Yup, Bill.

For a native Russian, excellent English.  Many of the posters here don't know the difference between the contraction of You Are (you're) and Your.

Welcome to the Forum, Anna.  I, too, am from Los Angeles.

jone has a point ..

I cannot stand the lazy way some people write in 'English' - A wise English as a second language speaker should run a mile on seeing such scribes...

Moby...  I think some members have much bigger issues than the occasional misuse of "you're" and "your'...   They would be lucky if that was their only 'problem'...  For example...  people that act like they are experts on everything...  The ego on those people would prove to be detrimental to any relationship...

And they have even more fun with their, there, and there's  . . . since there are 3 to choose from.

Many seem to randomly chose which to use, sometimes being inconsistent within the same sentence.

Usage of see, saw, seen and even "see'ed" really grate on me.

'See' is a typically Germanic verb - called stark Verb (strong verb) in German - changing through apophony (ablaut) in the root syllable as opposed to a schwach Verb (weak verb) that adds a suffix like -en at the end, or -ed in English.

'Strong verbs' are actually the most commonly used, a curse to non-Germanic speakers that learn English because of their 'irregularity' :(.

People turning them into 'regular' verbs are either poorly schooled, or following the ongoing general trend towards 'simplifying' the language as more convenient, for instance in SMSs.

The two that annoy me are:

1. "I seen him" when it should be "I saw him".

2. "Would of" when it should be "would have".

Ah yes, I was thinking there was another; but couldn't come up with it at the time.  So their, there, they're, there's 4 to choose from.  Just use on a random basis.

Well, my post was meant as a compliment - that started this whole thing off.  I thought Anna had great grammar skills.

But that is not to say that I don't love the cute way Eastern European women phrase things, some times.  That, and their cute little accents make me a devoted fan.

As I mentioned before, I cannot hear Ochka's accent . . . unless she is talking with someone else.  Strange.

But since I don't get the benefit of hearing it; I am thinking of suggesting that she take some training to nearly eliminate it.  Actors do it all the time . . . the elimination thing.

The advantage in doing so for Ochka would be to minimize any student complaints about her accent.  She has had very few complaints . . . but I suspect some of the administrators are holding it against her (thinking it might not be good for students); hence their reluctance to give her more of a permanent job.

I think it is a mistaken past tense of see. It's not correct. It should be "saw".

Yes please don't ever attempt to use it. It is a bad play on words with usage usually only by the uneducated and ignorant.

Welcome to RWD btw  :welcome:

Hi! My name is Anna. I live in Siberia, in Novosibirsk. I joined this forum to participate in cross-cultural discussion, practice English, make new friends and probably more, who knows... :)

Welcome Anna! I might be making a trip to your city in the next month or two to visit a special lady. I really want to go visit your opera and ballet theatre, I read it is among the best in your country and I looked up the performances. They look amazing! I'm hoping "Sparticus" is still being performed when I get there!
