I thought Muzh was not disagreeing with you on that one...but sometimes it is hard to tell.

If so, pardon me Muzh. The written sometimes lends itself to misunderstandings and English is my second Language, so you might be right here FT.

I don't know if Russia is really considering loaning money to Greece, but their presence and the possibility may make the EU bend over more than they otherwise would.

Russia willing to consider loans to Greece

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Russia is willing to consider giving financial aid to Greece, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said Friday ahead of talks between the leaders of the two countries........

Yes It's called Taxes,,,, Which I am fine with paying...

How many percentages, approximatelly, do you pay on an average salary in the US, of say an Income of about 60000 dollars?

When I was younger I hated paying taxes. But as the years went by I found that it is a necessary thing to do in order to fund society. As you know, in Europe we generally pay more taxes on Income than in the US, but those payments goes to cover expenses that in the US must be borne by the individual. Health care, for example. We pay a sum when going to the doctor, maybe 20 dollars. But if we're having a lot of Health issues that stops at about 300 dollars annually. If we drop and needs an ambulance or a chopper to get to the hospital, there's no question of Health Insurance. We only need Health Insurance if we go on vacations outside the Schengen area. So there's also an upside to the higher taxes.

I was just thinking about taxes earlier today as I thought about me having to pay more as my wife just got a job. Married, same household, more Income Equals more taxes due. Must do something about that to avoid getting a tax bill Next year.......

Last year we paid to the federal government around 37% and to the state close to 4% of our income in taxes. That is not including the sales tax (your VAT) and school and property taxes. Also, we pay tax on fuel. So, when you open your eyes, we end up paying closer to 50% of our income.

What? I thought Income tax was something like 15-20% in the US. VAT (here 25%), and property tax is excluded, yes. We have no School tax. 65% tax on fuel here, that's a biggie. 7,5 to 8 dollars a gallon. I don't care, my work is less than a mile away.
Property tax is about 400 dollars for us.

Last year I paid about 24% tax on my Income. I reckon that will be about 30% this year as my wife got a job and Our household Income increases.

You'd be surprised.

Actually, there are many Americans that are very surprised when comparing their taxes to the socialist states of Europe.

Yes, I am surprised. And on top of that you have to tip 15% for services, hehe.

But my country is not socialist per se. It's more a mix between socialist and capitalist but highly regulated!

Muzh, are you sure about the federal taxes being 37% for you?   It would require an EXREMELY high income to hit that level, and virtually no deductions/capital gains.

You must be in the money big-time then....Unless I'm missing a relevant  fact, a total of 37% federal tax would require an income for a married couple of around 1,000,000 OR MORE for 2014-2015, as the 39.6% kicks in for all income after around 450K or so....You retiree's get paid VERY well...

Like I said, maybe there is another factor you are not disclosing (nor are you required to) but getting hit with a 37% federal tax, requires a huge income...easily in the top 1% territory.   Or maybe you paid too much, or maybe you are simply mistaken, and paid a little less in terms of percentage than you thought....   It sounds like you are financially very sound...so congratulations on that, enjoy the freedom money can buy.

FICA tax for 2015 is 15.3% (7.65% + 7.65%) on each employee's first $118,500
of salary and wages

So a married guy making $75K a year which isn't big money would be paying
25%+15.3 = 30.3%

This doesn't include State taxes, so lets assume New York State (but not City)
http://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/current_forms/it/it201i.pdf#page=50

30.3% + 6.45% = 36.75%

That doesn't include money spent on sales taxes etc

Hola Bill!

I'm not sure what Muzh was referring to with his 37% figure, but it would be unusual to be taxed that high a rate on a federal tax return, which is what I was referring to.

There are a few minor things off though regarding your post.  The math error regarding 15+25.....
The 15.3% is not paid by employees as the company pays 7.65% matching employee's contribution.

The tax rates are marginal meaning in your example all money after 75k is taxed at 25% money earned below that amount is taxed at the lower rates...due to this the overall tax rate will be much less than 25% even prior to deductions/exemptions.

Hola FT

Actually you are buying in to the con. The con is that your employer is paying this instead
of yourself and your labors.

