Defense ministry: Russia training mercenaries in Transnistria and Crimea for hybrid war against Ukraine

Russia is continuing to secretly supply weapons to and train illegal armed groups, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has claimed.

Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of Staff Petro Mekhed said this at a meeting with the rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the PACE Christina Zelenkova, Acting Speaker of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vladyslav Seleznev said at a briefing in Kyiv.

According to Seleznev, "the parties discussed the current situation in the ATO and facts evidencing the presence of the Russian armed forces on the territory of Ukraine."

Mekhed said that "in spite of the systematic violation by the Russian Federation and the illegal armed groups of the Minsk agreement, the Ukrainian leadership is directing all its efforts to end the bloodshed, ensuring a peaceful settlement and preventing a frozen conflict in the Donbas."

"At the same time, the militants cynically and cruelly continue to launch attacks on Ukrainian positions and the civilian population and infrastructure,” he said.

“The Russian Federation remains the single main source of armed conflict in the east of Ukraine."

In addition, "while officially declaring its commitment to ensuring peaceful settlement of the conflict and distancing itself from the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR [militant organizations], the Russian side continues secret arms supplies and training illegal armed groups, including on its own territory," he added.

Also, according to Mekhed, a considerable number of Russian troops are secretly stationed in the territory of Ukraine and are directly involved in hostilities. At the same time, territories of Transnistria and Crimea are used by Russia as platforms for training mercenaries to conduct hybrid war in Ukraine.

Another  plank in Russia's War Against Ukraine. Apart from the obvious invasion of the Crimea and in the east the ongoing terrorist bombings and attempted bombings across Ukraine are all too frequent.

The intent to destabilise at any cost. The aim to prevent the democratic process that Ukrainians fought so hard for ever being a benefit to Ukraine.

What we have seen in the east is exactly what Putin did in Chechnya-- ie-- a scorched earth policy to destroy everything and anyone in the path of the Russian invasion. The aim-to leave nothing of value.

Now we see preparation for a new front-- to tie up Ukrainian resources past the breaking point.

As Mende has repeatedly said( & I agree with him) -- Russia will never leave Ukraine to control it's own destiny.

That is the fundamental point that we must understand-it is not about slicing off sovereign territory to appease Putin-- to him that is simply a tick in a box on the way to his bigger picture aims.

To my great sadness-- Ukraines future is now totally in the balance. Until now the alliances  of political necessity have held together in the collective interest-- with a combining to defeat the greater evil in Russia. Now-- for the first time--it is in danger of fracturing.Dissatisfaction from within the active ranks is now being widely expressed-- and alternatives examined.Unless Ukrainians can stay united now I despair for the nation that has fought so bravely.

Ukraine has been in desperate need of outside help for a year now-- and at no time is that help been needed more than now.The optimism created by holding the lines will evaporate fast--if hope is not created somehow.

The quickest way-- western help on a major scale-- otherwise Ukraine is going to be run over.
