Recently on this and other boards there has been some discussion that women in 40+ age brackets may actually be more picky than younger women.
A recent study by Prince & Associates, a wealth management firm, provides some interesting info.
The firm surveyed 1,134 people nationwide with incomes ranging from $30,000 to $60,000. The participants were chosen in this range to get info about people who might be willing to marry to gain wealth.
The survey asked: "How willing are you to marry an average-looking person that you liked but didn't love, if they had money in terms of net assets or wealth?"
Two thirds of the women said they were 'very' or 'extremely' willing to marry for money. Women in their 30s were most likely of all (74%) to agree.
Also telling, was the price tag associated with the agreement.
For women in their 20s, $2.5 million would be required.
For women in their 30s, the price fell to $1.1.
For women in their 40s, the price rose to $2.2
The suggested explanation was that as women reached their 30s, they felt pressure to get married and have children, thus lowering their demands. But, by their 40s, women were more comfortable with being alone and independent, and thus willing to be more picky.
Interesting also, of the 20 somethings who said they would marry for wealth, 71% said they expected to get divorced. The researchers said: "They want to be paid what they think they're worth and then move on."
Another humorous note in the article said:
An ad was placed in Craigslist this past summer by a 20 something New Yorker who described herself as 'spectacularly beautiful.' She wanted a man who made at least $500,000 per year in income. She'd been dating men who made $250,000, but that wasn't 'getting me to Central Park West.'
The ad inspired a number of follow-ups including one by an investment banker. He said that his salary would grow over time but her beauty would fade over time. So from her strictly financial viewpoint, the transaction would not make good sense because her beauty was a depreciating asset.
