But, I must remind you that we also do not know how gravity works.

Those of us who at least finished high school understand how gravity works. We also fully understand the Earth's magnetic field.  A few classes in atomic theory will help you with the basics.  I'll bet you don't fully understand why the seasons change every 3 months either.  There are very few unexplained phenomenons in this world, but you will have to take a few physics classes, post HS, to get to those things we cannot explain.

For instance, one thing we do not fully understand is why portland cement gets hard when mixed with water.  We know it happens, but we cannot prove why.  OK?

I love debunking old wives tales, myths, and superstitions.  Astrology falls into that classification.  If you are one who relies on zodiac birth signs to pick a mate, then you will probably fail everytime.  You need to get a grip and prepare to invest more of yourself into building a relationship and worry less about finding a quick, easy, and painless way to find a wife.

There ain't no such thing as "magic", get past that.

It is not "magic", it is "chimistry" :

To a chemist, love is found only within the confines of a stable reaction, not at the whims of a beautiful girl with blond hair in Russia. I was in the laboratory at the university, deconstructing my DNA only to put it back together again, but as I saw her sifting down the hall, mopping the floors like an angel, she broke my heart, and I could not put it back together as easily as the DNA.

And I scribbled in on the back of a lab report, handed it to her. She eyed me suspiciously, pushed the mop aside and opened it. It read:

"If you were an element, then you would be carbon, because that is my favorite. Because you are a non-metal, gaseous at room temperature, a poor conductor of electricity and yet, this is how you should always be. You're not like those other metals, all shining and malleable, like butter, as if with enough heat and pressure, I could turn you into something else completely. You're stalwart, neither here nor there, and unbending, even in different states. And you will never, never be a transition metal.

While noble, you are no noble gas. Because you do not have the valence shell capacity for it. You can never be filled, eight electrons is impossible for you, because you've always been one to give rather than receive, and your chemical reactions are splendors, not impeded by the octet rule you hold.

What you can do with oxygen astounds me, how you alone breathe life to the world, can heal the wounds that nature cannot fix. Without you, fossil fuels are futile, fatty acids are farcical and isotope versions of you are left for dreamers to deduce.

You are so versatile. Unlike the others, you have the uncanny ability to bond with yourself. But more importantly, unlike the others, perhaps you can also bond with me. And I promise you that we could be stronger than diamonds, more compromising than graphite, our covalent bonds unbreakable."

She did not speak English, and stared at me as if I were crazy. I ushered her into the lab, mixed chemicals.

"See? When you mix these, in equal parts…when you mix them together…look at the result…the…" I say, a madman, fumbling in the laboratory anxiously, hands shaking, reaching for beakers, throwing in the chemicals, mixing, waiting.

A glowing blue liquid envelops in the beaker, and I turn off the light and show it to her against the dark backdrop. "So beautiful together. We can be this," I say, tapping the beaker.

She stares at me, then smiles, and I reach for her hand and she takes it,a miracle.

Together, we walk down the sterile stairs to the beach, the reaction between us occurring spontaneously.

First meeting, a chimical reaction by BJ Hollars :D:P:D

Wrong. I read a lot about Quantum Physics and the forces that
work on the atomic level, and the quest for a unified field theory.
There are formulas for the effects that gravity has, like the speed
and acceleration of a dropping ball, etc. How, exactly gravity works
is still very theoretical.

Compatibility is important. As a first cut to the problem, astrological sign compatibility points you in the right direction.

Hi

JB,

___________________________________________________________________
Saying you believe any of that crap automatically sends you to the nut house brigade in my estimation. There is no "scientific" basic for that old superstition.
___________________________________________________________________

You seem to have a closed mind. Thus, reading an article about an insurance company study of 160,000 accident claims by star sign will not sway you at all. Yet many people reading the article will know in advance which is the worst driving star sign. I did. 160,000 is a much larger sample, maybe 100 times, than tests used by drug companies to test, convince the FDA, then market what may still be dangerous drugs. For example, the "scientific" testers for Prozac sneakily first eliminated all people who got better using a placebo. Thus the Prozac success rates were then much higher than a truly scientific study would have shown. Are you sure you are actually being scientific about star signs, or are you just being prejudiced?

The ancient Greeks had many ideas, such as the existence of the atom, the four personality types, the earth being round and going round the Sun. They also refined and believed in Astrology. Isaac Newton was also a believer. Somehow those ancient Greeks could see things, which still remain hidden to many people. Scientists are first of all human beings with particularly sensitive feelings, and they almost never want to risk humiliation in front of their peers. Thus there is always a (constantly changing) consensus for things such as how the Universe was created, whether the earth is flat or round, and a scientific pooh poohing of astrology or other unexplained things, such as psychic phenomena or superstitions. Scientists are often inflexible, rigid minded and guilty of groupthink, just like a CC meeting of frightened grovellers with Stalin in the chair.

For myself, I do not believe in astrological predictions. However, from knowing several people close to me very well, I have found that they all tend to match the strongest characteristics of their star sign, without exception. This applies to people from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. (I used to think like you do, that the characteristics were related to seasons only).

My UW shares my sun sign, which for us is good, but is bad for some other star signs. I would suggest that the star sign is one of several areas that are a guide to compatibility. Like some other guy posted, I have found I get along with females of some star signs, and badly with others. This never influenced my decision to meet any woman, either in the west or in Ukraine. The results of those meetings, and second meetings if any, confirmed a genuine link between star signs and compatibility. My scientific compatibility experiment is an ongoing one, and a very pleasant one, though limited to my fiancé of course. So I am actually someone who violently disbelieved in astrology just like you do, but have been swayed by the evidence of my eyes. However, I always uncomfortably knew I fitted my own star sign perfectly, whether I believed in it or not. In your heart of hearts, JB, have a read about your own star sign and you may be alarmed to find you are an exact fit. My intuition is that you already know it, and you don't like it. All star signs have some positive and negative features. I see star signs as a guide to personality, not a rule. Here is the story about the study of 160,000 motor vehicle accidents.

Spartan... your link about car accident is BS...

"Capricorns take a back seat
People born under the star sign, Capricorn, are the nation's worst drivers. According to claim statistics from car insurer AAMI, drivers born between December 22 and January 19 have the most prangs.
- The Herald Sun, 17 June 2003
"

"The figures are completely bogus. We showed the Suncorp Metway numbers to Mathematics Professor Stephen Clarke, who told us

The main problem from a statistical point of view is that this takes no account of the number of customers in the zodiac groups with policies.
- Prof. Stephen Clarke, School of Mathematical Sciences, Swinbourne University

My wife says I have a mind like a steel trap.  Listen, I don't care if you believe that tripe or not, I don't care if you read the Bible, and get whatever crutch you need from that. Do what ever you need to do to get through your day.

Just don't try to defend the astrology nut bag of tricks here, OK?  There's just no science to it.
