Tell me about it!

My fare cost me a little over $2,800 inc. taxes to depart Oz on the 20th January.

If I wanted to get on an earlier flight it was as much as $8,500. I assume that was business class though.  Because of my frequent flyer status points I rarely ever take a long flight without a free upgrade so I'm counting on getting bumped up for this trip... I HOPE!

I'm already thinking I should be booking my June trip because I assume it'll be tough to get flight!

You haven't been paying attention.

Book your flights through a Russian Travel Service, there are several of them with offices here in the USA.  I have a list of agents at home, unfortunatey I'm on my laptop a long, long way from hom.  Someone here should be able to give you some advice though.  After Jan 7th, you should be able to book a flight with no more than one stop, (next day arrval), if you live in a major city ,,,and, depending on where, you are flying from, prolly less than $1,000 R/T.   Kiev isn't that hard to get to.

Kuna,

Buddy, sorry, but I don't have a travel tip for you from down under.

El Rock,

If you live in the US.........Google the following:

1) GLAVS Travel (located in New York). Russian owned travel service. Cheap tickets.

2) Russia House (Georgia and Florida)

I found two tickets for my Mother inlaw and wife's neice, who stayed for a month with us from Russia.........in July......only three weeks in advance.....from travelocity.com for $1,860
for the pair of RT tickets.

I always do my searches with a departure and return on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Less business flyers to compete with. But just in case I finish out by trying all possible combinations (even weekend......you never know for sure).

All my flights were Areoflot which was the cheapest company several years ago (no longer even close now). Czech Air seems to be one of the cheapest in the last two years.......but tickets go quick from the consolidators.

Buy the ticket in Ukraine.

We bought tickets from Kiev to the US for $970.00 last week.  It's Ariosvit to JFK and then Delta to our connecting city.

Not bad at all.

Last bought rt tickets for my wife and her daughter leaving 12/25 and returning 1/20 for $950 each through expedia.com.

Leaving from Kansas City, Chicago, Amsterdam, Kiev, 18 hours gate to gate

Just did a quick check, you can leave on 12/31 on NWA, 15 hour flight for $880.

Kuna,

Aya makes a good point.  It is usually less expensive for RT flights that originate in Ukraine.

Besides, Australia seems to make it fairly possible for FSUW to visit on a tourist visa (vs. impossible to the USA).  Maybe your June trip should be to meet down under so she can see your country.  Of course there is the winter-summer switch to consider.

I use nwa.com (Northwest airlines) I plugged in the date of leaving US on Jan 8th from MSP to Kiev and the cost is $944 with tax.

I was talking about the embassy in Moscow, so Moscow flights, not Ukraine. And i wouldn't be so sure that it is much easier to get australian visa. I'd say the chances are about the same as for american visa.

I personally know a 30-yo Moscow woman who received a tourist visa initiated by her boyfriend.  She owns an apartment and her child did not accompany her (no business however).  27-hours to arrive in Australia after the plane departed Moscow.

thats the key. owns an apartment. How many other women do you know who own an apartment? With current Moscow prices of 100k+ for 1 room apartment, it isnt as easy as we'd like it to be.
Also a child staying in Russia helps. Not everyone has a child either :)

Humm, there is a thread somewhere about businesses to start in Russia.  How about "rent a child" so you can get a visa?

Gator,

I'd be great to have a holiday in oz with the girl I finally click with but I'm not sure how easy the Visa would be to get.  I've never tried and I don't know anyone who's tried but if you read the info on the Aust Dept. of Immigration web site it seems that almost ANYONE can get a visa.  Not so sure it'd be so simple.

I guess for the low cost of a visa it's worth giving it a punt one day though.

Hi Kuna,

Your suspicions are correct. Don't be fooled by what you read on the Australian Immigration website, you could be in for a very nasty shock especially if you want to bring in someone for a FSU country.

As you say it's not so simple as it reads, so always do you homework when applying for any visa through Australian Immigration as it can avoid a heap of hassle later believe me. Reasons for a FSU lady to return home always have a big bearing on Australian Immigrations decision for tourist visas.

Cheers

I see it's your first post downunder...  welcome!  Why don't you go to the Introductions section and tell us more about yourself.  Would be nice to have someone other than our English friends to chat about a 5-0 result in the Ashes series!
