I suppose old guys married to young Russian wives will never be too brainless to eat home made mushrooms:D:D:D (It's traditional female's tool to get rid of old husbands in Russia:P)

Not unique to Russia, but I can not handle pigs feet. On the whole, as a lifelong carnivore, I prefer my meat not to reveal the exact location of its origin, so likewise, pigs heads, tongue, unless sliced and jellied (yummy) or in chunks in stew.

Borscht always tastes too much of soil for my taste, but I have learned to accept its presence as a food ingredient.

Caviare, of all kinds is something I try to avoid.

I haven't run up on any Russian foods I don't eat.  I eat Russian style cooking everyday and I'm none the worse for wear so far.

I'm still trying to figure out Andrew's avoidance of caviar,  to me there's nothing better than blinie and caviar, washed down with champagne,,, truly, God food....

On the other hand, I don't think I could handle salo, but that's Ukrainian.  By the same token, when I lived in Germany I had a tough time choking down goose grease, and sopping up the fat from smoked eels.

One of the things that has become evident to me during my travels, is that our, that is, "American", definition of what is edible is really quite narrow.  When I think of beef, I'm pretty much thinking steak or roast.  In other cultures they eat everything, in some form or another. Very little of the animal goes to waste.

Can't eat fish/seafood due to allergies, but I have tasted everything else while visiting Russia.

First trip was fairly mild.

Second trip I got beef tongue and the wife didn't tell me until I was chewing on my second peice.... got a little queasy, but ate all on my plate.

Third visit, I was slightly sick but could hear my father-in-law discussing certza, and I knew I was about to eat beef heart.  Didn't eat much as I wasn't very hungry, but it was very tender and tasted just like roast beef.

Fourth visit, don't remember the name, but I understand it is popular.  Looked like pulled pork in some kind of gel.  Saw Pop scrape the fat off the top.  With good hot mustard on it, I liked the taste, but the texture was difficult for me.

The 4th trip also introduced me to a nice quantity of samogan.....    No, won't ever black list Pop's Liquid Gold!  Have to get his recipe!!! :D

This will help you single Moscow ladies on this forum when you meet your future American husbands:

Now, all Americans have different eating preferences, but some of them may be fairly similar to mine.  Do not laugh too hard!!!   The first thing I say when I order anything is no mayonaise, sour cream or heavy cream (some deserts).  I usually get served with either none where I am pleasantly suprised or a little where I do not mind and either eat it or physically remove some of it and eat it anyway.  I put up with alot of the slathered cheese on top of alot of dishes.  It is not a Russian thing - just a Bruce trying to protect his heart a little bit thing.  Salad dressing is a show stopper ie. I just leave the salad over - somehow it just grosses me out!  At home I eat for the most part Russian / Continental, with my modifications that my wife has learned to live with and her family prepares themselves for when I am there.

For all it is worth, My "Ethnic" Food Order of Prevalence when I dine out:

Continental, Japanese, Greek, Georgian, French, Italian, Southwest USA style Barbecue, Korean, Russian, German, Spanish, Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican.

Now, I have found all types of food in Russia with the "Georgian" cooking style of food that I like best in the South and the North-western part of Russia with the mayonaise / cheese / sour creme (is cmetan sour creme? - I was never sure, I just know I do not like the idea of too much of that stuff in my vessels) etc. laden heart attack on a plate.

My favorite in Russia - Siberian Pellmeni, along with alot of the soups, fresh black bread and Altai cheese.

They all are delicious. In fact, mix them all together and put them on just about anything. :D

Ha, Ha - I leave the cardiac cocktail dressing for you short timers!!!  Elen - please do not try to kill your American boyfriends with sour cream, mayonaise, salad dressings or heavy cream.  No Russian salads for them, you know - the bowel of mayonaise with a little bit of greens in it - let them live to celebrate your future happiness.

Believe me Elen, American men who travel to Russia who will end up with a wife are not eating at American fast food restaurants unless they have no choice.  When in American fast food restaurants they are making healthier choices.  Needless to say, you'll virtually never see me in a McDonald's except for one thing - their lowfat icecream - a good deal I suggest you try!

Well Elen, if you do not like the taste then you are lucky - no need for you to go to McDonald's at all; but I warn you, the french fries do taste really good and are a good value for the ruble.  Wxman - yes there are better icecreams / frozen yogurts in the world then McDonald's; but if you actually like the taste McDonald's is a great value.
