How Often Do You and the Wife Visit the Inlaws?
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:12:47 PM »
I recently got back from visiting the inlaws and we normally go 1 time
per year. My wife sometimes stays longer than I do. Although my wife
talks on the phone quite often to her family, does 1 time a year seem
like enough? This was our 4th trip back since my wife and I began to
live together. We went twice during an earlier year.

This recent trip was quite difficult for me and I don't know why. I think
part of the problem was not being able to understand all of the
conversation. Also, I know not to go there in the summer because I
can't sleep in warm air. And there's not much air movement in the
flat we stay in. And it was a bit warm while I was there. I didn't need
the coat I took. Her family knows me well now and they just want to
talk away with me.

I wish there was a part of this forum for learning Russian. We have
Russian TV at home and I have tons of learning materials, but I have
a difficult time getting motivated to study on a consistent basis. If there
was some learning on this forum, I think I would be motivated to learn.

But, how often do you and your wife visit the inlaws and do you go with
her?

Markus

My wife still has to go back home. She hopes to go in September, and that will be two years after arriving in Canada. I would like to go back with her, but don't know whether I will manage because of work.

Lil has gone back twice per year except this past year due to her Father coming over to visit us for a month. It's usually 2 weeks at New Year and 6 weeks in the summer. I haven't gone with her every time because I don't have the luxury of disappearing for extended periods when I'm in the middle of projects at work, but will continue to return to Russia over the coming years as time allows because I really enjoy the time I do get to spend with her family and friends.

My wife and baby are there now for 10 days. That makes her 4th time back in 5 years, but her mother has made 5 trips here and we've visited her mother and sister in Greece in November. Her mother and father will come back with her in a few days for possibly 3 months. We will return to Ukraine on Sept 11th until 26th. Thats the only times we could use our miles. It's hell living with your mother-in-law for that long at a time, but she is by far the best nanny. Everybody wins once she arrives.

Every two years inlaws visit us for an extended period.  My wife goes back every two years now on the 'off' years.

We'va averaged a trip a year with an extra one for my wife.
We recently returned and this trip some of my family went there with us for a couple of weeks. We took them on a tour from Kiev south to Stevstopol and some of the Krim Area.

With Europe it's easier for me.
For 2 years being here we travelled 2 times to Russia - 1st in half a year after my arrival and 2nd in another half a year. Usually the plan is to go every half a year, but the last time we couldn't do it. My brother and his wife visited us for the first time this April and i hope my parents can visit us also for the first time in August.
My friend both times went with me, usually for 1-2 weeks, then he would leave and i would stay for another 2 weeks. I was an interpreter between him and my family and i liked that - so no problems here (though i could get tired after especially "interesting" conversations between male members and him about footbal, computers etc. :cluebat:)But there were some tensions the last time between my mother and me that affected him. So he said that though he likes Russia, my city and my family at least for another year he's done with visiting. And frankly speaking going every time to the same city where he've seen everything is not wise considering sightseeing. If i go this year i will go alone - but i don't mind.
I still have a dream to go together for some time to a place outside our city, near Volga, where i used to spend every summer when i was young, have much memories about it. But when we visited it briefly my friend was eaten alive by mosquitos while noone except him got a bite. Now going there together is under big question, such a pity :'(

Marina has been with me in the USA for 27 months, and this Friday June 13th she will visit for the 6th time. It's been 8 months (Oct 2007) since her last visit to Omsk. As I assumed, the frequency of her trips home is decreasing as she becomes more comfortable in America.

She is very close with her family and I promised her mom 2 visits home a year. I'll fly her to LAX (from SEA) and see her off (and pick her up on Aug 18), but I'm not going this time. Two months apart will suck bigtime. I love her family and I speak half-decent Russian, but I hate hot, muggy Siberian summers, plus I am diabetic and in the summertime, the Siberian no-see-um mosquitoes drink my sweet blood like bums drink piva.

Also, my business is getting hammered by the housing slump and I need to make money, not spend it. SEA-LAX-SVO-OMS round trip tickets are over $2K right now.

I promised Mama that I'd visit at New Years when the mosquitoes are frozen.

Yeah, Wow! franklloyd would you adopt me please?  :D

This summer will be Elena and Sergei's 3rd trip back in 3 1/2 years, also to Omsk by the way. Alas, I won't be going this year as someone's got to pay for those outrageously priced tickets!

How about this one for a first............I am visiting the in-laws with our daughter without my wife, flying out this Saturday for a couple of weeks.  They just got a two year visa so they'll be visiting September / October time frame.   Right now wife just does not want to go back to Russia at all.  Hopefully, she will change her mind some day.

It really comes down to that she does not like the hassle of flying right now.  If she could just beam there and beam back she would do it.  Right now I just think she is tired of making such long trips.  We even went to Florida even though she just loves Hawaii because the trek from the East coast to Hawaii is such a bear of a trip.  She has even travelled from Russia first class (miles thank you) one time and decided she liked the cabin better because it is just not polite to have a young child in first class.........too many looks every time the kid makes a sound etc.  Perhaps its having the young daughter and flying, though we did not even have our daughter back when she flew first class.  I think things will turn around some day.  Right now MIL and FIL can come to visit here, she is studying in school anyway and I could take some time, take our daughter and visit the MIL and FIL for a few weeks.  They'll come in the fall, she calls them very often so I guess thats all she needs.  For me it is a lot of fun to visit Russia.  It will be my 22 trip to Russia alone.  It will give me a chance to try to remember some Russian and see how things are this year.  I just like to travel is what it comes down to..............so not so much about my wife as about me.  She will be fine for two weeks.

I think that is a first Bruce! Have a wonderful trip  :D

Lil flies out on Tuesday w/ Kolya 'til the beginning of August so it's just me and the cat for the summer (but before anyone starts feeling too sad for me being left behind this year, most of that time will be spent supervising a way cool art deco renovation at the Ritz-Carlton, right on South Beach).

Bruce,
Not to worry! I once flew back in first class (again miles T.Y.) from Taiwan with a chinese gentlemen that snored much much higher than engine noise! All the way from there to LAX! My seat partner and I laugh several times but..
I have to admit I could not sleep with his noise, so I read a book all the way home. And everyone else was fine with it! So...

After 3 years of marriage, it usually works out that my wife and daughter go back in the summer.  First year we were married we also went for Happy New Year. Last year my wife came back here for a month or two, then returned back to pick up daughter from Babushka. This summer it will be just me and the dog.  :-[
