Kiwibreath,

I believe that the colloquial usage in the US permits the 'compared to' usage as well.

But then, I've seen substantial differences comparing American English, to, say, that of the UK.

Don't worry - it's the same here.  Standards just keep slipping away  :-[  - the one that really gets me, though, is "different than."  :puke:

It seems I missed that class.  ;D

Always willing to learn though.

Proper pronoun to use with "compared" is somewhat in question, even amongst Brit speakers:

My grandmother was the English teacher.  She spent hours with us, but always had a sense of humor about it.  Her favorite line was:

Us ain't got to mind she.  Her ain't the boss of we.

I think one of the posts in your link covers the matter adequately:

Quote
The usual phrase is compare with, which means "to place side by side, noting differences, and similarities between":
Let us compare his goals with his actual accomplishments.

Compare to = to observe or point only to likenesses between:
The psychologist compared this action to Hinckley's assassination attempt.

Garner, Modern American Usage, p. 167

BTW, with/to are prepositions, not pronouns ;).

Sandro,

I'm more of a Strunk and White fan myself.  I wonder how many forum readers will understand that reference?

Leave it to an Attorney to highlight the reference.

Yes, most technical writers will reference Strunk and White any time they have questions about word choice or usage.  I bought both of my kids this book when they were starting high school.  Their English marks were among the highest in their (respective) schools.

I would like to buy this book for some members of this forum (although I doubt that it would be used for anything other than a beer coaster).

From Wikipedia:

The Elements of Style (1918), by William Strunk, Jr. and E. B. White, is a prescriptive American English writing style guide comprising eight "elementary rules of usage", ten "elementary principles of composition", "a few matters of form", a list of forty-nine "words and expressions commonly misused", and a list of fifty-seven "words often misspelled". In 2011, Time magazine listed The Elements of Style as one of the 100 best and most influential books written in English since 1923.[1]

Ooh, that's a great idea...this will be a great little gift for both my eldest son (who will soon be entering high school) and my wife (who is always working to improve her written English). Not to mention my own use...plus it'll save Jone a bit of cash for buying my copy.  ;)

I didn't realise that that particular Time reporter was one of my Irish relatives!

The Strunk and White style manual?
Yes. Upon joining IBM Italy as a Technical Writer (an occupation then unknown to me ::)), I was handed a copy of it, and of another book:

They were first published in 1918 and 1906, respectively :D.
