jet,  Actually she was able to handle and check out the cosmetics in Ukraine, the same as in the US, so this wasn't new to her.

Interesting to note, since in my wife's town in Russia, the cosmetics counters look like American liquor stores in the bad part of town. Everything is behind the glass and if you want to "shop" you better be buying something before you leave. The sales girls crack the seals on everything when you purchase it, and as a consequence, things like mascara and nail polish tend to dry up faster unless you start using them immediately.

Most things are kept behind the counters or under glass, but there are samples available for you to try on your own.  Or else you can ask to see an item and they will open it for you, let you try it on yourself or on a sampling paper.  Really not a whole lot different than many cosmetics stores in the US.
