Budget for 3-4 month stay in Kiev
« on: November 29, 2020, 05:51:14 PM »
What kind of budget are we looking at?

I'd like to get a 1 bedroom apartment, eat out 4-5 times per week. Get a gym membership, have internet, cell phone. Uber around 2-3 times per week, take mass transportation. Take a few trips to the Black Sea, Lviv and other natural wonders of Ukraine.

I'd like to take time off from work, refresh and find someone extraordinary so hopefully wine and dine up to 10 people during that time. Maybe one or two trips to Italy, France with someone special. I'm hoping I can be able to do 3-4 months - 6 months if possible. I might make some vlogs about my stay and travels.

I'm making plans for June 2021.

Figure $1,000 a month if you live frugally and don't travel.

With the restaurant, Uber and travel you mention, plan on at least $12,000 for 3 months.

WHaaaat ?

4k US a month ? You can live like a king in UA for that ..

The first Q that needs to be addressed is .. Are you talking about living in Kyiv and visiting the Black Sea  or living near the Black Sea (say, Odesa) ..they are nearly 500 Km ( c. 300 miles ) apart

Taxi apps like Uber / Uklon abound and the metro is hardly expensive, if you live on the routes.

If you eat out ( frugally ) as you put it .. you can eat out every for every meal  for  less than 20 bucks a day

I chose O'Briens Irish Bar / Restaurant's menu

yeah that's a good figure and pretty much my expectations.

With the expertise of this group I thought I'd have some breakdowns or even an excel sheet of expenses and ways to save.

I can't imagine eating out every meal. I'll definitely be bloated.

Ideally I'd be staying in Kiev and taking a trip to the Black Sea and Odessa.

Now let's get those vaccines rolling out!

Ask ML when he was last in Ukraine..4k is WAY over the top for a frugal chap entertaining one lady and not eating out every night, even taking into accounts trips to Odesa.

If you are buying 'presents', THEN the figure might be more accurate.

Nothing wrong with what ML posted.  Better to go with a high number and not use it all than to budget low and end up not having enough.

I was in oddsa for a month, now I am elsewhere. My apartment is 400 dollars a month , sushi is around 15 to order a big platter . Restaurants you will spend around 20 to 30 a day . It ain't expensive. But then again, depends on what you want to buy , there is luxury that costs a lot , and luxury that costs a little . I can do well with 1000 total a month to spend .

Same question to you, then when were you last in Ukraine ?

De-luxe 1 bed apartments can be had for westerners for less than $30 / day, in the centre

Locals would get it for much less

My $12,000 wasn't for 3 months of staying in Kyiv.

He said:  Maybe one or two trips to Italy, France with someone special.

He didn't say it would only be one woman . . . up to 10 or so.

If I were to go practically anywhere (outside developing countries) planning to stay for 3 months, entertaining up to 10 women, taking some to Italy or France . . . I would certainly have at least $12,000 on standby.

To be fair, I do think having on the ground experience does give one a better idea of cost.

If I were alone in Kyiv, I would stay somewhere downtown.  My Kyianin relatives, who live in what is now a "central" desired neighbourhood (about 15 minutes to downtown by tram) say it is unsafe to walk outside at night.  This was unheard of, even after the collapse.  I assume it's different in the very centre of Kyiv, as there will be more people in the streets.

Of course it does. I've been to Ukraine 5 times and spent 28 days in Kiev.
I don't use my trips as a reason to disqualify the comments of others.

Budget for:
  • 50USD/night for accommodation.
  • 40USD/day for food and entertainment - this assumes plenty of dates at restaurants, etc.
  • 10USD/day for local travel (on average)
Add a buffer for a good time or side trips, then 4000/month is a reasonable budget. One can get by on much less but you'd want to live comfortably.

???

Did you not see that the OP is asking for a 1 bed place ... I linked a site aimed at westerners with smart accommodation for less than $30 / day in the centre ..   Big bath for two 'n all

A local could get this for far less

$4k a month is a good budget to have. Take more if you have it.

You want to enjoy your time, go out and socialise. Youre not going out to simply survive and get by, by the sounds of it. If you only end up spending half of it, then fair enough. Its been a while since I was in Ukraine but its fair to say that dating & travelling costs money. It might be reasonably cheap but its a continuous spend.

I also seem to remember that the prices in Ukraine were either really cheap or quite expensive, if you went to the good places. Oysters & french wine at a nice restaurant wont come cheap. Pub fare and walking everywhere will be decent value.

If I go somewhere I tend to explore and try stuff out, again that costs money. If you just want a 1 bedroom apartment and cook pasta at home every night then of course itll be cheap. It depends on who you are and what you want from your trip.

Once again you are nit picking and ignoring the entirety of the OP's question.

A local could get it for less? Do they go on vacations entertaining large groups
and while on vacation make romantic side trips to France and Italy? No they
don't so your argument is irrelevant. Nobody over the age of 25 goes on trips
abroad with the plan of couch surfing and fighting retirees over every kopeck.

$50 usd is way to much unless you are talking about hotel. That $1500 a month.
To rent an apt on monthly basis is fairly inexpensive and to rent for 3 months you can get a very good deal.

It's always a good plan to have a nice reserve in case something happens,
a quarantine, a slip and fall, breaking a leg, you could fall in love and decide
to visit the Babushka and Dedushka in Siberia to get their blessings. You can
decide that you really, really want to see what she looks like in a bikini frolicking
on the beach in _______________ (name of place with beach here).

Having a generous reserve makes sleep happen faster when your head hits
the pillow.
