This is terrible news for the average Ukrainian.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Strange. Normally people are rejoicing the fall of any currency against the mighty USD.

As for the average Ukrainian, they will not notice anything more or less as the average Russian notices the Ruble or the average European notices the Euro.

Untrue if the individuals lives in a city, with no relatives in a village to provide food.

My friend in Kiev doesn't blame the war for Ukraine's financial fortunes.  He blames this on the mismanagement of Yanukovych.  And this is a guy who isn't a Euromaidan guy either.

No the prices will just go up. Benzine (gasoline for us Yanks) already hit 25 to the liter. It was 16 when I was there a couple of weeks ago about the same as the exchange on the dollar.

My MIL said the price of everything went up. Foreigners may not see a huge benefit from the exchange disparity. Our dollar may be almost 3 times stronger than the Hyrvnia but we aren't going to see 3 times the benefit. Desperate times have increased the amount of desperate people. I think the ones celebrating the most are the guys on sex forums thinking they can get more bang for the buck. They see opportunity when misfortune falls on others.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

NO, the price of EVERYTHING did not go up...transportation services went up....what is used more often for ordinary folk, there are no other choices for that.
I SAW huge benefits, what are you talking about....rent price down, exchange went up....am I missing something??? I was constantly asked on the street about selling dollars, this has never happened before, IMO not a rosy picture.  Unhappiness and much talk about wanting a new government.

My MIL is living there and food, clothing and everyday items she needs to live has gone up on her. The economy is bad. Money didn't disappear out of Ukrainian's bank accounts, they just can't buy as much as they could've a year ago.

Tourists will have some benefits and it's always best to vacation in countries where one's currency is pulling away from the locals. It's also logical for tourist activities and rent to stay low or lower in order to lure tourists.

much talk about wanting a new government.

Poroshenko can't get enough help from the West to turn things around. I like him. He's working hard but he doesn't get to make decisions for the West that he is dependent on. Putin is looking more and more successful in getting Ukrainians to believe their pro West government is dysfunctional and inept and making Russia look like the better of two choices.

Success?  He can't get a loan.  Tell us how China is helping out again when trade is down a third.

Strange I do not see JayH keeping track of it. And yes, for me it is a joke that people suddenly care about a currency drop while cheering otherwise.

But neither Greg nor LT cheered the drop of the ruble.

Why pick on the Russians, when we have the Germans:

Quote

Despite sanctions on Russia, German exporters achieved record sales in 2014, inspiring the German Federal Association of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA) to predict another record-breaking result this year, amid "growing risks and trouble spots". . . . .

German exports increased by 3.7% in nominal terms last year, reaching €1,133.6 billion.

 . . .  Germany’s imports grew by 2%, at €916.5 billion

Put that in your Novirossiya pipe and smoke it

Bingo!  It was a big happy joke when talking about the Russian currency going lower...but now it is a somber, morose event when it happens even worse for Ukraine.  Why isn't the rigorous bookkeeper JayH keeping a running tally for us? How is oil doing, or the Ruble?

Russia's economy is in a recession.  Ukraine's is approaching depression levels.

Such should not surprise anyone considering Ukraine's huge increase in the military budget to defend against a superior force, the destruction of property in eastern Ukraine, the treatment of injured soldiers and civilians, the support of refugees from the warzones, the closing of many businesses in the war zones, etc.

Such can bring down a government almost as quickly as a broad military defeat.

The war in Ukraine is costing Ukraine $ 7 million a day.  Ukraine's economic fortunes are due to Yanukovych's management of the economy not the war.

I was 4-square in for an imperfect solution that all sides could live with.  It is not important that I pick sides.

Another cop out.  You are as pro-Putin as they come.  You don't give a damn about Ukraine and it's obvious.
