Thank you very much guys. Yes the next days will be very difficult, especialy for Rena who is in the village to sort out everything, and to help to organize the funureal. I asked her if she wanted me to come with her, but she said njet. She said that she would be very busy and that she would only worry for me if I where in the village......

Thor, I am not one to say how one should act.....My honest opinion...your wife may act strong now....but, I think that you need to be with her 'Now' as a friend to support her ;)

Hi Wayne,

Yes I can see your point ::). But I know my wife and she would only worry for me if I where in the vilage with her now. I spoke with her 5 min ago and then she was on her way to the priest...Yes I could be with her in the village, but since my Russian is not good I cant see what I could do to help beside be with her....I also belive that Rena needs to be alone with her mum in this sad days....and i can see that I could be a strange element among all the neighbours and friends visiting them in the village.....I cant really see what I could do there Wayne. But i call her several times today to support her as best I could...

Tuesday 17 July,

I woke up around 9 and Rena was allready up and making ready to go to the Village. I noticed that she was crying when I came up and I hold her close to me to comfort her.....

Soon after this she left to the village. Richard called me and I went to the gymclub to do some training there. Richard was allready there when I came there. We did our stuff for about 1 hour and after this I left home. I took a bath and then Chris called me and asked me to come to cafe Alion. So I did and soon Rich and Richard joined us to. We sat at Alion for almost 3 hour's, and then kristyna (Rich fiancee came). She told him that she needed to go to market Barbashoa to buy some stuff to her son. Rich asked me if I and Chris could join then and so we did. I old Kristyna that the marked closed at 3 o clock, but she said that it closed at 4..... ;). Guess who knows Kharkov.....When we came there at 3 o clock it was starting to close...But Krystyna found some shoes to her son and on our way home she also found some sunglasses she liked very much ;).

We took the Metro back to the center of Kharkov and went to Madarina for dinner. After this I went home to relax. I try ed to call my wife several times but she was busy with organizing the funeral in the village and could not speak with me...

In the evening Chris, Rich/Kristyna, me, Chris W/Olya went to a great restaurant in Sumskaya name Metropolitan. There we had diner and we had a a quiet evening talking and so on. The chief at the club was a young Ukrainian boy that had a split citizenship Ukr/Canadian and he lived in Montreal in Canada where he was a student. He spoke fluent English and did everything he could to make our evening perfect.

After this we went home.

Wednesday 18 July,

Soon only 1 week left in my beloved Kharkov :(. Oh boy have I enjoyed my stay here this summer!! As usual so did I woke up around 10, and I went to Slava to talk with him. After this I went to Alion and meet Rich there. We went further away bu bus to Sumskaya. There we went of (we took the wrong bus... ;), so we had to walk down Sumskaya, but that was OK in the hot summer weather in Kharkov. Our plan was to get to the bookmarket in Sovjetskaya. This a outdoor market with books, war relics and so on. We looked at some books and Rich found some cool old Sovjetunion pins in the market. He found 2 pins of the Apollo expedition the Russian and USA had in 1975, very cool!!! There are a LOT of pins from the Soviet time in this market, A LOT!!!!!! :). They seemed to be authentic too.

I know one of the sellers at this market, he use to have some German war relics from ww2. This time he had a fork and a helmet. He don't speak English at all, but had a kind of conversatin when we asked for the price for the helmet. He asked for 20 Dollars, a very good price since I saw a helmet like this for 400 grynas at a marked earlier this spring. But we went on and looked several books and pins. Rich was very interested in this helmet and we decided to have a new look at this helmet. But of course when we came to this guy so where there a new guy looking at the helmet. Waited for almost 15 minuets to see if he would buy this helmet, but in the end he went away without the helmet. Then we went to this guy and try ed to bargain price. In the end he said 19 Dollars and Rich bougth the helmet :). He we called Slava to help us to speak with this guy and he told us that if we came back tomorrow so could he bring more German stuff. When I gave him my phone so did he see the photo of my wife and the phone and he smiled and said "zhenna DA?" I said yes, I was here with my wife last July and he remembered Rena :), very funny.

After this we went to Schevchenko park and meet Richard and Nastya and Chris and Charles who arrived from UK today :). We had some icecrem and then we went home. This is Richards last day in Kharkov before he goes home to Minnesota, but he will be back next spring again!!

