Profiles

And NO, I am not talking about womens profiles on agency sites, I am talking about member profiles right here on RWD.
Today I had to check someones profle because I couldn't tell if I would be addressing a man or a woman when I addressed the poster. Needless to say his/her alias gives no clue & when I checked the profile well, that didn't change anything. I decided to check a few others, just on spec & honestly I am somewhat disappointed at the fact that very few members take the time or don't wish to fill out the basic profile.
I mean its not as though I want your full name, address, phone # & Zip Code. I just would appreciate some basic info so when I dcide to respond to a post, I have an idea of how to respond based on your country of origin, your sex & the language you are most adept at understanding.
It always intrigues me how little information people wish to share about themselves in situations like this but still want to be accepted into the club. Would you allow somwbody into your house without knowing some pretty basic & pertanent information about them? ???
To me this is very like you are keeping secrets about things that are really no secret at all, (either that or your just too damn lazy to fill in the info, in which case speaks volumes about your personality) or your trying to hide behind a shroud & keep us in the dark.
I don't know about you but I am proud of who I am & what I do & have accomplished. I have no qualms about puting it out there for everybody to read & learn from.
All I'm asking for is some basic information that would be in your basic profile here so I can get an idea of who I am dealing with. Personally I think that certain basic info should be required before you are even permitted to sign up. So do us all a favour & go to your prfile & take two minutes of your less than valueable time & fill in your profile, I for one ould be very grateful. ;D

Totally agree with your comments and I have no problem been open about myself and showing my face.

I joined this board not to sell any service to anybody and sure enough somebody will accuse you for fishing for clients with your comments BUT they don't have to disclose their direct e-mail if they don't want to!

As you said it will be a little helpful to know, his/her sex, location, nationality and age so we can answer correctly with out making many guesses and inaccurate assumptions.

I think this board is a community, virtual but still a community of likely minded people with a common interest and hiding some basic details it shows no respect to other members.

On the other hand only people with no confidence of themselves hide their face!

What it the expression in Russian RV?

Noisto. (Who cares what you look like!)

I thought that at first as well but then I also thought that that being the case I don't need their email to do any phishing & our company does not phish anyway so it became irrelevant. Not only that but I think that should I do that & somebody complained to Dan about it, I would deffinitely get my peepee slapped pretty hard! :'(
I am first & foremost a member of this 'community', the fact that I own a couple of buisnesses related to the forum is secondary in my mind. If it were first, I'd be on every message board out there related to RW, which I am not. I am a member on several but I haven't posted on any others in the past 6 months I think, or pretty close.
I come & hang out at RWD mostly because there are anumber of guys here I have interacted with for years & who I consider almost family - AJ, Ken C, jb, Phil d'Amour, Bruce, Catzandmouse, Shadow, Sterlitz, AndrewFI, Jack & several others. All guys I have come to know over the past several years & some who I have met in the flesh & others who's wives I have met, but not them & still others whom I helped find their ladies. All of them are my extended family & like a family I guess I kinda like hanging out where they are.
I feel if someone wants to be a part of that family then there should be no basic secrets between us. Does that sound reasonable? I don't want any private info, I just would like to know the basics that are listed in the profile section. The rest I don't care about, I just think everybody should put their pin in the map & fly a flag so we know where you are from & at least admit if your male or female & give us guys that are doling out the info a little bit of something to work from & with.

Richard,

I find nothing strange about your desire to know who you are dealing with here, I often think the same.  I have even made mistakes in the past assuming basic things, like sex, or age.  That is why I very often wait to respond to a new member until he/she has posted several times so that I can get a feel for who or what they are.  A case in point was the recent experience we had with the troll, "Russophile".

But, hey~! It's the internet.   Everyone gets to be whatever he/she wants to be around here.

Well I am certainly glad I am not alone in this line of thinking. It has bothered me for some time but I hesitated posting about it. It just came to light in a big way when I read arecent post & it made me shake my head.
When I considered responding I thought I better check to see if this poster is male or female before I respond. I could deffinitely tell English was not his/her mother tongue but by the screen name I always assumed it was a he, but one line in that post made me think, mmmm, maybe not. So I checked his/her profile & nothing. That discouraged me from making post that may of been of some help to this person, but not knowing if I was dealing with a man or a woman I didn't want to insult the poster.
I realise most people wish  remain anonymous & I can respect that. However, there is certain vital information that everybody who wants to post here should be open with. We are not asking to intrude in anybodies lives or personal affairs.

Just my 2 cents why I want to remain anonymous and I guess my concerns are the same for other members:

- More and more company are "googling" names before hiring contractors. I don't want my private life to be exposed on the net directly. If someone wants to find out who am I, I guess it can be done it in less than 5 minutes.
- There are some people I know closely who will not understand why I'm looking for someone abroad and I want to avoid discussions with them.

So for these reasons, I will always leave a profile not complete.

Don't be sad Maxx, I could have listed a whole lot more but the bandwidth might hve downed the board. Pretty much all the oldtimers are included on that list & yes you are on it. Sorry  didn't put you & many others on it but like I said, didn't want to crash the board, LOL.
Lots of guys who are on it no longer post & some don't post on this board, unfortunately.

Richard,

I agree......just some very basic information about each member would be helpful. I think part of the problem is not "anonymity".........but rather "protecting ones identity" in this day of rampant "identity theft". When I go to my profile section and see "birthdate".....it did give me "pause" for a minute. Just "age" would have been better. Yes....the birtdate feature allows your age to automatically be updated on some websites....but it just is'nt necessary. I think everyone has a minute or two to update their profile.....anually.

I ***LIVE*** for the day when you address a longshoremen as a *she*! :D Taunt that longshoremen, tell him to meet you at the Pushkin statue in Tver to settle the slight man-to-man... and tell him your REAL NAME in Russian is Yaro-Fahret!

GO FOR IT, bubba!   Great post from the Canadian Cowboy.