Lets say an employer wants a new sales person to sell widgets in a new market. He will
do a cost benefits analysis on how much sales at what profits he needs to justify hiring
a new employee and the total compensation will be part of that analysis.

When an employee is hired an employer looks at the total cost of hiring that employee
not at just the pay that that employee gets to take home. If the employers insurance goes
up $40 per month then that is factored in as well. If that new employee doesn't produce
more value then the total cost of hiring that employee then the employee is never hired
or the employee is hired at a lower salary.

Never get tricked into believing that employers pay for the cost of an employee. The
employee only gets part of what's left over after all the costs are taken into consideration.

Hola Bill!

Well I was only referring to what Muzh had written regarding federal taxes....we all can agree that everybody pays for the employer's taxes through higher prices....after all the employer needs to make a reasonable profit for his work.

Lets say an employer wants a new sales person to sell widgets in a new market. He will
do a cost benefits analysis on how much sales at what profits he needs to justify hiring

We still seem to be coming up short even with the current taxes....every year we run a massive deficit.

I twas browsing about the internet and happened across these two articles:

Merkel, Hollande urge Ukraine leader to give rebels self-rule

Kiev (AFP) - German Chancellor Angel Merkel and French President Francois Hollande took the rare step Friday of pressing Ukraine's Western-backed leader to ensure partial self-rule for the pro-Russian separatist east.

The blunt message from two of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's most important allies marked another sign of European impatience with fighting that still engulfs the ex-Soviet nation five months after the signing of a broad truce......

http://news.yahoo.com/ukraine-leader-warns-terror-threat-peaceful-cities-181025031.html;_ylt=AwrXnCWWcqBVb3YAFQXQtDMD;_ylu=X3oDMTByb2lvbXVuBGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--
Germany and France seem to want Ukraine to essentially cede the territory.

India, Pakistan to join China, Russia in security group

UFA, Russia (Reuters) - India and Pakistan began accession to a regional security group led by China and Russia on Friday after two days of summits which President Vladimir Putin held up as evidence Moscow is not isolated in the world.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, meeting in the Russian city of Ufa a day after the BRICS emerging economies held a summit there, said the invitation to the two Asian nations showed a "multi-polar" world was now emerging.....

http://news.yahoo.com/india-pakistan-join-china-russia-security-group-165745162.html;_ylt=AwrTHRt3cqBVgWYANgNXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyY3VraDZuBGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDQjA0OTNfMQRzZWMDc2M-

All in all, the stock market went up nicely today, but there is a growing alignment of countries now that seem to be putting themselves in position to challenge Western dominance...perhaps not today, but someday and perhaps someday soon.  Perhaps we have thrown around 'sanctions' or the threat of sanctions(to countries that disobey current sanctioned country's) too often now.

And regarding tax rates:

One must be careful to distinguish between average tax rate paid and marginal tax rates.

Just because someone pays a tax rate of 37 or 39.5 percent on the last few dollars of taxable income doesn't give a tax rate of 37 or 39.5 % paid.

But, our tax code is unfair . . . and unfair to those at the top.

The main unfairness is that a large percent of Americans pay zero income taxes . . . yet still having full voting rights to elect those who will continue this unfair situation.

There can be zillions of examples; but I know of one that points out the silliness of our system, which is probably even more evident in the socialist countries.

This situation involves two brothers that my family knows.

The one brother worked his way through college, worked his butt off all his life and built quite a nest egg for himself and his family . . . so he thought.

The other brother never held a full time job very long, drew unemployment for as many months as he could, then worked a little while longer, etc.  He enjoyed life to the fullest, went to all the races, every weekend at lake, etc., while his brother was slaving away at the books or at work, etc.

Now in retirement years, the hard working brother is still paying fairly hefty taxes on his retirement income and has about $500 extra (above and beyond the standard)  deducted as a 'success tax' from his SS check for medicare because his income is 'excessive.'

The lazy brother has better insurance through Medicaid, gets food stamps, gets rebates of negative income taxes and is in much better health because he never worked hard or worried about much.  And his kids love him much more than the successful man's kids do because he spent more quality time with them.

A great incentive system we have in USA which is getting worse every year.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.