When I came home Slava called me and asked if I wanted to buy some shoes. He knew that I was looking for new shoes. We went to 23 of August street in the beautiful evening weather, but I found now shoes I really liked. I also bougth a new card for my Mobil phone since my card was empty. When I was sitting on a bench at 23 of August street a very emotional moment happend. I called my wife and we spoke about todays funeral. He she was in deep mourning and almost was crying when we spoke in the phone. I felt so sorry for her but then she suddenly said with the sweetest voice "When I come home on Friday I will bring you fresh apples, vegetables and honey from the village". At this moment of sorrow and tears she actually tougth of me. I could not have found a better wife, Rena is everything for me and I miss her like crazy!!! Her character is special and I could never find a girl like her at home. NEVER!! We talked for some time and I send greetings to her mum and friends in the village.

In the evening I meet with my friends Rich/Kristyna, Chris/Luly and Charles at Metropol.

The days seems to fly away here in Kharkov. I walk the streets here and keep thinking that soon I will be on my way home, but my heart will stay in this cool and funny city. If I stay away from Kharkov to long I get abstinence and want to go back fast. When you really like a place like I like Kharkov it hurts to leave.

Funny story. I told my wife that I hopped that I could win some money in the lottery so we could stay in Kharkov all the time. Then she locked at me and said: " I will pray to God every evening that you will never win in the lottery" ;)

On Saturday evening will my friend from Norway come to Kharkov. His last stay here where in November last year when he was best man in my wedding. He has been to Kharkov 3 or 4 times before and no he is like a kid since he is so looking forward to be back again :).

BUT, there is a but. I have try ed to help him several times when he is here in Kharkov. He is always here to meet girls, but he will never go to blind dates, never want to meet girls on his own, can never see that a girl is a gold digger...., and when I try to help him he always tells me that he has dated several girls back home and I don't need to give him any advises at all. he knows best, BUT the girls always cheat him, always!!!

Like several other guys so don't he understand the dating game here in Ukraine. It is very different to what he is used to back home. the girls here have a different mentality, and there are some very important things he should now when he dates girls here. As I said before so it is not hard to find average girls, not hard at all, but to find the beautiful girls is really hard work. This girls are often spoiled, more spoiled than beautiful girls back home. They are almost like princesses :). Many Ukrainian men wants this girls, and the competition is hard. When I see that men in 40 and 50:s think that they can find one this girls, and also don't want to spend any cash to get them, I just shake my head. This girls are just to that Ukr men take them to expensive restaurants and buys them gifts. It is hard to competite with that, and many men should be more realistic and date less beautiful girls. The thing is that my friend has some money (he is not very rich, but he has a good income). BUT he don't want to spend to much on the girls, but want a very beautiful girl...The culture here is to show that you are rich and top spend money on this girls. I have so many times try ed to tell guys this, but they will never listen and keep comming back time after time.....with no success when it comes to the beautiful girls (da da some of you will say that the most important is that the girl is beautiful in your eyes). But to the men that wants the beautiful girls, it is a hard game and you need to prepere well and study the culture here.

Today i guy try ed to tell me storeys about how Ukraine is. How the girls act and so on. I told him that he was totally wrong. Funny enough so where a Ukr girls with us and she supported me 100%. Her father is working for the police, and the girl told us that he has some (black income :). This is usual in Ukraine when you are in the police. A huge part of the economy in Ukraine is black, she believed the black economy to be over 70%.....AND she told us (as I have said earlier on this board :), that money can solve all problems here in Ukraine. If you have problems with the police you pay, if you need to get to a better hospital, or want to come up front in a line in the hospital, you pay. This is Ukraine and the culture. Money talks.

I hope that my friend will be successfully this time, but I am not shure. As some of you said here earlier, the guys who comes here and believe that no one can learn then anything about this dating game in FSU, will not succeed at all here...

Hi Thor

Great pictures!  Thanks for sharing, looks like a fun time was had by all.

Thanks for the insight into the mindset of a beautiful Kharkov girl, and what a man can expect when he attempts to court her.

When you speak of a beautiful girl are these the top 1%, model quality women, or just a woman who most men would find attractive.

In other words, what is YOUR definition of beautiful? :)

PS.  Sorry about your wife's loss...I lost my last two living grandparents last year, so I know what it is like.  Twenty years ago today we celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, so today would have marked their 70th had they made it.

I am sorry that you lost your grandparents last year. I lost 3 grandparents in 8 months back in 96-97 and I was veri cloose to them so I know how this is like.

My definition on a beautiful girl are the 8, 9 and 10 girls. 8 are girl most men find beautiful, 9 are very beautiful girls and 10 are the last 1% you can see at exspensive restaurangs.
