol by 'still alive' persons.

I was always under belief, from reading of labels, news reports, [thought to be] common knowledge, etc., that drinking it would lead to alcohol poisoning and death.

Once in a while, we hear on news or some such, that a bum or wino  has died from drinking it.

One of the pluses of being pre-med. You learn quickly which alcohols NOT to ingest.

Even the TA at the Organic Chem lab would reiterate the "If you have to drink some of the alcohol here, please make sure it is ETHANOL."

As Dan Patrick says, You cannot stop them. You only hope to contain them.

In our case it was not really drinking, but rather sampling a few drops from the pipette used to clean the polarimeter: that was enough to feel our mouth go up in flames 8).

Why don't you just spend a month in Russia or even longer and meet a genuine person?
And stay away from Ukraine!! Ukraine is not a place for newbies ok there may be a few good women in there  lol ! In general going on any tour or planning any meetings with Ukrainian women is making a rod for your back.  If you do go on some tour in Ukraine you can be sure the women will view you as some sad git to take advantage of, its just the Ukrainian nature . lol

I am just curious how you think someone could have good luck just wondering around Russia?   Are you suggesting going to discos, using agencies, or just striking up conversations in the street?   Having spend probably 6 weeks or more of free time just wondering around Russia in between things I would not suggest this to someone.  So, tell us a little more about what you are suggesting please.

Well, I have never gone on any tour; but I have met with dozens of Ukrainian women.

Was never 'taken advantage of.'

Probably because by 'casting a wide net,' email screening, and not falling for pictures, I eliminated those who had this idea.

I thought I recently saw Mark Davis' Youtube link recently. I watched the video, and simply based on the presentation, it seemed like something you might be interested in.

I found it...here you go..

He cited it's different, although seem like same ol', same old to me.

I have been on four tours.  I would suggest you stay away from Anastasia and AFA tours.  However, if you do take one of those it will be educational.  You will learn first hand about scammers, serial daters and con artists.   Of the tours still operating I would second the vote for Mark Davis's tour.

Why not!!? You would just treat it as though you was in your home city looking for a date. What do you do if your single at home looking for a partner? Well you do exactly the same in Russia 8) It is no different to any other country. Could be a mix of many things I have done it many many times and met some really nice women. Just socialise. A good suggestion sign up to a few sites, even Vkontact a month before spam like hell and you will already have a pile of dates arranged. Many times I was in Moscow for a month spent a few hours a day sending hundreds of "Hellos" to just normal women who had never even thought about meeting a foreigner , I met so many I lost count and have some long time friends from this now. Sign up to some expat sites such as expat.ru meet up with a few expats and hang about with them for a few weeks. If you cannot meet some nice women in 6 weeks, I really do not know what to suggest!!! Other than giving up. I definitely would not suggest striking up conversation in the streets, could make you look a little stupid :P I think 4/6 weeks is plenty of time for any guy to pick up some women and not necessarily a women who was even searching for a foreigner. Why waste years making many trips.
