Ronnie  :D

I just have posted some facts from her biographical information  :)

BTW she told in one of her interviews that she did not know Ukrainian language till 1990.

Kuchma never learned it.  If Yulia didn't learn Ukrianian until after Ukraine was freed from Russian domination, is that her fault?  She was pretty young in 1990.  My wife is one of many Ukrainians who is very anti-Russia, politically, due to Moscow's unwillingness to keep hands off Ukrainian affairs and other historical reasons.  She was required to be educated in Russian by the Soviets so her Ukrainian language skill is also poor.

As I said, Tymoshenko has earned her stripes.  I give her credit.

History of Russian language in Ukraine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language_in_Ukraine

Ronnie,

USSR was multinational country and as a multinational country had one State language.  :)

Some of my relatives during the Soviet time were living in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Their children along with Russian language knew the national language (also history and literature as well)  of republic  where they were living, because a national language was the second language in  the Soviet schools of Soviet republics.

My neighbors during the Soviet time were Ukrainian family and a family from Kazakhstan. They migrated to Russian republic in 1982 and in 1986. Their children also perfectly knew the national languages.  :)

The politicians very often use nationalism as a "productive" method. Anti-nations... yes, politicians rely on the main mass... (for example the UNA-UNSO) Unfortunately, intelligent people, who don't buy the nationalistic games of politicians, are not the main mass especially in the countries of FSU including Russia ...

***NOTICE I should stay out of things that I don't have anything to do with.***
***NOTICE I should stay out of things that I don't have anything to do with.***

But just because I should mind my own business does that mean that I will?
Nope

......in Foreign Affairs latest publication: on the subject of Russia:

WmGO
In your earlier post you say "on the subject of Russia" when the subject is actually about Ukraine, and even more likely you were quoting Foreign Affair who was making the mistake.

Mockingbird was jumping the thought process, that if Timoshenko was news from Russia then Condi Rice should be in the News of Mexico. She jumped a few hurdles of connecting thought to say that Condi Rice should be called Mexican.

I think that was her point.

Now I likely got both WmGO and Mockingbird wrong and will get shot at from both sides,

Take care,

Bill

Ronnie,

USSR was multinational country and as a multinational country had one State language.  :)

Now I know the Latvians, Poles, Germans had to learn German, but I didn't think that in Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, etc., the national language was Russian ?

Was Ukrainian taught in schools as a second language of Ukraine .. ?!

BTW - I was just searching for a photo of Yulia with dark hair ...

I could not think about Tymoshenko as a woman, just dirty politician.

You may well be right, as she has a murky past, but she is probably the most popular politician in "the" Ukraine - even many "Russian" Ukrainian women like her in Kiev/ Kyiv.

Mark, that countries, that you have listed, were not the republics of USSR  :)

Was Ukrainian taught in schools as a second language of Ukraine .. ?!

There were Russian language schools (some of them were exempt from obligatory Ukrainian language) , Ukrainian schools and mixed schools (where pupils even could study Hungarian and Moldavian and other languages)

The Constitution of USSR 1977 (article 45) in Russian http://www.hist.msu.ru/ER/Etext/cnst1977.htm#7
