A powerful piece, I don't understand why more people don't comment on it on this forum.  Maybe everyone is turtle-ling up - abandoning their conscience for cynicism, what do people really believe in anymore?  It's not justice or truth or the American way.  What the blue blazes is it?

Whatever it is I don't want to be part of it.

If you are cold or even lukewarm after watching this, I don't want to know you - because you are the problem - not these people on either side - you are the problem - the indifferent observer who needs to keep his curiosity entertained.

This is a forum about meeting, dating and relationships with FSUW. Not a forum for war mongering and working yourselves up in a lather with rhetoric, sensationalism and hyperbole. Although I'll give you and a few others credit for attempting to change the genre

Might makes right, as Abe Lincoln said. Old Pooty Poot is playing geopolitics à la Karl Haushofer. If the Ukrainians want Crimea badly enough, they'll have to take it back by force. Otherwise, they'll submit to Russia, because total war with Russia over UKRAINE is not in the interest of Washington or Europe. And all indications are that the country is going to be cut in half, with the Dnipro River as the dividing line.

The moral outrage of men on here is endearing (read: comical), but the reality is that this is all just a HUGE inconvenience to chasing tail in Ukraine.  As for concerns for in-laws and family in the eastern areas of Ukraine becoming subject to Russian rule, I would be more concerned of an armed conflict occurring than peaceful secession from western Ukraine. The latter is the best case scenario, unless you pine to see a Chechnyan-style response of Russia to guerrilla warfare....

Russian Federation Travel Alert - Events in Ukraine

LAST UPDATED: MARCH 14, 2014
The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens in Russia to the ongoing tensions in Ukraine and the potential for increased public demonstrations and anti-American actions in Russia in connection with Russian actions in the Crimea.  The Department of State also alerts U.S. citizens in Russia to the heightened military presence and on-going military exercises of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation along the border region with Ukraine.  This Travel Alert expires on June 13, 2014.  The Department of State strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens residing or traveling abroad enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in order to receive pertinent safety and security information.

The U.S. government currently has no information concerning active military conflict inside Russia as a result of regional tensions or of any threat specific to U.S. citizens.  However, all U.S. citizens located in or considering travel to the border region, specifically the regions bordering Ukraine in Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov Oblasts and Krasnodar Krai, should be aware of the potential for escalation of tensions, military clashes (either accidental or intentional), or other violence, and the potential for threats to safety and security.  Media accounts note there has been a sizable Russian military build-up in those regions and there are reports of an increased presence of Russian neo-Nazi and radical nationalist and extremist groups in those regions.

U.S. citizens considering travel to Russia should evaluate their personal security situation in light of current political tensions and the possibility of violence or anti-U.S. actions directed against U.S. citizens or U.S. interests.

The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens should avoid all public demonstrations, whether properly authorized by local officials or not, and avoid any large crowds and public gatherings that lack enhanced security measures.  Demonstrations related to the conflict may appear anywhere throughout Russia, at any time.  These demonstrations may increase the possibility of confrontation and violence.  Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Russia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  STEP enrollment allows you to receive the Department’s safety and security updates, and makes it easier for the nearest U.S. embassy or U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you do not have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution, and read the Country Specific Information for the Russian Federation.  For additional information, refer to the "Traveler's Checklist" on the State Department's website.  Current information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free from within the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).  Follow us on Twitter and on Facebook.

The American Citizen Services Unit of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow assists U.S. citizens in Russia. We can help you with passport issuance and renewal, voter assistance, notarials, and registering a child born abroad. We also provide emergency services for U.S. citizens in case of a disaster or in case of illness, arrest, death or destitution while in Russia.

Appointments are required for all non-emergency services; you can make an appointment by calling the ACS unit at 7 (495) 728-5577, or you may click here to schedule an appointment online.  To contact us with questions, please write to moscowwarden@state.gov or visit the Embassy website.

why must people copy paste entire tomes like this when a simple link to the article would suffice?  Kindly refrain from posting potentially copy written material and/or UNNECESSARILY LARGE posts when a simple link to them would suffice.

