Librarians & Dormitories
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:56:01 AM »
I came across the profile of a divorced 32-y.o. FSUW from Troitsk, Ukraine (?) including this information:

Occupation: Librarian
Live in: Room in a dormitory
Income: Stable small income
Education: Bachelor's Degree

Now librarian is probably a mis-translation for some accounting job, picked up from a Russian-English dictionary which may also have offered the obsolete book-keeper as an alternative.

I was wondering about the Live in: Room in a dormitory. Dormitories are usually communal (2 or more per room) accomodations for students or the destitute. Here we have also some "pensionati", usually managed by nuns and heavily supervised (curfew, no male visitors, etc.), for girls studying or working away from home.

Is this a similar FSU institution ?

It used to be a home with minimal comfort, typically used for students or people who came to work or study from other locations, and don't have any other place to live in their new location of work or study.

My guess would be that this woman may work as an university librarian, and lives in the dormitory that belongs to that university.

Thanks Lily, I know what a librarian does, but I have often seen the term used for non-educational jobs, hence my assumption.

I wonder if Troitsk (?) even HAS a university, I never heard the place mentioned before. Anyway, if it does have it, a visit to its library and the assistance of its resident librarian would be worth considering ;D.

Lily, your obshezhI'tie, rather than obSHCHezhI'tie, transliteration reminded me of something else I discussed recently with a FSUW. Is true that nowadays Щ is most usually pronounced as Ш, presumably for euphonic reasons ?

Theoretically in FSU countries they still have librarys on some state enterprises, factories,  etc. Such enterprises and factories have dormitories for employees. So many people who  moved form rural area to big cities  work on such enterprises and live in dormitories, because they did not find a good job and can not afford even a lease. But in my opinion this profile is 99% scam.  Attractive lady 32 years old, no home, no money, so soon she willl tell you that she need some financial support. :-\

We have a childrens' library next to our apartment building in Ukraine.  It's stand alone city library not linked to any factory or university. The librarian is an older woman who actually lives in a small room in the library.  It may be that this woman has something similar or shares an apartment/room with several other women.  This arrangement is typical for students or young women just starting out.

DS Girl, I'm not contact with this "Librarian", so I doubt I'll ever receive requests for financial support from her ;).

I had some difficulty in finding a Troitsk (Troickoje, Троицкое) in Ukraine: it looks like a VERY minor town (pop. about 5,000) some 100 Km north of Odessa on the Tiligul river, and its only known scammer so far is 28-29 y.o. Yulia Pesotskaya (who, as you can see, presents herself in a rather different style).

Therefore, I coulnd't really say if the "Librarian" is indeed a scammer, or not ::).

  obSHCHezhI'tie

Sandro, your spelling is perfectly correct. Sorry I was not very accurate writing it. Librarian is deemed to be a non-educational job in Russia. I also agree with downsouth girl that libraries and librarians are not only at universities but also at other institutions.

Scott gave an example of a librarian living right at the room in the library. That would be a good option as many people in FSU prefer living as close to their workplace as possible. Not a lot pf people have such luxury though. If I could ever think of applying for a job in a library, say in my eighthies  ;), I'd be glad to live in a tiny cozy room nearby.. :) thanks for an idea  :)

Such girls can write anything , invent any occupation they can possibly have , but it will be hard to believe it, librarians, sweeper in the kindergarden, guard in the book store and so on , but meanwhile they will attach pictures of some numerous models from different magazines, not widely well known ones, so that guys could easily be confused .....

Sandro, here's one more foto of the librarian. Unless I'm mistaken, she appears
on a few scam sites with photos of several different model-like faces. Trouble
is, I saw no solid evidence that she scammed anyone, out of money at least. One
guy complains about wasted time. IMO, that could just be the wail of a sore loser.

I was wondering about the Live in: Room in a dormitory. Dormitories are usually communal (2 or more per room) accomodations for students or the destitute.

I used to live in a dorm when I was 24-25 - just back from the States, just starting my career, so money was scarce.  I went to my old student dorm and asked the komendantsha if I could rent a room for a while.  Luckily the old lady was my good friend and we came to an agreement for a nominal amount of money.

Troitsk is a research town near Moscow, home to RAS Instutute of Nuclear Research and other strategic R&D.  The town is somewhat similar to Akademgorodok near Novosibirsk where I grew up - a small community of (ex)scientists, intellectuals and, yes, a few librarians.  :P

JC, the trophy passes now into Vaughn's hands (BTW, good job !).

I'm heart-broken. When my mother went into travail and she was brought to the local hospital for my delivery (on 2nd February, I'm Aquarius :)), there were no more beds available in their maternity ward and she was accomodated in the hospital library. This explains my soft spot for libraries (and for librarians looking like models, by extension ;) 8)).

Well, I've read most of Gerald Durrell's books, so I'm kinda prepared. C'mon Tonto, Vawncho Kimosabee, time to go a-huntin', saddle up !

Curiosity got better of me, so I sent a "Wink" to the Librarian's profile (http://www.site2date.com/profile.php?id=62678). Since I'm usually considered good scammers' prey by the unwary, let's see if it elicits any response :P.

My favourite Librarian made her appearance today on Anti Scam Org (http://www.anti-scam.org/scammer/2914-7.html) with some nice additional photos. BTW, today's report also includes a new double dealer, which I shall eventually add to my list (no rest for the vigilantes :().

P.S. for Lily: I think you may move this thread to the SCAMMERS section ;).

Librarian is a profession that has to do with managing the informational resources in a library, including arrangement, filing and supervising bigger book storages. A good librarian is able to tell you where to get the information you need in a most convenient way. Nothing in common with bookkeeping.

You are quite right about the dormitories and their similarity to your Italian instututions, except that Russian dormitories have never been managed by nuns.  :)

A dormitory is indeed a large dwelling block where a few people often share one room, and a bathroom. In Russian it is called общежитие (obshezhI'tie). It used to be a home with minimal comfort, typically used for students or people who came to work or study from other locations, and don't have any other place to live in their new location of work or study.

My guess would be that this woman may work as an university librarian, and lives in the dormitory that belongs to that university.

There is another option. She may live in a "malosemeyka." My wife had one: it was a room with a shared bathroom and it was also called an "obshezhitie" and it was in no way connected to a university or any institute. The quality and size of rooms differed considerably depending on the specific "obshezhitie": in my wife's case, she only shared the washroom with one set of neighbors, and as such it was seen as more prestigious than others. It was also located downtown, so it was convenient. In other obshezhitie, there will be many occupied rooms using one common bathroom. Why were these called malosemeyka? They were built in Soviet times for small families, recently married couples who were waiting for an apartment from the state when they had children. However, after the collapse, many people were stuck with only one room and many people are still living in these lodgings that have been poorly maintained. My wife has an aunt who lives with her grown daughter (28-years-old) and her son (16-year-old) in the one room.

Thanks Gabaub, although I seriously doubt that the girl in those photos may live in a dorm, much less in an old "malosemeyka" from Soviet times ;).

As for the "real" librarian, who knows ? As Downsouthgirl observed upthread, she could be preparing the stage for the "hardship" act :'(, consistently with the rather demure and unpretentious photo she posted where I first saw her profile.

LOL, yes, I doubt the ones in the photos live in Soviet malosemeykas :-) However, she may be real and may be living in a dorm. I knew one woman who worked in a cultural center and the only thing she could afford was a dorm room and as she came from a village she could not go live with her mother or father. I would say that many women in Russia do not have to act the "hardship" they simply live it on a daily basis....

I don't think I'm going to spend the $29.50 for the monthly subscription allowing me to read it, though ;).
