Blizzard of '66 snowdrifts 10 feet high. And I was elected to go to the corner to buy sodas. My friends and I drew straws and i was the loser. Walking in a blizzard is a unique experience. School was closed for a week.

They never heard of snow plows?

Sure, they have a couple of them, it just takes some time to plow a couple hundred miles of Interstate.

I've been in some of the most desolate and empty places in this world, but I think Kansas has topped them all.

Living in Kansas City, I've driven out west only a few times, both of them to Colorado Springs, and the only thing comparable for me to Western Kansas for boring was Western Texas out near Lubbock. Not a place I could live, way too flat, and it goes on for-everrrrrrrr. At least in Eastern Kansas we have more trees and it greens up a bit more.

Chuckles,

This T/R is not serious.  I'm alone, stuck here, and bored out of my skull.  The only good news is that I will make enough money in two months to buy 100 pairs of those shoes Gator wears.

However, this is prolly the most desolate country I've ever seen.  I used to say the longest 6 years of my life was one winter I spent in Sidney, MT.  I think I'm going to revise that.

How much is that in WalMart shoes?  Must be something like converting Rubles to Yen.   :D

Here in Vermont, home of Norman Rockwell and classic images of Christmas, it's currently 42 degrees and sunny.   ;D

Here in Wisconsin it's sunny and +2C with a high of +7C today. Haven't had any snow on the ground for almost a month now. Hoping for some tonight though. Would be nice to have a dusting for Christmas.

LOL, I might actually be from Kansas but I'm not so daft to think it was serious. However some of us here have passed through the area you're enjoying right now... :-)  Think I'll pass, KC is better.  Glad you're making the buckets of cash though!

Now, Now, It's not so bad... jb is just getting a winter welcome....

Our Irena has missed winter... again. Everytime she goes back to Russia in the winter ... we get snow and she misses it.

jb and crew will be working tomarrow however....they decided to make up for lost days last week..

Goodland, just happens to be home for me and my honey...

In the late summer the miles of sunflowers in bloom is breath taking, all facing east! There is also alot of feed grains grown here also.

I am told, at one time this little burg was about 11,000... Tnen the Interstate went round and today the population is barely 5,000.

I moved here 1 year and a half ago, and haven't found any stinkers yet! There are a few that have offered to introduce me to a few however!

I do hope that the weather will clear and the group working with jb can get their work done and enjoy home fires for the remainder of the winter.

Dick and Basil plan to fly out of DIA for Ekaterinburg tomarrow.

My best to all and a Happy New Year.

Thank you ,Momma D, for the kind invitation for Christmas at your house, I hope everyone has a joyful Christmas holiday.  This Christmas season had been marred for us by the recent passing of my wife's mother and the fact that Etna is still in Moscow.  She has some things to do regarding cleaning up the aftermath and settling up the estate.   She'll be back home on the 8th, so we won't even have a "Russian Christmas".

As Momma D mentioned, we have a coupla "snow" days to make up for, so today is a work day here.  The party manager and I have a plan to break the guys from the field about 1:00 PM, and bring them in to the LZ for a celebration.  This crew is from south Texas, (mostly Mexican)  and in true Texas form, we are going to have a BBQ.  I went to the local food store yesterday and cleaned out the meat section.  We will also have corn-on-the-cob, ranch style beans, and as a special treat I even have some Mexican pickled cactus, which is a traditional Mexican Christmas dish, pies and some cake.

I wonder what the locals will think to see a bunch of crazy Texans BBQ'ing in the snow...

Merry Christmas to all of our extended family at RWD~!!!

I'm a week late in hopping into this fine thread, but not to late to wish you a Merry Christmas, jb and everyone! Now, about those white vehicles....  are we speaking "Frac"? Long ago I was in the cementing/acidizing division of Halliburton's competitor, The Western Co of North America - I bet jb's aware of who Eddie Chiles was. Anyway, my first assignment was to "Frac" train up in western Wyoming, but the project folded. I never got a shot at that facet again as I went offshore from - of all places - Corpus Christi, out to a reef called ?the Coral Garden?......We had, I believe Schlumberger
(commonly mispronounced among uninitiated Yankees) set off those
expolsives downhole (perforating) and afterwards, I'd plug the hole
with my monster rig, then pressure test it. ANYWAY,,,,,

A very peaceful holiday be you in Kansas, NY, St Pete, Tashkent,
or Down Under! I spent Christmas Eve up in the mountains around Asheville with my daughter - it was breathtaking. Today we're staying inside with a hard cold rain spoiling the day....

No, those "white trucks", are not Frac pumps.  I ran Frac jobs for Haliburton in the Rio Grande valley for several years, but this is the exploration, "up stream", side of the business where we will do the sub-topographical mapping, locating likely drill sites.  There are a couple of production zones here in Kansas and a typical well will be a "stripper", but at today's prices, even a 10 barrel a day well is worth finding.

Merry Christmas.

I like to think that I, and my merry little band of cut-throats, are doing our part to make American less dependant on foreign oil.  Every little bit helps.

Merry Christmas to you and your band of  merry men. I know you prefer to be some place else, me too. But may you make the best of it. And a BBQ in a snow storm will bring you funny memories for years to come. Take pics!!

Ummm... buy a smaller car?

I'll admit that when petrol prices hit their high a few months back I questioned my last choice of car because we're all sucking up oil like it's water (Water is getting scarce here too....)

I love my "Bella" but I think when it's time to change her over I'll be getting something more fuel efficient.  :(

For anyone who hasn't guessed, this is why I'm in Kansas.  This is a 768 channel seismic record.  While it may not look like much, this stuff is pure gold.  Black gold, that it.