Thank you.

Russian Federation Travel Alert - Events in Ukraine

Of course there is relevance. I didn't say there wasn't but, do you doubt anyone is confused about where you, LT or a few others stand on this issue? That issue is not focus of this forum.

You're passionate in your hatred of Putin and his actions. I get that that but, that doesn't warrant high jacking the forum from it's intended purpose for it to play out as your personal soapbox. There are hundreds of political forums to voice your repetitious opinion. I'm not saying the events do not warrant a degree of discussion but certainly not the magnitude you lot have taken it to over the past several weeks

While on the subject, please stop posting and flooding the various threads with your cut and paste text. Doing so causes tech problems with space and storage, it's also redundant. Just post the links to the info you wish to share, your commentary or other pertinent info.

Yeah JayH!  You're a bad man.  You make people read about the news.  The news is stupid.  Only stupid people read the news.

for the record, my gf (so) is from Belarus

Russia transfers nine warplanes to Belarus to ‘counter massing of forces on the border’

Might makes right, but it doesn't make it right.  The Meek will inherit the earth. "If the Ukrainians want Crimea badly enough, they'll have to take it back by force."  And people who want to avoid war are sissies, idiots and Nazis. "Otherwise, they'll submit to Russia, because total war with Russia over UKRAINE is not in the interest of Washington or Europe. And all indications are that the country is going to be cut in half, with the Dnipro River as the dividing line."  How very statesmen of some . . .

The moral equivalence of men on here is disgusting (read: disgusting), but the reality is that this is all just a HUGE inconvenience to chasing tail in Ukraine.  Especially if you love the country you are visiting, love the people, the culture, your in lays, your beloved and have a conscience . . . Because of us in the West aren't grateful for the freedom they enjoy (because of their birth) nor will they do a fig to help others enjoy theirs.  But you stay classy San Diego!

Agree.

Some people are just really dumb and they don't know how dumb they are.  One of my buddies cancels his trip Ukraine scheduled months in advance for March 25th because of the unrest that Putin caused there.  And here we have ding dongs that want to avoid all talk of politics and only want to talk about dating, relationships and let's be honest sex with FSU women.  But how can you do those things with a war going on in Ukraine and visa bans in Russia?

These people may be nice people, smart people - but those sentiments in light of the facts are stupid.

View from the East:

Begins with description of Ukraine military sitting on their butts singing songs...

Ends with "I think this year every Russian patriot MUST go to rest only in the Crimea! No abroad! You are well rested and cheap: warm sea, sun, delicious and natural fruits, plenty of monuments, beautiful nature. This will bring you good income Crimea and its people"

http://www.sovross.ru/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=596314

Just curious if any western patriots here will cancel their planned trips to Russia?

I for one am interested in Jay's posts.  They are informative.  I agree that LT is using the forum as his soap box, but Jay's posts are important to those of us with family in Ukraine.

Perhaps they could limit the Ukraine info to a single thread and then no one would have anything to bitch about.  The opinions are getting a little old.  The day to day status of the threats/war is important to many of us.

100,000 march against Putin in Moscow:

And also in many other cities --decent size marches.  Bravo to the brave Russian people. :clapping:

6.28pm GMT
Reuters says that a demonstration in Moscow on Saturday was Russia’s largest opposition protest in two years, despite police claims that the crowd numbered just 3,000.

The protest, which was held as Moscow also hosted a pro-Kremlin rally, saw people chanting “glory to Ukraine, glory to the heroes” and “Down with Putin”, the agency said.

It quoted Valentina Legonkova, 69, saying: “I am ashamed for Russia and our people. We are behaving towards Ukraine like swine.”

Moscow teacher Irina Seseikina said: “My duty is to show support for the Ukrainian people in its desire to live independently from the dictatorship of the elder brother.”

Don't hope very much. It's Russia, those marches don't affect President's decisions.
