Health Insurance
« on: July 01, 2007, 06:13:53 PM »
Not that I won't insure her anyways, but is health insurance required by the US for my fiancee coming over on a fiancee visa?  If yes, does it have to be shown to immigration on arrival into the US? Or does my signature on the Affidavit of Support meet that requirement? I've researched archived threads about health insurance for my fiancee for the period when she departs Ukraine and we get married in the US. She will be taken care of by my employer health plan once we are married. There was really only one option mentioned from a while back. Does anybody have current feedback or recommendations on purchasing short-term health insurance for that 90 day period to get married in the US? Thanks!

No on the insurance requirement on the arrival of an alien fiancee.

There are a few providers out there for aliens on arrival while waiting for the other insurance options. I used to recommend an outfit in Arizona but damned if I can find her card.

Thanks, William. If you happen to find that card or hear of any others, please let me know. Also, thanks for being such a team player on this board and sharing your expertise. I may not always share your personal views on some of the threads here, but I sure respect you as a person and your professional insights/prospectives. Rich

A quick search with Google will turn up a few companies. I purchased 2 months coverage for N.---it was right at $300. I think the company name was Seven Corners---or something close to that.
I was seriously debating spending the money, but I am glad I did--she was going up stairs with wet feet when she slipped a few weeks ago--we spent a fun Sunday afternoon in the ER

It's funny how you read some threads in here that seem unimportant at the time but then later you find it was a gem of information.

RK,

After reading your original question I started my new job and found out the Exec team could salary sacrifice Private Health Insurance "with benefits" (i.e. subsidised by the company - not a typical inclusion in Oz).

I took it up and covered myself AND My Girl so she'll be past the waiting period for services like optometry and dental by the time she arrives.

Now I've read that you've used your ladies health insurance I feel much better about the decision I've made.

(Our health system in Oz is MUCH different to the US but still private health insurance makes REALLY good sense, especially for high income earners - and if the company pays 50% AND I can salary sacrifice the rest it's really a "no brainer")

 :offtopic:

And that is exactly WHY a lot of us OMB's hang around here! You can be years into your relationship and something comes up that gives you the "Where the heck did that come from!?!" but reading here, and I may be a wacko but I read every post of every thread here, can give you great insight on what caused it or what may be coming down the road.

Another great time to say:

Dan,

Thank you very much for giving us this sandbox to play in!
