BillyB, you definitely need to make that tank street legal. That way you can push all the Humvees off to the side with the monster!  ;D

What I really want to know is where can I pick up one of these Soviet trucks? Ya think I can get this thing to pass a crash test and become street legal?

BillyB

With gas prices the way they are, you'd have to be a millionaire just to drive that thing to the supermarket!!

I look at that truck as an investment. It has serious negotiating power. The supermarket would rather deliver the groceries to me for free than have me park that turck in their lot. They wouldn't want any of that Uranium 238 near their food. What are they worried about? I'm the one that sits under the warhead while driving.

Lada's can be driven in Panama.  I've seen them.  The standards aren't quite strict as of yet.

The first time I met my finace's mother and nephew, I took them all to dinner.  I hope her mother was joking but she was talking to me about getting her daughter a car.  After I said I would get her a Lada they were shaking their heads saying "No not that one!".  We got a good laugh out of it.

You get in via the roof, imagine your RW doing that.

Ste - I have a pal in Stalybridge who has one of those!  :D He has an Ufa and a couple of other bizarre ex eastern army things also including a Tank!

I used to buy old Ladas, transport them up to Hull (UK NE Shipping town) and there were companies there who would buy them for shipping back to Russia for spare parts. It was big business in England up to about 2002 when the last ones broke down and were exported back.

Ladas (old ones) really are as dire as they look, there is still the odd Riva/Niva in the UK, a few Samaras also. Lada pulled out of the UK in the late 90's, a friend of mine owned the last Lada dealership in Manchester. They struggled on till about 99 with warranty work and then went over to another brand!

I have fancied importing an old Volga, there are many knocking around in mainland Europe.

The new ladas look like something Japanese, maybe a Toyota? Maybe they bought the tooling?

And lets not overlook Moscovitch cars either! - You still see those in Russia!

Unless you can get one in under Old Timer rules, I would forget taking one to the US, as JB said, breathe for 20 mins in Russia and you will know why!

Nadia's dad has a Lada Sputnik, looks a bit like the old shape (dead old shape) Audi 80 - perhaps it is. Her bro had a company Lada 110 - quite modern, not at all bad, with 'Efes' on the doors, guess who he worked for...

I remember a Tank/Army place in manchester off toward trafford park, dunno if it's still there.

And i've seen a Chaika around about's, looks like a fifties Packard when it's a seventies russ-mobile. In fact I think it was a Packard, stolen plans, blah, blah.

Reminds me of the only good thing ever to come out of an Anglo-French alliance, the Concorde, wot a plane, jb feel free to join in the back-slapping despite the French. The Russian's got spies to nick the plans, which they did, except they didn't nick all of them, some important bit of the fuselage missing. They built their Tupolev Tu144 (Russian plane models are wonderfully consistent) and we called it Concordski, cos it was strangley a clone.

And it crashed. At the Paris Air show, around 1975, although there is some scandal about that, google, google...

Concorde however, was blemish free, apart from one tragedy, allegedly caused by a bit of metal falling off a freighter version of the DC10, or was it a DC9......

Now guys, i want all of you to tell your Russian wives/girlfriends/partners/penfriends etc this:

'You know darling, you russian's totally copied the Corncorde by stealing the plans and even then, your version was crap and crashed.'

Let me know what they say......

I know what she will say...............

Russia Invented Concorde, as they did electricity, telephones and anything else you care to name!  ;D

Russia invented everything and us dodgy westerners merely stole them and claimed the credit  ::)

And it is no coincidence that the Gaz van (yellow Russian minibuses) look very much like a UK Ford Transit!

And I never got to ride Concorde, as I was about to book it, the damn thing crashed in Paris and they were shortly after took out of service! - There is one at Manchester Airport you can hire for wedding receptions, I looked into it, it is £5500 for basic hire!  :o (Thats $10000 to the rest of you)

I had toyed with the idea a long time ago to ask Elen some questions such as who invented the automobile, radio, TV, the steam engine, the reaper, the telephone, the radio, pasteurization, polio vaccine etc.  I thought it would be nice to know the true answer instead of all this western propaganda we have all be fed.   ::) ;D :D :noidea: :brightidea: :toocool: :yech:  (we will see if the smileys work)

The Russians copied the B-29 bomber and Space Shuttle too. It's a question of what was it that they did not copy?

Ya know after living here for a while I have come to understand that the credit for being first with a given invention has a lot more to do with who got to the patent office first rather than who actually developed the first working model

All these years I thought it was Marconi that invented radio.  Nope, it was Popov.  I've been to the museum and seen the patent.

It was actually Popov that made me think of that question.  I was aware that Marconi was really not the first.  I have a gut feeling though that Russia's list of who invented what might be a lot different than ours and the truth probably lies somewhere in between but leaning more to our history.

To discuss such topic you should get an idea what effect fundamental investigations made by Russian scientists ( lets say those at least which could be proved withe Nobel prize - although that prize depended on politic as well and Soviet Union was not "loved" by the west but anyway)  had on what you counted like things created at the West
I have not idea how far you could be with your cars if there were not Russian scientists with  artificial caoutchouc or what you could make at all  without electric welding for example created by Russians too.
You may be proud with creating internet but  where would you be with your internet- cell phones- CD roms and all other electronic industry without Alferov's works  ( Nobel prize in 2000 )

So auguring could be endless and would demand rather wide knowledge in many sciences. Truth tell I'm not such competent here as well as you I guess

So better I tell you old Russian anecdote in Russian because of its end  ;D
Let translate it yourself

Significant Russian intellectual contributions are not limited to the area of technology.

Here is Dr. Yuri Valeninovic Knosoroff, Leningrad Institute of Etnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, "the man, who, against all odds, has made possible the modern decipherment of Maya hierogliphic writing" (quote from page 10 of Michael D. Coe's Breaking the Maya Code, Penguin, 1992, one of the most stimulating books I ever read).

As you can see, Maya studies are a VERY serious field of inquiry ;).

What I could translate was cute and had a lot of truth in it.  I had trouble with the last line unforuantely.  I think whatever it was was funny.

Actully we don't claim Edison invented the radio.  I think we credit Edison with the phonograph, movies, the light bulb and many other things.  I belive we incorrectly credit Marconi with the radio but school was a long time ago.

I think though that history is a bit distorted for all of us and much like what you quoted.

That Maya code must have been a real challenge.  He does look awful serious.  Musta had an American wife.

Thanks for the correction.  Yes, I got what the French invented.  Sounds like the French.  In the real world I can't think of much except perhaps they invented rudeness.  Yes, You are right about Popov.   I wonder if our history books have been corrected.

Yes, Bruno, Elen's was an Anticdote, mine was a joke.  Interesting though when you dig into this stuff and find for example how many people really invented the light bulb.

Yes, that was the same thing I found when I said it was interesting how many people really invented the lightbulb.   The link Bruno, had showed another in France.  There was also a link for a guy in France who invented the heavier than air ship (plane) 25 years before the Wright Bros.  Of course the best he could do with it was build a model with a clock to run the propeller.  They just couldn't get past the weight of a steam engine to make a man sized plane.  Humm, steam engines might be back in our future.  wonder how many miles you get to a gallon of coal or logs.
