Richard, if I have any inkling of what you need to know the number of pages for, then a straightforward count of pages could well be misleading.

Making a sitemap is better, it does not have to be for YOUR site. I use sitemaps to look at competitor sites.

The reason a straightforward count may not be such a good idea is that many sites generate pages that are essentialy duplicated. Most of mine, for example, generate PDF files and print ready files as well as hundreds of RSS feeds on top of the normal text files that users see and read. Doing a count on my sites would give a figure about three times as large as it should be for your (likely) needs. A sitemap though will tell you what type of pages you are looking at so you can make sensible choices and not appear overly expensive in your quotes.

A straight count can be OK when looking at static, simple, small sites, but you probably don't KNOW that in advance. Sitemapping will always give good information
