Real Men Don't Watch Chick Flicks?
« on: March 04, 2008, 07:04:45 PM »
Marina loves the movies. And I'm talking about opening day flicks on the big screen.

Recently, we watched "Definitely, Maybe."     Romantic    Sickening   :puke: Boring

Last week we saw "Fool's Gold."   A little more action, but still a boring film.

We are a close couple, so I take her chick flicks.  And she goes with me to action flicks.  Including the sequals to Die Hard and Rambo.

I'm wondering what other couples do.  Do you love your woman enough to sit through a chick flick with her?  LOL

And does she love you enough to sit through blood and gore?

I saw that definitly maybe show today but it was my 14 year old daughter I watched it with. I liked the movie bra'..lol

Hmmm..I like die hard too but when my daughter heard the message of the happy ending in the movies today and how a divorced father said there was a happy ending to divorce and that being the daughter he had it caused me to hold her hand as she had tears flowing down(my daughter) her cheeks. What else can a father be happy for than a loving daughter?

Sitting through a chick flick is a small price to pay to make your lady happy, unless it's a Jane Austen tale.

And it is neat to put more faces to names as people put up pics, Simoni. I managed to take my eyes off your lovely wife long enough to notice that you look pretty good for a man well into his 6th century!  (according to your profile ;D )

Ha!  It's better to overstate your age than understate it :-)  LOL

And yes, our girls do deserve our company at movies they like.   Such movies do have their rewards later on, too  :D

I know very little about the film tastes of RW, even those of the woman I have known for six years. :noidea:

We have seen films, yet Hollywood would go out of business if they depended upon us.  We are not attracted to the big budget releases - neither the male flicks especially with super special effects nor those chick flicks that appeal to teenagers (unless a good looking Latin man is the leading actor).

We tend to gravitate towards the arty films and independent films. I did not know that fact until I took her to our local art film theater (the kind where you can get good espresso coffee).  Built in 1926 as one of America's most elaborate "movie palaces" to mimic the courtyard of a hacienda and a Spanish plaza, it has been completely restored to include stars in the evening sky and marble urinals.

It is a spectacular setting with live organ music before the showing.  One problem – a little screen - yet it did not bother her as we watched Motorcycle Diaries.   She continues to ask me about it, looking forward to returning.

Hey I go one step further and sit through Russian chick flicks with her.  I get tears in my eyes, but not for the same reason as her.

Here's a novel idea, guys, take turns selecting the movie.

Maklin,
Very touching post.  My daughter is kind of a tough cookie, but when I recorded a Billy Joel song for her (after the divorce) she balled like a baby.  It was a lullaby from a Dad to his daughter telling her that he would always be there for her.

Well, we don't have this problem, very fortunately.  :D I love blood and gore and really don't care about chick flicks that much. My most favourite are - Braveheart, Gladiator, 300, Passion of the Christ....also love horror - The Ring, The Grudge and others. We combined our DVD collection and now it takes almost half of the whole wall.  :o

Tim says he never ever met any woman who would love these things.  :o  ;D So he is very happy about it. And me too. Even here we are so compatible.  ;) And the music too by the way - TRANCE forever!  :D

Did anybody see 'The Brave One' with Judy Foster?

Stop it, Anastassia, you're killing me!  ;D

Your the 3rd woman I know of who like those types of movies.  (the other two also like chick flicks, though, so they may be tricking me ;D  )

No way.   A woman would never do that.

From knowing him, his criteria on why Braveheart is a chick flick are:

-  Romance without nudity

-  Continued longing for a woman after she died

-  Disembowelment not depicted graphically and explicitly

-  Too much historical dialogue

-  The inner turmoil of Robert the Bruce

Yes, he's hopeless!  I took he and his brother to see Titantic when it first came out and they were still young.  My older son thought it was boring until the ship started to sink.  My younger son remarked about the many levels operating in the film, and he happily took his mother the next day to watch the film again.  Both from the same womb, same home.

Guess who has a more sympathetic heart and expresses more empathy for real life crises - the older one.  Go figure.

My husband was once hit on his head with a heavy volume of Jane Austen that fell from a top shelf.  It caused him a light concussion and a life-long hatred of all chick flicks.  We have never watched a chick flick together, ever.

I've experienced pain at the hands of Jane Austen, but that's the first story of a physical attack!

If there's a good story, I can take any genre (even chick flicks ;D ) but I gotta draw the line somewhere.

-  Disembowelment not depicted graphically and explicitly

-  Too much historical dialogue

-  The inner turmoil of Robert the Bruce

So, to turn this around, his idea of a guy flick is:

 - Nudity without romance
 - No longing for a woman, even when she is alive
 - graphic and specific disembowelment
 - No historical dialogue.  In fact, as little dialogue as possible
 - Turmoil on the outside only

It sounds like the standard Hollywood combination.

Just be warned.  If it has Julia Roberts in it, you are in for a long evening...

How about animated films (Shrek ((did I spell that right?)) ) or those that contain some animation (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids for example) ?
Tom Hanks in Castaway: You never know what the tide may bring in.
Viking: But you still need to walk along the beach to find it.

Lena and I love the Ice Age movies (especially the saber toothed squirrel)  We litterally had tears in our eyes from laughter when the squirrel almost made it to heaven!  We never got into Shrek, but did also enjoy Over the Hedge.

Those are not chick flicks.  They are cliff-hangers.

My chick loves chick flicks, but she loves JF too.  And Braveheart, of course :-)

Marina loves those.  I like them too.  Not chick flicks.   But not grown up adventure, either.

One of Marina's all time favorites is the "Shawshank Redemption," with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.

Marina was a member of the American Movie Club in Denper.  It was one of the ways she learned English.

Those are not chick flicks.

Of cause, not. In "Flight plan" the character she plays was supposed to be a man, they changed the script for her.

I never watched one episode of South Park. Just could not get into it. Dunno why.
