Bukovel ski resort?
« on: November 07, 2013, 05:21:03 PM »
Wondering if anyone has been there or knows anything about it.

The reviews I have read are mixed. We are not big skiers so the quality of the slopes is not that important.

A woman that I was corresponding with for a while goes there every year - her company shouts all the employees a holiday trip!  From memory it's very enjoyable, and there's plenty of easy walking and climbing available.  I can't remember if there was any snow in the photos, however.

I'll have a look at her emails/photos and update this with more details.

That would be great. We are thinking about going there for 4-5 days between Jan 10th-18th.

Lonedrake,

I'm not a skier either. You might try the vk page for comments: http://vk.com/bukovel

There are photos and videos available there. The main album has only 10 photos but if you'll scroll down the page you'll see a wood cabin with a snow covered roof. Click on that one for 1192 -/+ photos.

The question for me would be what is there for those who don't ski?

I agree. However I skied often as a teenager and would like to go again. They also have some snowmobile rentals which I am interested in.

My wife has never skied and would like to try it. She suggested it...so I am looking into it. I figure it will be only one or two days on the slopes. She is also interested in the spas/hot tubs/romantic getaway.

Many of the reviews said it was overcrowded, loud and overpriced with exceptionally poor service.

I will also be driving a rental car for 8 hours to get there....so that could be an adventure in itself.

Bukovel is known for its mineral waters, and has spas as well.  I think they are open year round, though you may want to check.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Bo, thanks for that info. I'd personally go for that benefit.

I don't know about the Bukovel, but thermal spa resorts that we came across RVing through Europe for couple of months this summer looked pretty scary to me.   But then again, I don't like crowds to start with and half naked crowds especially.    :D

My scariest half naked experience came in winter at a monastery that had mineral springs, or so I thought. Aunt Lyuba and mother were so excited that Mrs M and I were going to spend a weekend sleeping on concrete floors along with other folk. Okay, it's 2 nights. But upon arrival I discovered that men were separated from women, it felt about 50 million degrees below zero, and the spring was cold, not hot as I'd expected.

Call it a case of misunderstood translation. Healing springs is not what I heard, but what Auntie and Mother apparently meant.

Me, a towel, and some other guys all in our skivies and they seemed thrilled about the ice cold water...

Good thing that you were separated from women, I say.   Icy cold water is not the most pleasing environment for men's virtues.   :D

LD, my friend goes there quite often, drives from Sumy when in Ukraine. If you want, I can get you in touch with him and he may be able to answer any questions you may have. I was there a few years back. Pretty cool. 8)

My wife decided that staying at the Bukovel resort is to expensive. We are going to get a room in a private house in a nearby village. She said we can get it for 2-300 grivna a night.

Her BIL is also from that area and he is going to help us find the right place.

We will be leaving Tetiev on the morning of the 12th and leaving the Bukovel area on the 16th.

As a Ukrainian, my advice is: go to Austria, Poland (Zakopane), Slovakia, or Georgia (the country, not the state). None of my skiers friends from Ukraine are skiing in Ukraine. According to them - it's over-over-priced for the quality of service/experience, and the quality of service is poor.
In Slovakia I fell completely in love with Tatry mountains in the place called Strba (Strbske Pleso) - http://www.google.com/search?q=slovakia+strbske+pleso&client=firefox-a&hs=m76&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=BeSCUtvHFKrKsASsj4DICA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1216&bih=638

Or even better - go to Switzerland!

These are summe photos, summers are perfect there: romantic, plenty of hikes, prices we reasonable. But no snow or skiing.

Best skiing in Europe is in the Alps region, northern (France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria) or southern (Italy) side ;).

Don't worry - that much I had already guessed!  She did mention that beautiful mushrooms grow wild there as well, and they picked a lot during their holidays.

Yes, long ago in July 1982 at a summer ski school on the Marmolada glacier - finishing 3rd in the final class competition ;D.

In Slovakia I fell completely in love with Tatry mountains in the place called Strba (Strbske Pleso)....

I was there in late spring 2000 with an ex and a few friends. Beautiful place, beautiful country. The range is just above Poprad and there's a vista point at the top where you can 'see' Poland and Ukraine to the east. I miss that country.
