Thanks for all the tips.  I shall be both honest and discreet, and if I can't be honest for whatever reason than I shall be Very Discreet. 

I should probably know this but who is Pavel that TurboGuy is referring to?

Pavel is an interpreter and guide based in Kiev who can help you in many respects. He has a good reputation and his rates are quite low.
