Social Security card
« on: January 29, 2007, 04:17:29 PM »
After reading in horror of Bruce's green card nightmare, I shouldn't be surprised.

Today, my fiancee went to our local SS office to apply for her SS card. The clerk informed her that her birthdate as entered into the system was 11/29 while on her passport it says 9/29 (her passport is correct). They handed her a form letter that reads, in part:

Dear XXX:

This is to show you that you requested a SS card on 1/29/07. We cannot issue you a SS card until we check the document(s) you gave us to show your citizenship or alien status. We will check the document(s) with the agency that issued them. This will take about 12 weeks.

If that agency tells us that their records... do not agree with yours, we will let you know, in writing, that we cannot issue you a card.

WTF? Her visa expires on March 15, we were planning to get married the weekend of Feb. 10. Before I call the office tomorrow, has anyone here dealt with this BS before?

Go forward with all of your plans and follow the passport data. The absence of a ss# should have no effect on your situation.

They will fix it sooner or later. Sounds Like a typo when the data was entered by DHS.

If your state of residence has issues about SS#- marry in Vegas

Welcome, groov, to our former private hell. My wife arrived in November 2002,and never got her SS# until April of 2004. All because of a clerk's error, and also due to our 90 day
marriage deadline (K-1) - after the I Do's we had to wait for EAD. I went around the bush with these SSA people seven or eight times. The only positive experience was walking in there, finally, with her first Green Card - that opened to door to her SS# and a standing offer of legal employment. I hope your experience proves better than ours.

Little typo's and errors can make one pull his/her hair out.

groov,

Better this than they screw up the GC like they did for us with Sergei. This you can quickly fix with the GC. And remember, this is our government. If they did it right the first time everytime they would end up making a profit because they would be so efficient. If they make a profit they would owe us money and we just can't have that now can we?

Keep the faith it will be okay.

thanks, guys.

I feel better now; misery loves company, eh?  ;D

Polina has her EAD, we went through JFK and they stamped the back of her I-94 "Authorized to work 12/20/06." Not that she's planning to work anytime soon, but it would have been nice to have the SS card in the works around the time we marry.

We're headed to Vegas the weekend of Feb. 9., come Hell or high water we're going to get married there.

Groove, do not worry.  SS is much more efficient than the BCINS.  Hopefully, luck will be with you and you'll never have to set foot in 26 Federal Plaza.  I suspect you'll be fine.  We came when "they" were reorganizing the BCINS.  Now girls automatically seem to get the 2 year AOS soon after marriage.  The ones like myself, who came in before are the ones that got lost in the shuffle..................perhaps never to come out.
