Are they really so different??
« on: October 30, 2006, 05:14:27 PM »
From the Starting Out section, William said:  "I have talked to my first Russian GF-she is here in the US- and she ponders whether RW/AM couples will ever work."

We have several members here with long term marriages to FSU women.  Yet, the statistics seem to say these are the exceptions.

So is this Russian GF really on to something, or just idle talk?

Myself, I don't really understand the problems she and others allude to.

True, I am not married, but I have spent several months with several FSU women living 24/7 with them.  I really do not encounter any big differences between these women and AW.  Cultural differences seem rather small to me and nothing has arisen that was not cured through a discussion or two.

All of the problems I encountered were just the same type of problems that come up between AM and AW.

Yes, I can understand they 'will never work' if we end up primarily with gals who are using a marriage just to get to USA.  But absent that scenario, I am not quite clear why these AM/RW matchups 'will never work.'

From the standpoint of an onlooker....and a son who grins all the time, and a grandson, who just submitted an application to MIT... ( standing is 8 out of 5oo in his class).

Who has simply blown me away with his abilities....and is sixteen years old. His English is now flawless, and he is a top debater in the High school circut! missed one question on the Math-Science SAT's......

In the genes? Maybe....

A great attitude? Certainly  :)

And a darn proud family!   :)

His mom is also a lady with the ability to adapt to her community...and helped start a Math competition team in the Middle school. She has tutored him in Russian studies, so he retains his native understanding.

Both are Americans now.. with a Russian flavor~

And those that don't love us,May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,May He turn their ankles,
So we will know them by their limping.

God put your arm about my shoulder... and your hand over my MOUTH!

I think the number one problem that my former girlfriend referenced are found in many of the men that go over to court them.

She also found that the men that came to see her and others would-

Promise the woman anything but never deliver on the promises. Or deliver half of the loaf. Example- talking about the big house but living in a trailer park.

Paint a picture of the marriage that isnt even close to the reality.

She found a tendency of American men to take extreme positions on family issues and try to negotiate something less.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

I saw a movie over there- The Tears of a Russian Woman. Anybody see that one?
