I think Putin gets pleasure watching the West throw away their money to improve Ukraine's economy, an economy he will someday inherit. Putin will recuperate all costs to his damaged economy if he agrees to a diplomatic solution. If Obama can give 11.9 billion to Iran to lure them to the negotiation table without even an agreement to settle, Putin knows he can get much more from the West.

Show me the money

We shall see if you are right on that one Billyb.  I would think we would keep our pocketbook closed as it pertains to Russia, although indirectly the money we 'give' probably winds up there anyway.

Putin is not an idiot. Money are thrown either for war or if for economy- then in Ukraine it s a "black whole".
If ever he "inherits" part of Ukraine (won't happen) then he will need to invest a lot to restore the area.
People, just a question- are you ok with Obama giving away tax payers' money for wars?

I'm okay with that. America either spends money for wars or bribe the bad actors of the world to behave properly so money spent overseas is going to happen whether taxpayers like it or not.

The wars in the Middle East and in Afghanistan cost America trillions. A proxy or head on war against Russia may cost trillions. I'm sure the leaders of the West may try to bribe Russia to back off and make Putin the richest man on earth by far. Give him a trillion, end this thing and save lives instead of spending a trillion for war some people would argue. I'm against rewarding bad actors. Iran has been spending hundreds of millions in supporting terrorists groups and now Obama gives them billions with no strings attached. Some of this money will go to killing Americans and our friends. We tried bribing Iran many times. Doesn't work. It's time to let Israel bomb their nuclear facilities. It's a cheaper solution and will save more lives. Because the world won't get tough with Iran, I'm sure they'll get a bomb and someday when they get a crazy fanatic leader running the country, they'll use it or let a terrorist use it. If they're really smart, they'd use it in a way to trick America and Russia into a nuke war.

Bribing Russia to back off Ukraine will be a temporary solution. Russia has a new 5th generation fighter jet, T-50, and top of the line tank, Armata, coming out this year. Putin has invested a lot money in technology and production of military gear. You'd be proud of your military in the coming years. I think he wants to put it to good use. If the West gives him money now, it will make Russia's military stronger so when we have to face them again in the future, our odds of winning will be less and a conflict would be deadlier.

When this crisis began and Russia was posturing their troops on Ukraine's border to test NATO, if NATO responded with amassing massive amounts of troops in Ukraine or Poland, and told Putin they will crush him, I think Putin would've backed off knowing the world was against him. Since Putin learned we play nice, Putin does all the tough talking with threats of major/nuclear war. As we can see, bullies have success with that kind of talk against weaklings.

Andropov was not Jewish.

Chernenko was not Jewish.

Gorbachev was not Jewish.

Yeltsin was not Jewish.

I don't think there is any proof Putin is Jewish, and there are denials that he is.

Medvedev is not Jewish.

Russians are so "non nationalistic" that a non-Russian who is the most nationalist Russian citizen I have encountered (doesn't post here much) once told me my husband is Jewish (he is not).  Elsewhere, a Muscovite poster claimed that the only "criminal" oligarchs in Russia are not Russians, but Jews.  Here, Ludmila claimed I, and my husband, are Jews, and hence "special".  Neither of us is Jewish.  It was claimed as a put down, as an "other".  So please don't tell me stories.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Russia is a multi-national state with over 185 ethnic groups designated as nationalities,

Then I guess the most sensible thing to do is to break up the RF into 185 mini-countries.

I seriously doubt Putin will take a bribe to back off but it is possible if the West offers him a ridiculous amount of money and Ukrainian land. Putin is one of the richest men on earth for various reasons. One reason is because he's capable of taking a bribe so special interest groups can get their way. The West has an interest. Putin has a price that has to be met if he's to allow them to proceed with their interest.

Doll, you should be proud of Putin. Never in his life has he work so hard to build relationships, economically and militarily with nations around the world. While Obama's vision was to make a more peaceful and friendly world, he has actually lost friends and pissed off enemies even more and Russia in the past year created stronger ties with China, India, , Iran, North Korea, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, various nations surrounding Russia and now Egypt according to the below article. This is a huge victory for Putin because Egypt, who has a lot of influence in the region, is extremely important to America in keeping the Middle East stable.

New toys for Egypt's boys to play with

Because of Putin's threats of war and Obama and Europe recently stating they will not send weapons to Ukraine, Poland is now backing off from sending weapons to Ukraine knowing they may be alone in the event of trouble. As Putin talks tougher and makes threats, nations are backing away from helping Ukraine with weapons needed to regain their country. If anybody thinks a diplomatic solution is going to get Putin to give back all his gains, they are living in fantasy land.

Why is Russia allowed to send lethal weapons to Ukraine and everybody else can't because it'll become a dangerous place? Russian weapons are the peaceful non lethal type?
